00:13Hi, I'm Kat Steyer, and today I'm getting aqua blue hair.
00:17The celebrity that inspired me for this look was Hilary Duff.
00:21I saw that she had a multi-toned electric aqua blue.
00:25My hair journey started when I would go with my dad
00:28to get his hair cut.
00:30The guy who actually did his hair was very young.
00:33He kind of looked like a Backstreet Boy, and I had a crush on him.
00:37And from then on, he had been dyeing my hair blonde,
00:40and in my 20s, I started experimenting with color.
00:43I've gone from a range of mermaid hair colors
00:46to lavender and bright purple.
00:50My dad, he was definitely a supporter of my creative and wild side.
00:55January of 2020, my dad passed away from complications from cancer
01:02that he had when I was 15 years old.
01:04To lose somebody who was so supportive of my creative and wild side
01:08and, you know, was just a cheerleader was really tough.
01:11I definitely feel like the new me is calling my name.
01:14I feel like I've been waiting for, you know, all of these years of growth
01:21to finally mean something.
01:22And I definitely feel like I'm at that level now.

01:30I was hoping to get electric aqua blue hair.
01:33Okay, perfect.
01:33Hi, my name is Mindy, and I'm located in Los Angeles,
01:37and I specialize in color corrections and muted pastel colors.
01:40I've been doing hair for about four and a half to five years.
01:44I'm best known for taking dark-haired clients,
01:47specifically Asian clientele, to light platinum colors,
01:51so more muted colors like the metallics versus the vibrant colors.
01:56Is there anything I need to know about?
01:58Um, I do actually have a PPD allergy, so if we could avoid that.
02:03Perfect.
02:04So we actually use a line called Phenola Oral Therapy,
02:06which is ammonia-free, PPD-free.
02:09So I'm going to be using that today for your whole service.

02:16Today, I'm going to be transforming Kat's hair
02:19from a blonde highlighted look to an overall full bleach aqua color
02:24with some purples and blues.
02:26Personally, I think aqua blue is trending now,
02:29more so because before, people weren't as adventurous
02:33to try different things.
02:35For Kat's hair, she came with previous highlights,
02:38and our goal today is an overall full bleach or global look.
02:42I'll be applying the lightener off the scalp,
02:44so from her mids to her ends and leaving out pieces
02:47that are already platinum blonde.
02:50So Kat is allergic to PPD,
02:52so I'm using my favorite brand called Phenola,
02:54specifically their oral therapy line,
02:57as it's meant for sensitive scalps and has no ammonia or PPD.
03:01I know that we have to use a special bleach when I dye my hair for my PPD allergy.
03:06Otherwise, my head just swells up twice the size it normally is.
03:11My ears swell and my eyes swell.
03:13The tiniest bit of bleach on my head will make me blow up.
03:17PPD is a chemical that's found in most hair dyes.
03:20Because my main color line is PPD and ammonia-free,
03:24clients like Kat who have a PPD allergy can feel safe when booking with me.
03:29For my tools today, I used our in-house brand called Level 1 Studio
03:33and used our foam mesh strips that are reusable and machine washable
03:38versus using foils to not create as much waste.
03:42I then went in to apply on scalp with a weaker developer
03:45and applied one more time on the blonde pieces that weren't light enough.
03:56Hair means a lot to me and it means nothing to me.
04:02Hair means that I can be beautiful and I have something to be creative with,
04:07but that doesn't mean that having hair means that.
04:19I will wash her out using Fanola Fiber Fix Shampoo,
04:22which is a bond-building shampoo and is moisturizing and has a great pH balance.
04:47It's research that it I do also volont Backward from outside in thesteps and is helping
04:48So effective for asking the Adjustment Law
04:48I have to prove that I guess that it doesn't mean that it's not hard

06:45for me just because she was really open to anything that i did and fully trusted me cat was super
06:51positive and excited which made me even more excited to do her hair in order to keep her hair
06:56light cat should come every six to eight weeks to minimize the breakage and banding for her hair
07:01maintaining a blue isn't too hard however if it has a slight cast of green it might be a little
07:07bit tricky to maintain depending on what look she's going for to prevent the green from coming through
07:13she should be using a blue or a purple shampoo i recommend my clients to have a customized color
07:19mask that way it doesn't fade green it kind of feels like a big change to me to have my
07:24hair dyed
07:25like this again only because it's been so long since i've had it done as far as color goes being
07:31blonde
07:32it just doesn't really give me that oomph that i have and now that i have this beautiful hair i
07:38have
07:38that back today's transformation took about three hours which is relatively short because she already had
07:45blonde hair working with mindy overall is great mindy is such a sweetheart and she is amazingly fast
07:53i cannot believe how quick she works and especially with a beautiful product at the end like this
08:00it's she's a really really really talented person my favorite thing about being a colorist is seeing
08:06my clients reactions and hopefully making the impossible happen i think my dad would have been proud of my
08:13new look i think that he would be happy that it's not a super dark vibrant color but i do
08:18think that
08:19he would see the talent that mindy has accomplished here and he would think that it's beautiful
08:25i definitely feel proud of myself for you know taking the plunge and getting back into having colored hair
08:32i'm gonna try to keep this look for as long as possible i i want to keep this look as
08:37long as my hair
