World Athletics caps road-race midsoles at 40 mm, and Nike's Vomero Premium (A$320) has a 55 mm midsole.

It's a shoe that openly admits it is not for race day, but rather for recovery miles and casual wear—cue instant sell-out and a fresh debate about where rules end and R&D begins.

World Athletics’ 2024 Sole Thickness Table sets a 40 mm ceiling for road events, meaning any shoe thicker than this is barred from competition. By adding 15 mm, Nike moves the Vomero Premium into a grey zone: legal

00:00Nike just made a shoe that's so extreme it's banned from competition and that's exactly why
00:05it's so good. This is the Nike Vermeiro Premium. It's a $320 sneaker with a 55mm stack height
00:13designed for recovery and training but it's illegal because it breaks the 40mm stack height
00:18limit said by World Athletics. It's too tall to race in but that's exactly why it's perfect for
00:22training and recovery. I've been wearing this shoe for a couple of weeks now and it is the
00:26most comfortable shoe that I've ever worn. It's packed with ZoomX foam and dual air zoom units
00:31and Nike wants it to replicate an anti-gravity treadmill. Trust me it feels unlike any other
00:37shoe. Even with all that stack height it's surprisingly stable when running although
00:41when walking you'll wobble a little bit especially going up and downstairs. Still once you feel that
00:47cushion every other shoe feels prehistoric. This shoe is all about breaking rules and it shows what
00:53companies like Nike are capable of when they step outside the regulations and just throw all the
00:58innovation they can at it. Of course the Nike lineup is full of outstanding regulated World Athletic
01:03shoes with less than a 40mm stack height but when you're not running in a professional race maybe you
01:08want more. And the consumers have noticed because even at this premium price point of $320 Australian
01:13dollars if you look online right now you can't get this shoe. It's sold out just about everywhere.
01:18So no you can't race in them but that's exactly the point.
