00:00It's like a MIDI controller that people use to like turn the pages on their sheet music,

00:05but I'm using it to trigger the looper in Ableton.

00:08It's super janky looking because we like used an X-Acto knife to cut through the pick guard.

00:39Hey, what's up? This is FlawedMangos. I'm out here on the Killswitch Memories tour, my first ever tour.

00:45We're playing in Chicago tonight, and I'm going to show you guys some of the gear I've been using on

00:49the road out here.

00:50Yeah, so this is my number one main guitar. It's a Mexican Fender Telecaster that's kind of

00:58undergone a lot of modification over the years.

01:02The most obvious thing is this Killswitch that I put in with one of my good friends back in high

01:08school.

01:08It was so long ago, and it's super janky looking because we like used an X-Acto knife to cut

01:13through the pick guard.

01:14It took like hours and just soldered it in their basement.

01:19And I had to switch out the switch itself. It was originally from like a Jazzmaster that we just took

01:23apart,

01:23but now it's like just a stock switch that I had to put back in.

01:28And yeah, I just used that along my playing to kill the signal.

01:31The neck I also changed out like two years ago. It was just some random stock neck.

01:36I think it might have been used, but it's got like locking tuners, which is nice.

01:39I just did that instead of re-freading it because it was cheaper and easier.

01:44Yeah, so not a super fancy guitar or anything, but it's got a lot of special qualities to it.

01:50Yeah, when I'm playing, these pickups are stock. They're just standard Fender Telecaster pickups.

01:56I like to use the bridge pickup live when I'm doing the kill switch stuff because it just

02:00gives me a little more sustain and it keeps it ringing so I can kill them rhythmically and stuff.

02:06I like to play with the tone and volume a lot. I like to do a lot of like violin

02:10-ing,

02:10that's what I've heard it called, where you just kind of swell the notes in with the volume knob.

02:14I like to do that a lot. And sometimes I'll use the tone knob a bit just by feel,

02:18if I feel like it's a little too sharp sounding. I'll go to neck for more kind of rhythm chord

02:24stuff

02:24that I'm doing, but a lot of the time for the kill switch stuff, it's just on the the bridge

02:28pickup

02:28standard Telecaster. I've got a backup Telecaster that I got made pretty recently in time for this

02:35tour. I got this Telecaster sent over to me from Fender. It's chambered, which is really nice,

02:40so it's super light. And then I took it to one of my good friends at Sweet & Sound Guitar

02:47in the greater Boston area in Massachusetts, you should check them out. And he put in this kill

02:53switch for me because I did kind of a shitty job, it's kind of a bad job on that last

02:59one. So I wanted

02:59something a little cleaner so you can see the cutout is nice and clean there and it works perfectly well.

03:07So yeah, I'll usually bust this one out if I break a string or something on stage. That's kind of

03:11why

03:11I go to this one. I use Ernie Ball strings a lot. I've been trying the new Paradigm strings on

03:16tour,

03:17which are pretty cool. Seems like they break less, which I like. I just use like 46 to 10 gauge,

03:23pretty standard. And yeah, mostly I'm in standard tuning pretty much the whole set. I'll use a capo

03:29sometimes, then I think I go to drop D for like two songs, but I really just like standard tuning.

03:34I'm kind of too lazy to switch tunings like that. So this is my pedal board that I've been using

03:38on

03:38tour. Nothing too fancy, but I can kind of just go through the signal chain. So first in is this

03:45Boss Tuner. This is my first reverb pedal of two on this pedal board. And this one I like to

03:51keep

03:51fully wet. So it's all reverb signal. It's a pretty long sustain. It's a Walrus Audio fundamental

03:57reverb. And I like to have this one early in the chain so I can have it before this, which

04:03is a

04:03compressor. This is the Dynacomp. This thing stays on pretty much the entire show. Pretty dimed on

04:09output and sensitivity. It's just like a crazy aggressive compressor that just gives me the

