00:00again. Ted, down to you. Alonso's pitted as well for the soft tyre. Keep an eye out on Valtteri Bottas.
00:06I might be wrong, but I think they've got a mismatch of compounds on that tyre. Just have a look.
00:10I think there's one yellow and the rest are white. Just have a look. We shall try. Danny Fiat there.
00:15Tyres, of course. Williams had pitted beforehand. That's a very easy pass to make. And do you know what?
00:20Ted is right. That is a mix of compounds. He has got on his right rear tyre the medium compound
00:26Valtteri Bottas.
00:27On the other three, he's got the soft compound. Oh, dear. That's a schoolboy error. He will have to pit
00:32straight away.
00:34That's illegal. He's breaking the rules. You've got to have a must-be of one homogenous compound front and rear.
00:41You can't mix and match like we very much used to do in the olden days.
00:46I'm surprised it's not been spotted before now. Well, Max Verstappen gets chopped off there, doesn't he, by Felipe Nasser.
00:53Going through the corner with no name and onwards now. Downs towards Poole. And he's lost out a bit.
00:59Surely they would have noticed. And they should have got Bottas in at the end of the first lap, the
01:04end of the out lap.
01:05They could have sort another set out with the... You know, he's gone into the race with a limited number
01:11of tyres.
01:12Of course, they're going to qualify him with six sets in total. Three of each compound. Ted...
01:16I think the mix-up must have come in because he was very quick in after that little tango at
01:20the last corner, wasn't he, Martin?
01:23Yeah.
01:24Kimi Räikkönen saying that he's down. Don't think of lifting. There we go. It was a bit of a hurried
01:29stop, as Ted pointed out.
01:32And on go three yellows and a white.
01:36Wow.
01:36There we go.
01:37There is the white tyre.
01:39Good spot there by Ted Kravitz, who is in charge of the tyres. He's going to face a few questions,
01:46I'm afraid, for that one. That's absolutely fine there. They're OK at the moment.
01:51He's holding those two up, isn't he, now? And it's quite interesting to see that, at the moment, in behind
01:55Räikkönen anyway,
01:57Pérez and Ricciardo on the two different types of tyre, as Bottas has got, on the same chassis. But they're
02:04doing similar lap times.
02:05Pérez, out in front, there's Hamilton.
02:09Sir Williams still haven't pitted Bottas. They're now under official investigation.
02:15Box, box, box, box.
02:16And the race leader's coming in for his pit stop.
02:19And he was 11.3 seconds ahead before Rosberg took his stop.
02:24So what's he likely to get there, Valtteri Bottas? A five-second penalty added to his next pit stop?
02:31Or is it serious enough to warrant a stop-go or a drive-thru, I wonder?
02:35It's a very serious breach of the rules, I would say, mixing tyres like that.
02:39It's amazing it doesn't happen more often, particularly when it sort of rains,
02:43unexpectedly or such, where you get half-intermediate, half-wet on or something.
02:46But it's very, I can't, can you remember this happening in a race where they get a mix-up of
02:51compounds?
02:52No, not one that I've been commentating on, certainly.
02:55Certainly not one affecting one of the front runners.
02:58Ted, you've probably got about 10 years on me. You must have seen it before.
03:02I'm not sure I have. I mean, these are professional teams.
03:05Williams are investigating all of their sets now to check that they're all correct.
03:11Well, there's got to be another set.
03:12And that they're all correctly labelled.
03:13Yeah, there's got to be another set wrong, isn't there?
03:14Yeah, so here's Hamilton out of the pit stop. Nice one. Two points.
03:18So, Crofty, sorry, Williams are going to look into how it happened after the race
03:22and are now trying to decide on what they do, how to minimise whatever pain they're about to take.
03:27I mean, all they've actually got to do is go in and change one tyre if they want to do
03:30it.
03:30They want to put it right as such, but they'll try and minimise the rest of their pain.
03:35I guess they're probably waiting to see what their penalty is.
03:38If it is a five-second penalty, they can come in, change the tyre over,
03:44and use it up that way and get sort the tyres out at the same time.
03:48But that doesn't seem harsh enough to me for what is a fundamental error.
03:52Not that I want to beat up on the Williams team, but that's a fundamental error.
03:57I'm not suggesting they're going to get an advantage, but they could.
04:00And you don't know if that is...
04:01I mean, what's his lap tyres? 156.3 for Bottas.
04:04Those are random. Grosjean and Fiat are 156.1.
04:08But he was under a lot more pressure when he just had four yellow stripes fitted to his car
04:13than three yellow stripes and a white.
04:15I wouldn't say he's gaining anything, probably, that's for sure.
04:18So, Hamilton's pitted better than him.
04:20And confirmation that it will be a drive-through penalty for Valtteri Bottas.
04:25So, they won't be able to do any work on him and have to come through the pits and then
04:29come back in again
04:30and to change that set of tyres.
04:32Now, Fettel, interestingly, is Valtteri Bottas.
04:35Makes his way round the source, does Bottas, who's got the drive-through penalty, and he's behind Fettel anyway.
04:40But my view would be, if he does his drive-through, he then doesn't have to stop and change the
04:45tyres.
04:45He's served a penalty for having the wrong tyre on the car.
04:47He can then get back into a normal pit-stop routine as long as he's not got a massive imbalance
04:54across the rear axle.
04:55I can't imagine he has, frankly.
04:58I just wonder if it'll help him.
05:00The right rear, does it need a little bit more stability, durability, maybe?
05:05Can he go a bit longer on that stint?
05:08Not long enough, surely, to gain any advantage.
05:10Not now he's got that drive-through penalty.
05:12I mean, we could have as many, in the past, you'd have as many as three different compounds on the
05:16car.
05:17If you were stressing your front left out at Silverstone or something and burning your rear tyres up,
05:24you could have four if you wanted, but they changed those rules to cut the cost on tyres
05:28and then keep, when we have one tyre supply, just keep it a bit under control cost-wise.
05:33So, Hamilton...
05:34We have a drive-through penalty issue with tyres.
05:38Drive through the pits now.
05:40Just drive straight through the pits and back out.
05:43So, it's about a 16-second cost, then.
05:45And it's going to cost him a number of places.
05:48It really is.
05:50He might be lucky here and come out ahead of Carlos Sainz, who's been lapped,
05:56and ahead of Marcus Ericsson, who's currently running in 12th place.
06:01And that would be the result.
06:04And this was the cause.
06:06And you can see how much of a late stop it was.
06:09They're all marked up, as you can see, right front, left front.
06:12It's the set.
06:13And look, that's the right, the right rear is in that chap's hands.
06:15Yeah.
06:16And they already had a right rear waiting.
06:21Yeah, he looked down and he's like,
06:23Oh, I thought I'd got that tyre.
06:25Oh, I had.
06:26You need this one, boys.
06:32Oh, dear.
06:33Showing you the pressures that the guys in the garage, the girls in the garage,
06:36are working under during a Formula One Grand Prix.
06:41So we'll continue like this.
06:43Your right rear is a prime tyre.
06:45All others are option.
06:46Mix up in pit stop.
06:47Crack on with the race.
06:48We can still get some good points.
06:50But it is worth pointing out that Hamilton gets the benefit of tyres that are fresher at the end of
06:54the stint.
06:55So he's got a lap on them, hasn't he?
06:57They're going a bit mild.
06:59So has Bottas used both compounds in this race now?
07:02At the same time.
07:03Just at the same time.
07:05Which tyres are they going to put on next?
07:08Intermediates, Ted, if the rain comes.
07:09How are the clouds looking?
