00:00These braids are so perfect. I could just walk out right now. I mean not right now.
00:07My name is Ryan and welcome to Hair Me Out. My hair has always been a
00:12representation of who I am, reflecting different stages of my life. I'm excited
00:18for you to follow along as I get a 90s inspired hairstyle for the very first
00:22time by Stylist Nigella.
00:30So we're gonna start off with the blow-dry? Sounds good. I'm also like not
00:34tender-headed at all. You have a lot of length, yeah. This girl is really thick.
00:38Mm-hmm. We have volume. Yeah. We can go super straight. Yeah, I just started changing my
00:45hair up last year. I got a weave, I got a sew-in, and I was like, oh I like
00:50this.
00:51I like to be different characters.
01:00So we're gonna go into braiding. Your texture is really thick. If I can
01:03minimalize how much cornrows I have, but also pattern-wise, it will be great
01:08because it won't be bulky. I'm not gonna do them too small. I don't really believe in
01:12tiny cornrows. Depending on the hair type, it might be a little bit too much
01:16tension. You can experience breakage.
01:23Now I'm attaching the extensions. My confidence has really changed since I was young when it
01:31comes to my hair. Before middle school is when I started going to the salon and getting
01:37like actual styles done to my head that I wanted. I wanted to get my hair pressed out.
01:44I feel like a lot of black parents were very strict with hair. Yeah. I had to convince
01:49my parents on why I wanted to get a relaxer. Oh yeah. You know? It gave us an excuse to
01:54kind of express ourselves and also get away from our parents that didn't want to give you
01:58like a yes to certain hairstyles. Right. My hair has always been symbolic of like how
02:03I feel at the time. When I was a teenager, like I liked the twist and the butterfly clips. So
02:10that
02:10was me kind of being independent and being like this is the style that I want. And relaxers were
02:15so revered in middle and high school. But then in college something happened where it was just like
02:22frowned upon. Like oh you get creamy crack. It was woke. It was woke. I don't think anything's wrong
02:31with relaxers at all. Hey like to each their own. But it was like 20 years of me just straightening
02:37my
02:37hair and not knowing what it was underneath all of that. And now having an afro sometimes or
02:44the high top fade. Blowing it out like Grace Jones. The confidence has built. I felt like my true self
02:52when I did the big chop and started growing my hair out naturally. I know I wanted braids and then
02:59when
03:00I looked at your Instagram profile I was like oh this is her braids with a twist. What inspired
03:08this style? I just wanted to do something different. And who doesn't like the 90s ever? I feel like
03:14witch is in. Oh my gosh. Right. I think it will never be the same as it is today with
03:19the trend coming
03:20back. It sounded pretty crazy when I was describing it to the lady in the beauty splaster. I was like
03:25I want to
03:26do box braids with the leave out. And she's like with human hair? And I'm like yes. And she's like
03:31gives me that look like you're bringing that back. I can't know what I mean. I like the shock factor
03:38after someone gets a haircut like how much they realize that they needed it. Low key your hair
03:44appointment sometimes is like a little therapy session you know. I like to see when people come
03:49in one mood and leave out another on a good note. So it's really fun as a hairstylist. I'm there
03:55to
03:55like give great advice and also build their confidence and self-esteem. What I hate is when
04:02everybody just wants to touch your hair. Oh my god. I was working at a hotel where a lot of
04:06tourists
04:07was coming in and they were just like you're so cute. Hair is very fragile. It's a lot of tending
04:12to it. After you do all of that like you don't even want to touch your hair. I don't touch
04:17my hair.
04:18My boyfriend was like babe do you have to sleep with that scarf? I'm like yep. Yeah we do. Because
04:22if I
04:22don't my hair's gonna break from the cotton sheets. Right. Right. If I can't put cotton on my hair
04:29your hands don't need to be in it. Right. Yeah.
04:37So are we thinking about this? We can do that. We're gonna start seeing girls walking around with
04:44you know your hairdo. Yeah. They're gonna be like oh this is a B.O.B. Yes. I like calling
04:50it a B.O.B.
04:51I think we created a name today.
04:57Are you ready to see your new hair? Yes. Awesome.
05:01Ah I love it. It looks so good. It's so you. Love. I'm getting like
05:07Beyonce Bob vibes. I love it so much. It's amazing. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Thank you so much.
05:16You're welcome hun. Enjoy. I love it so much. I keep wanting to just. I know.
05:23I'm really into this braid out Bob. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined.
05:28It's really important for me to be able to express myself through my hair. I love that I never have
05:33to
05:33be stuck with a certain style and that my hair can change just as much as I do. Thanks for
05:40joining me
05:40on this episode of Hear Me Out. Don't forget to subscribe to Refinery29 and check out our previous videos.
05:46We'll see you next time 좋 ک게.
05:46Bye bye.