04:15sustain and the feel that I like. It just lets me ring on forever. And putting the reverb before

04:22that compressor makes this reverb tail just kind of crazy long as well, which I really like. It kind of

04:27makes the guitar playing feel very like enveloped in reverb, which I really like when it's all the

04:32way wet. Out of the compressor, I have a Boss PH3 Phaser, which I usually keep on the four stage

04:39setting, just super deep. I used to listen to a lot of old Tame Impala, and he used a lot

04:45of slow

04:46resonant phaser sounds to get psychedelic stuff, and that always kind of stuck with me. So that's been on my

04:51board for a while. A lot of these pedals I've had since like high school, honestly. Out of the phaser,

04:57I go into this T-Rex Crunchy Frog. I've also had this since high school. It's kind of like a

05:02tube

05:02screamer clone. But it also has, it's got a blend knob, which is nice, so you can go a little

05:08dry

05:08signal in there, which kind of helps cords stay clean. And then it's also got a clean boost after the

05:15drive, so I can kick this on just to get a little bit of volume if I want to do

05:18a solo or a lead part or

05:19something. So that's pretty nice. I've got the Earthquaker Devices Bit Commander, which is like

05:26a crazy synth fuzz. It's got like octave options, and I kind of just use that for a little extra

05:33craziness during lead parts. Having the reverb before these two distortions also is really important

05:40for a lot of the sounds I do. It just makes it like crazy wall of noise style playing. It's

05:46pretty fun.

05:47Out of that Bit Commander is the second reverb pedal. This one is kind of, it's just a Fender

05:51reverb. I think it's like on a spring setting, but that's kind of an always on just for a little

05:56bit

05:56of like light ambience. It's not really doing anything crazy. Out of that is, the last pedal is

06:02a Boss DD7. It's a digital delay. And I use this for two functions. I think I start the set,

06:09I have it on

06:09this reverse delay setting, where it just fully reverses everything that I'm playing, and I just use it to get

06:13some weird effects during a couple of songs. And then later on, I turn it into just like a little

06:20looper, basically, where I'll be making like little like one to two second loop snippets, and I'll just

06:24use it like a tape looper and just overdub a bunch of kind of ambient sounds to create like big

06:29textured

06:29walls of noise, basically. And that's the end of the signal chain. The last thing I have here

06:36is this little random thing I got off of Amazon, the Air Turn. I think it's like a MIDI controller

06:44that people use to like turn the pages on their sheet music usually, like if they're playing

06:50classical music. But I'm using it to trigger the looper in Ableton, which I'm using to kind of build

06:57loops throughout the show. So this is kind of just wirelessly sending MIDI messages over to Ableton to

07:03trigger the looper to create like synced loops, basically. Yeah, so coming out of the pedalboard,

07:09I then just go directly into an Apollo interface over there into Ableton. And Ableton is kind of

07:15the backbone of the set. So we've got like a click track and a few backing tracks. And I'm running

07:20the

07:20looper in Ableton, obviously. And I'm also using like, you know, an amp sim in Ableton. It's just kind

07:25of the standard one. And that's, yeah, I do a lot of DI guitar for my recording. And so I

07:30figured when I

07:31brought it on the road, it was, you know, it made sense to do DI guitar as well. And it

07:36sounds okay,

07:37you know, so that's kind of what I run with. It's a lot easier to travel with than a tube

07:41amp too.

07:42So for picks, I like to use right now, I think I picked up these guys, these Alice picks.

07:49They're okay. They kind of like, I think I used this one last show and it like fully disintegrated. So

07:54honestly, not very good picks. I normally like Dunlop, the green Tortex ones, but I just happened to buy

08:00these somewhere and I have like a ton of them now. So I'm just using them at shows. So yeah,

08:05that's what I'm using right now. I'm using Sennheiser wireless transmitters into Shure

08:12in-ear monitors, the little translucent wired earbud things. Yeah, you can find me on any social
