It's finally here - the Switch 2 is Nintendo's latest and greatest hybrid handheld gaming console, and delivers a number of big improvements to the already fantastic Switch experience. But is bigger always better?

Here, Man of Many's tech expert Dean Blake dives into the details of the newest console on the block, while also talking about what he likes, and doesn't like, about the Switch 2. We'll dive into details around mouse mode, how comfortable the console is to use in handheld mode, as wel

00:00This is the Switch 2.
00:01It's Nintendo's latest and greatest
00:03hybrid handheld console.
00:05I've been using it for about the past week
00:07and it's pretty much an improvement in most ways
00:09on the original Switch,
00:10but I don't think everything Nintendo did is a slam dunk.
00:19Now the big new feature is this giant new screen.
00:227.9 inches, 1080p resolution, 120 hertz.
00:26It's an LCD display rather than the OLED
00:28of the most recent Switch model.
00:31And it's awesome.
00:32It's really, really good.
00:33That 120 hertz refresh rate
00:36is a little bit hypothetical at the moment though.
00:38There aren't really any launch games
00:40that properly take advantage of it yet,
00:41which is a bit of a shame.
00:42I probably would have liked to have seen that in action,
00:45but we're not quite there yet.
00:47We're still waiting for Nintendo
00:48to put out something like Metroid Prime 4
00:50that actually takes advantage of that display.
00:52So it does have a much improved kickstand
00:55compared to the last version,
00:57or you can attach it to the brand new dock.
01:00This dock's actually got a bit of juice in it this time.
01:03You can connect the console to it
01:04up to a compatible TV
01:06and it'll up-res what you're looking at
01:08up to about 4K.
01:10Only 60 hertz though.
01:11It's not going to do the 120 hertz,
01:12which is a bit of a shame,
01:13but hopefully that's something Nintendo can solve
01:15with some software updates.
01:18It's worth noting that all of that benefit
01:20has a trade-off in the battery department.
01:22The OG Switch had a smaller battery,
01:25but it would typically last
01:26around four and a half hours
01:27when you're playing a AAA title,
01:29whereas the Switch 2 lasts a minimum of about two hours
01:32when playing something demanding.
01:34That's kind of the way these bigger,
01:35juicier handhelds are going at the moment,
01:37unfortunately,
01:38unless you want something more low-powered
01:40that's going to last you all day.
01:41So it is quite a bit smaller
01:43than a lot of the PC handhelds we've been playing with,
01:46stuff like the Steam Deck,
01:47the ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go,
01:50but it's also quite a bit thinner than those devices.
01:53Now that's all well and good,
01:55but it actually makes it pretty uncomfortable to hold.
01:57In all honesty,
01:58it's kind of like just holding a tablet
02:00with buttons on the side.
02:01I would use this thing for about 10 minutes
02:02and my hands would start fatiguing
02:04because there's no real support.
02:06So in general,
02:07I think the buttons are pretty good.
02:08They are a good size.
02:10They're not too big.
02:10They're not too small.
02:11I think that the analog sticks are still a bit small.
02:14They're bigger than they were on the original Switch,
02:17but compared to something like the Switch Pro Controller
02:20or even something like a Steam Deck,
02:22they're much smaller
02:23and they're much less comfortable to use.
02:28So new to the Switch 2 is the addition of mouse mode,
02:31where essentially you can take off one of the Joy-Cons.
02:34They have a little IR sensor in them
02:37and you basically just use it like you would a PC mouse.
02:40It's okay, generally,
02:44there isn't a lot you can actually use it for yet though.
02:47I did play a few rounds of Fortnite using it,
02:50like I would on a PC.
02:53I didn't do very well,
02:54but it worked.
02:55Like it worked okay.
02:57Unfortunately,
02:58there's not really many games
02:59you can actually use this thing on yet.
03:01I think it makes sense in places like menus or the eShop,
03:04which is way better.
03:06I'll talk about that in a little bit.
03:07But in terms of games,
03:09most games don't support it.
03:10No Man's Sky would be a great place for it.
03:12I played that on PC.
03:14Works really good with a mouse.
03:15But on here,
03:16you have to use the inbuilt controllers,
03:19which is a bit of a shame.
03:21Now, one of the other big problems
03:22that I had with mouse mode is that
03:23even when you have the device,
03:26you're still technically using it as a controller.
03:29So you still have to press all the buttons on the side,
03:32like a mouse.
03:33And that's just really uncomfortable.
03:35Like if I'm playing Fortnite,
03:36and I'm running around with this side,
03:38and I'm moving with this side,
03:39and then I also need to be jumping with this side,
03:42it doesn't really work.
03:44I think it would make a lot more sense
03:46if there was a better control scheme,
03:49but that's something that they'll have to figure out moving forward.
03:54So, speaking of games,
03:56I think we should talk a bit about the launch lineup.
03:58I think the launch lineup's a little bit lacking.
04:01Mario Kart's really fun.
04:04We've been playing it in the office.
04:05It's great, but it's not really a system seller for everyone.
04:09I think Cyberpunk 2077 running on this is really impressive,
04:14but I don't really want to buy that game again.
04:17That game came out five years ago.
04:19It's impressive, but it's not super exciting.
04:22The same situation applies to the Breath of the Wild
04:25and Tears of the Kingdom updates.
04:27They do play a lot better on this.
04:29I accidentally played the Tears of the Kingdom version
04:32that was not the updated one,
04:34and it ran kind of like crap.
04:36And then I realized and updated it,
04:39and it was immediately playing at 1080p, 60fps, locked.
04:43It looked fantastic. It played great.
04:46So, if you haven't played those games yet,
04:48I think this is the best way to play them.
04:51But if you're like me,
04:52and you've already sunk a hundred or more hours
04:54into both of those games,
04:55it's not really a selling point.
04:57It's more, this would have been cool.
05:01One thing that I do want to mention
05:03that I think that this does a lot better
05:05is the eShop.
05:07On the original Switch, the eShop was terrible.
05:10It's incredibly slow.
05:11On this, it is much, much smoother.
05:14It's much, much faster.
05:17Everything loads better.
05:18You can use the mouse mode in this,
05:20and actually, it's a really good experience.
05:21Honestly, credit where credit's due.
05:23It's a lot better.
05:24So, with all that said,
05:26what do we actually think about the Switch 2?
05:29I feel like it's pretty good.
05:30I think I've been a little bit harsh, maybe,
05:33but that's honestly just because the original Switch
05:35is one of my favorite consoles.
05:38And really, this thing is pretty much an improvement
05:40in every way, except for a few little stumbles
05:43that we talked about.
05:44It kind of frustrates me that it's uncomfortable to hold
05:47for long periods of time.
05:48We've got a 120Hz screen that we can't really use
05:51at the moment.
05:52It's a little bit of a shame that the launch lineup isn't stacked.
05:56I'm not too worried about the Switch 2, honestly.
05:59It's going to get there.
06:00I think it's just a matter of time.
06:03So, what did you think?
06:04Did you manage to get one on launch day,
06:05or are you waiting for a particular game
06:07before you jump in?
