00:07Watch out!
00:08No!
00:09Greetings.
00:10Buzz, you're back!
00:11Hey!
00:12Where have you been?
00:14I'll show you.
00:19I don't get it.
00:21Huh?
00:21Oh, right.
00:25Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs.
00:27Episode 1, Blast Off.
00:31This is the mission log for my trip.
00:33Over 450 days in space.
00:36That's longer than any astronaut or cosmonaut
00:38has spent in space on a single mission.
00:40Ever.
00:41Wow.
00:42Yay!
00:43It's the space shuttle!
00:44Precisely, Rex.
00:45NASA's space shuttle is just one way
00:47to get to the International Space Station.
00:49Another way is a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
00:52I took the shuttle.
00:53It looks like a rocket.
00:55Good eye.
00:55It is part rocket.
00:57It's also part spaceship and part airplane.
00:59Right.
01:00The space shuttle's made up of three main parts.
01:02The part that goes in orbit is called, well, the orbiter.
01:06The big orange tank in the middle is the external tank.
01:09For liftoff, we need these white rockets called solid rocket boosters.
01:13Ten, nine, eight, go for main engine start.
01:16Seven, six, main engine ignition.
01:19Four, three, two, one.
01:21When liftoff.
01:25Houston now controlling.
01:30To infinity.
01:32And beyond!
01:33Look at it go!
01:34Uh, it's, uh, it's something else, eh?
01:38Two minutes after the shuttle takes off, the rocket separates.
01:41Oh!
01:44Six minutes later, the external tank detaches and burns up in the Earth's atmosphere, while
01:49the orbiter continues into space.
01:51But how do you get on the station?
01:53You get there through a process called a-
02:00Rendez-vous.
02:01Rendez-vous.
02:02Rendez-who?
02:02Rendez-vous.
02:03It's French for showing up at the right place at the right time.
02:07That's right, Ham.
02:08Through a series of complicated maneuvers.
02:11We get the shuttle into alignment, and attach it to the station.
02:16Then we open our docking port, which connects to their docking port.
02:19Nice!
02:20Rendez-vous!
02:22Wow, Buzz, you're actually in space!
02:25How fun!
02:26Ha ha!
02:27Well, yes.
02:28It was fun, but space cargo duty isn't all about fun and games, Rex.
02:31These guys work very hard.
02:34In fact, the International Space Station was built module by module, with pieces brought
02:38up on shuttle flights and Russian rockets.
02:41Look!
02:41It's like a puzzle!
02:43Oh, look again!
02:43Those pieces are the size of a school bus!
02:46Each module is designed for a different purpose.
02:48Some modules are for basic living.
02:50Some are for experiments.
02:52When I arrived, there was only three crew members aboard.
02:54Newly installed modules can accommodate a six-person crew, plus visitors.
02:59That's one crowded toy box.
03:00Some of my fellow crew members like to say life in space has the feel of a camp-out.
03:05Oh, I love camp-outs!
03:07Except the sleeping bags are strapped to the walls, and you can't make delicious hot schmoes.
03:11Ah, that's s'mores, Buzz.
03:13Oh, right.
03:14If you want to know more, you can visit this NASA website.
03:17Buzz Lightyear, a real space ranger.
03:33It's an entire library!
03:36Oh, I'm not hours.
03:38Tenshin!
03:39It's a busy place!
03:40It's a busy place!
