00:00I've never been to a curly cut specialist or stylist before,
00:04and the more I think about it, when I was a kid,
00:06I would always get my hair cut by regular hairdressers,
00:09and they would always blow it out straight at the end.
00:12Hi, I'm Melina, and today I'm getting a curly cut.
00:15I've had curly hair my entire life,
00:17and I've tried everything,
00:18and I didn't really have those resources when I was little
00:22to go onto YouTube or social media
00:24and figure out how other people like me were styling my hair,
00:27and no one in my family has curly hair.
00:29For me, having followed Tamara Mowry for a long time,
00:32she has been really inspiring to embrace my own curls
00:35and the way that she's not only just been wearing it naturally,
00:38but doing the work to take care of it and keep it healthy
00:41after years of putting heat on it
00:42is something that makes me want to embrace my natural hair more.
00:45I'm willing to cut off a good amount of inches.
00:48I like the medium length.
00:49I don't want to go so short that it feels a little too jarring
00:52from what I'm used to, but I'm excited to cut off these dead ends
00:56and have a fresher, healthier look.
00:57My hair journey really started from my mom and I doing trial and error
01:01and finding different curl creams and mousses
01:03and figuring out what's crunchy, what's shiny,
01:06what textures do I like,
01:07but also not really meeting any stylists in my area
01:10that knew what to do with my hair.
01:13I'm so excited to finally be meeting Sabrina
01:15and getting my hair cut by somebody who cuts curly hair.
01:19Hi, I'm Sabrina. Nice to meet you.
01:21Nice to meet you.
01:22Hi, my name is Sabrina, and I am a curly hair specialist
01:25here at Allen M salon in West Hollywood, California.
01:28I've been a stylist for nine years now.
01:31I do all types of hair, but now 90% of my clients are curly hair clients.
01:36What makes a curly haircut unique is learning the right tools and products to use on your hair
01:43and making sure your cut is taken care of properly even after the haircut.
01:48My favorite part of specializing in curly hair is helping people achieve their best hair possible
01:54without having to change their natural texture and just working with what they have.
01:59Tell me a little bit about your hair.
02:01I've been letting it grow out for most of quarantine,
02:04so I feel like I need some body and volume back into my hair
02:08and maybe some layers and framing the face a little more.
02:11We should definitely give you a lot more layers.
02:14When you style your hair, are you ever tossing it, like, part-wise?
02:18I usually part it down the middle,
02:20and then just because they're curls throughout the day,
02:22sometimes I let them go.
02:24I think because you mostly do middle, we'll do it off-center.
02:26Perfect.
02:27And then just lots of layers.
02:28Awesome.
02:29All right, let's get started.
02:30Perfect.
02:31Let's go put you in a row.
02:32Okay.
02:33Since we want to keep as much of the length as possible,
02:36we are just going to cut in some rounded layers,
02:38and then after that, certain pieces, we're going to over-direct,
02:42just so it's able to go from short to long and have it all be connected.
02:46After that, I start to cut into the face frame,
02:49and I create a guide in the center,
02:52and that's basically where the shortest of the hair will be,
02:55and then I connect that with the length.
02:59I took Melina over to the shampoo pole to give her a shampoo and a deep conditioning treatment.
03:05I rinse her out with cold water just to help seal the cuticle
03:08and give her hair extra moisture and shine.
03:10Squeeze the extra water out of her hair.
03:13I don't towel dry, and then I go into styling right away on soaking wet hair.
03:18After the shampoo, I will give her an anti-frizz treatment.
03:21We brush the treatment through and then put a plastic cap over the hair,
03:25and then I take her over to the dryer and sit under the heat for 10 minutes.
03:30I apply a leave-in conditioner, curling cream, and a gel,
03:34and once all the product is applied, I brush it through with the Denman brush,
03:39scrunch in some extra gel, and then start diffusing her hair.
03:42I'm going to have her whip her head forward and start diffusing her hair upside down,
03:47just so she's able to have as much volume as possible.
03:51As your hair is drying, do not touch it, just to avoid frizz.
03:55Just constantly flipping it to one side and then the next,
03:59and doing that until your hair is mostly dry.
04:02I know the diffusing process is very timely,
04:05and to make the process a little bit more comfortable,
04:09I gave her this tip on just placing your body on your bed,
04:12and having your head kind of hang over,
04:16and then just diffusing while you're laying down in bed.
04:18You ready?
04:19Yes.
04:20Okay, here we go.
04:22Oh my god.
04:24It's so pretty, like, defined.
04:31I love my hair. I feel so much more confident.
04:33The first thing I noticed was the body and the volume,
04:36and it just felt more alive somehow,
04:39and less flat and drab than it was before,
04:41so I'm really happy with it.
04:43One of my main things was layers,
04:45and wanting to frame my face a little more,
04:46and being able to have little pieces of hair in the front
04:50for when I put it up so I don't look bald.
04:52And I talked to Sabrina about it,
04:55and she gave me these fun, like, longer bangs,
04:58which I'm still learning what to do with them,
05:00and how to live with them,
05:01but I'm really excited to first show my new hair
05:03to my little sister.
05:05We look really opposite,
05:06so she is super tall with straight hair,
05:09and she's always the one supporting me
05:12to look my best and be confident.
05:14When Melina came in, her hair was long.
05:17It was almost all one length.
05:19I had no shape,
05:20and it was just lacking a lot of movement and body.
05:23I loved seeing Melina's reaction in the mirror.
05:26I love it when people can look at their hair,
05:30and genuinely be happy,
05:32and just have healthier hair.
05:34My biggest tip to my clients is making sure
05:37to take care of your hair even after the cut.
05:40You want to try to do weekly treatments,
05:42and just know that it's a lot of work.
05:45It takes me 12 hours from wash to styling and drying my hair,
05:49but at the end, it's worth it
05:51when you really invest in your hair.
05:52Curly hair to me means being able to embrace your true self,
05:56learning to work with what you have
05:58instead of wanting something that's not who you are.
06:02I feel like my hair defines me more
06:04because it just feels more me and more curly and bouncy,
06:07and I try to live that lifestyle and personality,
06:11but lately it's felt really weighed down and flat,
06:14which affects your energy too,
06:16so this definitely makes me want to go out and have fun,
06:19and feel more confident about myself.
06:21For my first curly cut, this is the perfect length.
06:24It feels right in my comfort zone,
06:26and maybe next time I'll go a little bit shorter,
06:29but the bangs were a big first step.
06:32I definitely want to keep coming back to Sabrina,
06:35and a curly cut specialist,
06:36because she just knew how to work with my hair
06:39in a different way that I haven't experienced before.
