00:00the big 10 which the timing of this bill is always so unique because you want to kind of be
00:05the last
00:05to go maybe get the last word in but also you want to make sure that you have your own
00:11platform
00:11we've got nfl training camps that are coming up so i feel like that might be starting today it's
00:16kind of conflicting a little bit with this and maybe gobbling up some of the headlines
00:20but i guess coming out of because we talked to you a little earlier last week coming out of
00:25the sec media days what were the big themes you were seeing as you're taking this into that final
00:33week before camp starts yeah you know i mean sec was full of quotable coaches they were loose you
00:40know whether it was pete golding or josh heupel or lane kiffin um there was a lot of quote worthy
00:46material more than usual coming out of the sec and then like you said the big 10 gets the last
00:52word
00:53and i thought tony petiti yesterday used that platform yeah to promote i would use the word
01:00promote the sec rivalry with the rivalry with the sec and they can do that because obviously the big
01:0610's on top right now it's easy to promote that rivalry when you're standing on a podium next to
01:11three national championship trophies and that i think that was 100 by design but i thought bobby he
01:16used the uh the that podium that pulpit to uh continue to promote the 2014 playoff i mean that
01:25that really seems to be the message that tony petiti is hammering in there as much as he can that
01:30they're not even considering anything else they're really dead set with the messaging to try to promote
01:37this 2014 playoff is there a reason you think that that's what he used to stand for you saw the
01:44sec
01:44that was just a lot more i guess a lot more fluff a lot more kind of gossip going on
01:49over there
01:50is this his chance to say like hey we are on board with this we need the sec to kind
01:56of work in
01:56like work in lockstep with us well i think he threaded the needle between the on-field part which
02:01is what you know the fans care about quite frankly i care about more is you know those matchups
02:06between the sec and the big 10 the you know from years of the bcs era um the sec dominating
02:14college
02:14football and this back and forth of how do you measure the strength of a conference and i i still
02:18hanging on at the end of the day it's about who's holding up that trophy you know we can do
02:23bull
02:23records and you know i found it interesting steel the last three years the sec and big 10 have played
02:3025 head-to-head games it's either make sure i'm right on this 25 and it's 13 to 12 sec
02:37okay so like it's a one game difference between the two conferences you could do the non-conference
02:42metrics the bull records but at the end of the day it's about michigan ohio state indiana holding
02:47up those trophies that's how the sec built the national championship reputation um and the records
02:53honestly if you go all the way through the bcs era there's not a lot of separation it's you know
02:59the
02:59sec's got a slight advantage head-to-head but it's not it's not like a wide gulf in the record
03:04between
03:04the two conferences were you surprised that tony petiti leaned into that a little bit this time
03:09bill because typically he's never really addressed he's got up there and kind of talked about hey the
03:15group of the conference and all this but he kind of leaned in on hey you know we'd love to
03:21play him
03:21more we'd love it's yeah fancy it is kind of a rivalry and you leaned into some of that maybe
03:26more so
03:27than he's ever done in the past right well yeah and a small correction it's 12 11 sec not 13
03:35to 12 so
03:36i mean either way right we're separated by one game but i think you can when you're on top and
03:41i think
03:42the fact that like he said i one of the things he defended about the big 10 that i thought
03:48was really
03:48interesting is that he said our teams are ready more prepared for the college football playoff when
03:54they get in it because of the travel because they play a cross-country schedule i didn't even think
03:59about that you know indiana's path last year they flew out to pasadena they flew to atlanta they flew
04:05to miami um you know and that was their path that's a lot of miles in the airplane but they
04:11were prepared
04:12through the schedule they played granted indiana's big 10 schedule was a little softer last year
04:16but the point stands i think when you go through i tony petiti's probably tired of hearing
04:22that the middle and the lower end of the big 10 are terrible when you know i think with michigan
04:28and penn state and even wisconsin who generated some buzz yesterday the potential sleeper team
04:35with luke fickle on that notre dame game i think that the meat of the big 10 the middle of
04:40it might
04:40be a little better talk about that buzz with wisconsin because they've had a chance to maybe move on
04:45from luke fickle instead of paying you know a 30 million dollar buyout it's like hey let's let's double
04:50down and invest and see if he can do do something when he's actually fully funded and has resources
04:56i mean do we feel like that buzz is worthy of that yeah you know they were playing catch-up
05:02i think it's
05:03already tough to recruit at wisconsin in some ways you know barry alvarez found a way all the way back
05:10to
05:10him where they found a way they found their identity through huge offensive linemen leaning on them and
05:15running the football and luke you know we know he can coach and build a winner he did that at
05:21cincinnati look at the talent development he had at cincinnati and how many draft picks they had
05:26on those teams that uh one went to the college football playoff and played alabama tough but had
05:31a thorough run of success it's taken a little bit longer at wisconsin i was so happy they retained him
05:38because i think it does start at quarterback they bring in a transfer quarterback from old dominion
05:42their offense needs to be better and they did in fairness and i'm not making excuses wisconsin go
05:49look at their schedule last year and tell me anybody would have had success against that between
05:54playing oregon michigan ohio state indiana iowa and it was all in succession so alabama
06:01the last like five years i felt bad for fic
