Perhaps, in your wildest dreams, you've contemplated rainbow hair. Odds are, you've shied away from it, fearing chemical damage, costly salon appointments, and an awkward growing-out process. (Not to mention, you know, what people at work might say.)

Going for bright color can be scary — we get it. That's why we were so struck by the hair at Maxime Simoens' spring 2015 show during Fashion Week. Laurent Philippon, the lead stylist at the show, used makeup pigments to paint the roots of the models' strands, creating a raver-girl effect. To us, it seems like the easiest way to try out the pastel trend without fully committing.

That's why we recruited celebrity hair guru Peter Butler to show us exactly how it's done. He grabbed one of our staffers and piled on tons of MAC Pigment, layering with hairspray, and setting with a dryer. The result: a peekaboo-purple shade that was a little bit '90s and a whole lotta cool. Watch the video to learn how to do it yourself.

00:08Hi, today we're going to show you how to do temporary hair color at home with makeup.
00:12So here we are getting ready with our MAC pigments.
00:16I'm going to add bright, bright pink, a little bit of this violet.
00:20What we're going to do is we're going to section the hair and I'm going to go a half an
00:24inch
00:24below her natural part.
00:26Clip that out of the way because what I want that to do is to lay over the hair color
00:32that
00:32we're going to add.
00:33I'm taking my next section and this is the section that I want to put the color on.
00:37I'm going to take hairspray and that's going to work as a base for our pigment to grab onto.
00:43Apply the pigment with a makeup brush from the roots to the ends.
00:47Take the hair dryer, dry that color into the hair and then I'm going to do another layer.
00:54So more hairspray and another layer of pigment.
00:58So now I'm going to go to the other side and do the next panel.
01:02I'm going to let that set and I'm just going to comb through this.
01:06Just want her to have her natural hair texture back.
01:09I'm really, really happy with the way the color turned out.
01:12If you like it and you want to try it at home, just keep layering the pigment.
01:16I love it, I think it looks incredible.
