00:00It's been over two decades since Alex Garland and Danny Boyle brought us 28
00:03Days Later, exploring what could happen if a virus spread through London, turning
00:06everyone it touched into the infected, a terrifying embodiment of pure vicious
00:11rage. The movie was an instant classic and spawned an excellent 2007 sequel 28
00:15weeks later, which left us hanging with an ominous ending that suggested things
00:19were about to get a whole lot worse. And then nothing. We waited and waited but no
00:23sequel arrived. Until now.
00:33Finally Boyle and Garland have joined forces once again to bring us 28
00:36years later. Actually the first installment in a new trilogy of movies, the film
00:40features a killer cast led by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell
00:44and Ralph Fiennes, with Garland responsible for writing duties and Boyle taking the
00:48reins as director. Together they bring us into a world set 28 years after the
00:53virus has decimated the UK. Society has been forced to rebuild from its very
00:57foundations and from there, according to the synopsis, a group of survivors of the
01:01rage virus lives on a small island. When one of the group leaves the island on a
01:04mission into the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have
01:08mutated not only the infected but other survivors.
01:13Just what are these secrets, wonders and horrors? The incredible trailers have given us
01:16some tantalizing hints, so here are the top three things we're excited to discover
01:20when 28 years later arrives on June 19. Number one, how have the infected evolved
01:24over time? It's clear that in the intervening years, something within the
01:28infected has changed. The eagle eye out there might have spotted a strange slug-like
01:32incarnation, the presence of what seems to be some sort of alpha infected, and then
01:36there's the chilling imagery of the fast-moving infected on top of the hill.
01:40Number two, how has the society changed in the intervening years? In this new world, life
01:44has become an extreme game of survival, where there's far more to it than simply
01:47avoiding the infected. There's a fragile social order to navigate with scarce
01:51resources and moral compromises that are difficult to fathom. This is a world
01:55inhabited by Aaron Taylor Johnson's Jamie, who's forced to leave a small island
01:58where he's raising a family and head for the mainland via a single, heavily
02:02defended causeway beyond the end of which there's no rescue. Number three, what's with
02:06that tower of skulls? It's probably fair to say that an enormous collection of
02:09skulls is rarely a sign that something good has gone down. And when they're
02:13arranged into an enormous tower, well that just pushes the ominous needle into deep
02:17red territory. As Ralph Fiennes' Dr. Kelson says,
02:20There were so many dead.
02:23Could it be some kind of memorial, or perhaps something far more sinister?
02:26This is a glorious day.
02:28Day of judgement.
02:32And that's it. 28 Years Later hits cinemas on June 19, and we will be there on opening night.
02:37After such a long wait, it's fair to say that this is the must-see film of the year.
