00:11So, in the beginning, the costume design is great. How did you work on this aspect?
00:17Oh, I'm so glad you complimented the costumes. I'm really happy with it.
00:22Ernesto did a fantastic job with it, because I remember we were kind of struggling with what kind of character
00:28Claire was going to be.
00:31And I remember Kate going over to this cream-colored vest, and it had silver stars sewn on them.
00:37And she put it on, and she just got the character immediately.
00:40And I was like, you're right. She's a bedazzler.
00:42She probably would find clothes in local Goodwill stores or vintage stores.
00:49And then she'd probably go to a craft store and get a bunch of sequins and silver stars and sew
00:53them in herself.
00:54And so, as much as they didn't have a lot of money, I love that they just went bigger than
01:00life.
01:00And it's my favorite thing to watch in the movie when they're kind of strolling out in these new shimmering
01:07outfits.
01:08Music, blue jeans, love. The movie shows the most beautiful side of America. What do you think?
01:17Well, I mean, there's many things about America and what I would call Americana that I've always really loved.
01:27And I think that music is such a big part of that.
01:31I think that, you know, I look at just myself growing up, and I think of, you know, the music
01:38that came out of Memphis, Tennessee, where I live.
01:41You know, where you have, you know, some of the greatest black artists ever.
01:44You have some of the—and the white artists that were inspired from them.
01:47So you have Elvis Presley, but you also have B.B. King.
01:51And it was always that thing in America that kind of, like, made the playing field a little bit level.
01:56Because no matter where you came from or what you believed, if something got your heart pounding, if something got
02:03your foot tapping,
02:04everybody seemed to kind of click in together as a group, as a community.
02:09The 90s are important in the movie.
02:12It was a special time for movies and music.
02:16Maybe impossible to repeat for me.
02:18What do you think?
02:19I'm so glad you brought that up, because I always tell young people that this time in the 90s was
02:25really special.
02:27Because, you know, everybody always thinks about grunge, you know, when Nirvana came out and Soundgarden.
02:33But a lot of those artists also, and their audience, embraced people like Tony Bennett.
02:39You know, there was a real call to inclusion at that time, where it wasn't so segregated, necessarily,
02:48in terms of, like, well, you like this, you like that.
02:51In the 80s, I was listening to the early days of rap.
02:55Same with in the 90s.
02:57And I was also listening to NXS.
02:59And there was just an openness to loving all kinds of music.
03:04And I would say that movies were the same way.
03:06You know, the films in the 90s were just fantastic.
03:09And when we went into making this movie, I would always bring that up to the cast and the crew
03:14as we started listening to music.
03:17And a lot of listening to Pearl Jam on our set.
03:20Definitely some Soundgarden and so forth.
03:24Neil Diamond is a very cinematic character for me.
03:28What do you think?
03:28Oh, yeah.
03:29I mean, the great thing about, like, what Mike Sardina, I think, did was he saw that Neil Diamond was
03:35this pinnacle performer.
03:37It's not that he would just, like, get up there and perform these beautiful songs he'd written.
03:41He also wore the right flowy hair.
03:46You know, he had, like, the gorgeous golden shirts with the high collars.
03:51He loved to entertain audiences.
03:53And so I think that the great thing about what we were able to do is that we could do
03:58these really cinematic experiences,
04:00but they would be in, like, dingy bars and county fairs.
04:03And, you know, they just brought this showmanship to, you know, people all throughout Milwaukee.
