00:00Hair is like the first thing that people see about you.
00:04People judge you based on your hair.
00:06So I'm a little bit apprehensive about things that are really difficult to maintain.
00:12Hair, I think, can make or break your confidence.
00:15And hair is really important to me in terms of how I look and present myself.
00:25Hi, I'm Anjali, and I'm getting hair contouring highlights today.
00:29I'm looking to get caramelly, lighter brown highlights.
00:34I want something that's gonna really brighten up my face
00:36and look better without as much effort.
00:40Right now, my hair feels really flat,
00:42and I feel like the color isn't really doing my face any favors.
00:46When I was a kid, I had very short hair and, like, little bangs.
00:50It was very cute, and then once I got into high school,
00:53my parents were pretty open to me dying it.
00:56So I've done a lot of crazy colors,
00:59but it's always looked kind of streaky and crazy.
01:02And then when I moved to L.A., I went for short hair,
01:05and I really, really like that look,
01:07but I'm not feeling the plain color as much.
01:11During the pandemic, my usual hairstylist was ghosting me,
01:15and I just impulse cut my hair with, like, kitchen scissors,
01:18which I should not have done because one side was much shorter than the other.
01:23It was terrible, and ever since then,
01:26it still has been a struggle with my hair growing it out
01:29and making it look normal after I massacred it.
01:33My mom is very much of the mindset that your hair is the most important thing
01:39right after your eyebrows,
01:41and I'm really excited for her to see my new transformation.
01:44I'm a little scared that it's going to be high maintenance.
01:48I'm excited for a change and for it to just look a lot cooler than it does now.
01:54My name is Emma, and I'm a hair colorist at Tab and Spark Salon in Los Angeles.
01:59I would say that I'm known for blondes and blonding,
02:03and my specialty is more lived-in color and more natural, sun-kissed looks.
02:09I work with some influencers and some celebrities like Jay Kissa, Jessica, and Violetta.
02:17Hi, I'm Emma. Nice to meet you.
02:19Hi, I'm Anjali.
02:20What are we doing today?
02:22Today I'm hoping to brighten up my hair and my face
02:25and do some fun highlights that will hopefully be low-maintenance.
02:30Something that I can sort of just wake up every day and not have to style a lot.
02:34So basically we'll add some subtle highlights, a little bit brighter on the face,
02:38and something that will incorporate a lot of your natural color.
02:41So it'll grow out and you don't have to feel like you have to be here every six weeks.
02:46That'd be amazing.
02:47Okay, perfect. Let's get started.
02:49I'm going to be giving Anjali a lived-in sun-kissed caramel highlight today
02:55with a natural root.
02:57I will begin highlighting Anjali's hair.
03:00I know what pieces I'm going to lighten because I factor in the way that the sun hits the hair,
03:06so I will try to mimic it in a natural way where it's not too light,
03:11but it is just enough like the sun just hit it.
03:16As I go through the highlights, I will backcomb some of the ends of her hair
03:21without highlighting everything so that it's a seamless blend.
03:29Then I will go through and I will take a diffuser to the ends of her hair so that it
03:36lifts
03:36with the rest of her hair because it's not going to get as much natural heat from her head,
03:43so that it lifts evenly.
03:47Then I will take each highlight out as it's ready so that it is a very clean, even canvas.
04:02Then I will go through and I will rinse out each part of the head that is ready.
04:07I will put a conditioning treatment over it while the other side is processing.
04:20Then I will towel dry her roots, apply the root gloss, and I will use one shade at her hairline
04:30and one shade at the rest of the head so that it mimics a very natural color.
04:36Then I will take all of the ends of her hair, lift up and rinse thoroughly,
04:42towel dry at the shampoo bowl,
04:46and apply the all-over gloss for about five to seven minutes.
04:55Once I've shampooed and conditioned her hair, I will take her to the chair
04:59where I will brush her out and apply some of my favorite products
05:02like a moisturizing oil and a anti-humidity oil.
05:12Then I will blow dry with a round brush to give it a nice shine
05:16and start forming the wave that I want to create.
05:30Then I will take a one-inch curling iron to her hair,
05:33and I will pull it out as it's ready to give it a very nice subtle wave.
05:44All right!
05:47Oh, my God!
05:49It looks amazing!
05:54I love it.
05:56Yay!
05:58When I looked in the mirror, I was so surprised.
06:00It was so beautiful and bright.
06:04It really changed up my face,
06:06and it was something that I, like,
06:08couldn't have even imagined as a color on myself.
06:11Oh, my God!
06:12It looks so good in selfie mode, too.
06:17Hello!
06:18Oh, my God!
06:19I can't believe it!
06:20Wow!
06:22Do you like it?
06:23No!
06:23It looks fabulous!
06:25Oh, my God!
06:27It's beautiful!
06:28It's just beautiful!
06:29Thank you!
06:32I want to be in your chair!
06:35You still have your natural coming through.
06:37You're not gonna have a crazy line that grows out,
06:39and then you just get, like, a haircut,
06:42and it'll still look good shorter and shorter and shorter.
06:45Yeah!
06:45It's, like, better than what I expected.
06:48I don't even think I could have imagined this.
06:49It looks so good.
06:50I think it looks very relaxed and low-maintenance,
06:55but still elevates my entire look.
06:57So even if I'm in, like, casual clothes
06:59or not wearing a ton of makeup,
07:01my hair will look amazing.
07:03How Anjali should upkeep this look
07:05is honestly every once in a while
07:07where maybe she feels like her hair is a little too warm,
07:10she can come in and get a gloss,
07:12and that will just restore the tone.
07:14She should also get a water filter
07:17because the water in Los Angeles is not great
07:20and can change the color of your hair.
07:23And she should probably come in every five to six months
07:27just to keep that soft blend looking great
07:30and maybe just some added dimension at the ends.
07:33I wish that I had found Emma sooner,
07:35and I wish I had made this change
07:37when I first came out to L.A.
07:39I absolutely love this look.
07:40I'm never changing.
07:41I wish I did this around the same time.
07:58We got this feeling of living.
07:58You
