00:00And as the recent announcement of new U.S. tariffs has shown, we're living in a time when uncertainty is
00:06the new norm.
00:07Decisions made beyond our borders have real impacts on Canadian workers, businesses, and families.
00:14The cost of living is rising in every Canadian home.
00:18Businesses are looking for certainty.
00:21Communities want to know that governments can work together to strengthen our economy, improve health care, and build a secure
00:29future.
00:30Well, I'm looking forward to sitting down with the rest of the premiers and the prime minister.
00:34He needs to lead the way.
00:35He needs to come up with a strong plan over the next 29 days.
00:39And I'm interested in sitting down with him and hearing the plan.
00:43I just, and I'll just speak for Ontario, everything's on the table.
00:48We can't keep rolling over for Donald Trump.
00:52So that's what I believe in, standing up strong.
00:55You negotiate through strength.
00:56You don't negotiate through weakness, especially with President Trump.
01:00I think Alberta has not been as exposed to some of the tariffs.
01:0497% of our goods cross the border tariff-free.
01:08And even with this latest round, it's about 1% of our overall product that is going to be impacted.
01:14And so our approach has been one to say that tariffs don't help anyone.
01:19Tariffs hurt Canadian consumers.
01:21They hurt American consumers, whether we apply them or they apply them.
01:24And although we're at 97% tariff-free, we'd like it to be 100%, and we'd like every other province
01:29to be at 100% tariff-free as well.
01:32So I think this is a window this month that we have, or 28 days, to sharpen the pencils and
01:40sharpen the focus.
01:40And I hope that we can get all of the outstanding issues on the table, whether it's autos or steel,
01:47softwood, aluminum, and some of the new issues that have been put on the table, so that we can get
01:51to a comprehensive agreement.
01:53We've done some preliminary analysis, and it looks like there's about $10 million worth of exports to the U.S.
02:01that would be exposed to these new tariffs.
02:03No indication that potatoes are involved in that.
02:07There would be a small segment of agricultural products.
02:13I think I can't be specific right now, but about $2.5 million in agricultural products that might be exposed.
02:22So thankful for PEI that potatoes don't seem to be implicated in these new tariffs.
02:28But look, I know that my fellow premiers here are probably far more exposed in other ways than we are.
02:38We've been very fortunate here in Prince of Rhode Island to this date to have had little exposure to some
02:43of these tariff measures, unlike some of my colleagues here.
02:49So we're thankful for that.
02:50We'll get more details to the agricultural community here in Prince of Rhode Island as we can, but initial analysis
02:57is that primarily potato industry is exempt.
