00:00Josh Hutchison, thanks so much for being with us here to talk about your new action blockbuster,
00:04The Beekeeper. Is it safe to say there's a fair amount of buzz about this one?
00:10Lots of buzz. Lots of buzz.
00:12The only thing you know is he's a beekeeper.
00:15A beekeeper? A beekeeper?
00:21Well, that's not good.
00:24An outrageously fun ride, especially your character.
00:27You know, trust fund, kind of cocaine-fueled tech bro.
00:30A little bit of a different role for you.
00:32What was it like to play this character?
00:34I mean, it's kind of just pulling from my real life, really.
00:37It's just sort of what I am.
00:41Derek's absolutely unhinged.
00:43And for me to get to step into somebody that's as wild and out of touch with reality as him
00:49was challenging in ways, but very freeing in many as well.
00:52And, you know, for David, our director, to kind of see the potential in me to play that kind of
00:57guy
00:57is something that I wouldn't have seen necessarily if I were him.
01:01But, you know, I'm really happy and I love getting to jump in and do something this wild.
01:06Working with David, obviously, he's such an incredible director.
01:09He's got such an amazing portfolio of films under his belt.
01:13What was it like to be kind of in that process where he pulls everything together on set?
01:17It's amazing. I mean, David was a fantastic director on every level.
01:22You know, his sense of blocking and technical abilities with the cameras
01:27and sort of how he sees it playing out physically.
01:29But then also just really doing the work with me to develop such a crazy character
01:33that, you know, if you just approach him to play him as this wild guy,
01:37it doesn't have the base of honesty and truth.
01:40And so we really spent time understanding what his insecurities are,
01:44what his upbringing is like, what his relationship with his family is like,
01:47and just really what makes him tick.
01:49And once we had that base, I felt very comfortable with David to, like,
01:53any direction he would give me, I would just go for it
01:55because I trusted the whole process.
01:57That kind of style of character, that kind of tech bro villain
02:00is becoming a bit more of a common trait in Hollywood.
02:05Is this kind of the rise of the tech bro supervillain in cinema?
02:08It seems like it. It seems like it.
02:10Well, I think, you know, we're at a point where obviously we're just seeing
02:13massive consequences and impacts of what technology can do
02:17and people who have infinite money and access and power,
02:20what that can look like.
02:21And so I think that, you know, it was destined to happen.
02:25And now is the era of the tech bro villain.
02:28It's fun. I like it.
02:30Now, let's talk a little bit about the cast.
02:32It's a huge cast and there's so many amazing people in here.
02:34Jason Statham, Jeremy Irons, Minnie Driver.
02:36There's so many great people.
02:37But I do want to talk a little bit about Jason Statham as an action star.
02:41Is he the best action star in the world going around at the moment?
02:45I mean, I could get in trouble with some other people that I've worked with
02:48if I say he's the best.
02:49Like The Rock might show up.
02:50Dwayne might show up and have something to say about it.
02:53But I think that one of the special things that Jason does as an action star
02:57is the stuff that he pulls off in movies as his characters
03:02are things that you wouldn't believe anyone else really getting away with
03:05in some kind of like nugget of realism.
03:08And I feel like in Beekeeper, you watch this guy come out of retirement
03:11and just rip heads and go crazy.
03:14And you kind of just believe that he can do it.
03:16It's not like a stretch in a way.
03:18And he's just a movie star.
03:20He's got the face, the voice, the presence.
03:23And he's just a badass through and through.
03:25In terms of the fight choreography, some of it is really intense.
03:29You got to be part of some of those really intricate scenes,
03:31particularly towards the end.
03:33What was it like kind of that blocking and that choreography
03:35for the fight scenes?
03:36I mean, truthfully, I didn't have to do much as Derek.
03:39Derek was very much a puppeteer behind the scenes.
03:42But I was around a lot of that being choreographed
03:45and watching it happen and shooting sequences where I was not there,
03:49but I was on set seeing it happen.
03:50And the level of professionalism and the mixing of fight styles
03:54and weapons and all kinds of things, it's a big feat.
03:57And Jeremy, our second unit director and choreographer for the fights,
04:00he's an absolute badass.
04:02And he actually, I worked with him on Hunger Games.
04:04He was one of the stunt guys who was one of your everyday stunt guys
04:08on set in the first Hunger Games with us.
04:10And now he's second unit directing and the fight choreographer
04:13for this, for the beekeeper.
04:15It's very cool.
04:16Excellent.
04:16Well, Josh, that's all I've got time for.
04:17But thank you so much for your time.
04:19I really appreciate chatting with you.
04:20And congrats on the movie.
04:21It is absolutely an amazingly fun ride.
04:24Awesome.
04:24Thank you so much.
04:26Thanks so much, man.
04:27Have a good one.
04:27You too.
04:28We have to kill him before he kills his way to the top.
04:36Honey?
04:39It's Flammable as fuck.
04:41Oh, no.
04:43You're going to get in my seat.
