00:06The thing that I've overcome the most is fear, pushing fear aside. You can do things that other
00:15people aren't capable of. Fear is always there, but I know how to handle it now. It's mental.
00:31I'm Hayley Langlund, and I love snowboarding. I started living my dream a long time ago.
00:48I grew up in Southern California, where snowboarding isn't a normal, everyday thing. My dad, when
00:55I was five, took me to Big Bear Mountain in California, and he taught me how to snowboard,
01:02and I haven't stopped doing it ever since.
01:13I started doing home schooling when I was in third grade. For what it's worth, I'd miss
01:19any high school dance, just to be able to go ride. When they're in school, I get to
01:24be snowboarding.
01:29She's, you know, only 15 years old. She's in all these big events with the older veterans,
01:35and I think she's been able to handle it really well. In the end, she gets the good results,
01:39because she's just out there having fun.
01:41This sport isn't really dominated by men. We have women doing tricks that the guys are
01:46doing. What separates me from other riders is that I try to ride with as much fun as
01:51possible.
01:52Today, we are doing our second day of practice, and it's going great.
02:00I did my first pro event when I was 14. I ended up winning that one, and just got third
02:07at X Games. This is my life, this is my love, and now we're here. The Burton U.S. Open
02:15is
02:16the most important snowboard competition out there. That's where everybody goes to try and
02:22really prove themselves.
02:26Now a gal that is fresh to the game, Haley Langland, the 15-year-old X Games bronze medalist
02:33this year.
02:34I think it's really important to have confidence. If you have confidence in whatever it is you
02:39love to do, people are going to notice that.
02:43Final jump, and she put it down, and once again.
02:47I went down on the last jump on a pretty standard trick that I know how to do, but I
02:52think that being knocked down, you just have to know to get back up and not let that stop
02:55you.
02:58What makes you happy? It's not written down on paper. It's not in steps that you have to
03:02follow. It's something that you find out on your own.
03:15It might require some tears, some blood, but the reward, it's sweet.
03:27Just go for it.
03:28on tape.
