00:53Isaiah 40, verse 30 and 31
00:56Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall,
01:02but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
01:06They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary,
01:11they will walk and not be faint.
01:16Good morning listeners, it's Barbara Jaffer and we are on Mother's Corner,
01:20our topic for this morning is Grieving You, Finding Me.
01:25And our anchor verse to support this is Psalm 34, 18.
01:29The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
01:35That's Psalm 34, verse 18.
01:38Our guest today is Liesel Schultz.
01:41She's a devoted mother of four and a grandmother of a seven-year-old little girl.
01:46Liesel Schultz is also the founder of the Dreams Foundation and this foundation empowers women
01:53to move beyond grief and embrace the future filled with a renewed purpose and community.
01:58Liesel Schultz is also the author of Grieving You, Finding Me, which is our topic today
02:03and she'll tell us more about that in a minute.
02:05And Liesel is particularly passionate as an advocate for widows to find hope,
02:11healing and purpose in the lost through her own story.
02:14Liesel, welcome to Mother's Corner.
02:17It's a privilege to have you with us this morning.
02:20Good morning, Barbara.
02:22Good morning, listeners.
02:23Thank you so much for having me.
02:24I'm super excited to be part of your program this morning.
02:28Great.
02:29And I know your willingness to share both your heartbreak and your faith is a gift.
02:33I know our listeners will be encouraged by the way God has transformed your pain.
02:36So thank you for making time, Liesel.
02:39Thank you so much.
02:41Liesel, losing your husband changed your life in an instant as you shared some of your story with me.
02:48Can you take us back to those first days, weeks, you know, after your loss and how you processed your
02:56grief
02:56and what helped you to take your first step forward as a young widow and suddenly a single mother?
03:04Yeah.
03:05Wow.
03:06There's a term we love to use and it's called widow's fog.
03:11We use it a lot these days when we say brain fog, but sure, those first moments were just
03:18shattering.
03:19I mean, losing your husband who you were together for 25 years and his illness was very quick.
03:28The symptoms started early that year in 2017 and he was diagnosed and subsequently passed
03:35on in the same year.
03:36So it was just such a shock, you know, as people of faith, we pray and we believe God is
03:43going
03:43to heal and we did all of that and sadly he passed away.
03:48So the first few moments were just very shattering, very painful and also very scary because immediately
03:57you stop thinking about how your future is going to look without your husband, without
04:02your children's father, you know, and our granddaughter was born just months before that.
04:08And so, yeah, widow's fog was very real.
04:11I was going on in autopilot, just, just, just in shock.
04:17Yeah.
04:17And sadness that, that I would sum up as the early, early days.
04:22Sure.
04:22If you look back at that now, Lizelle, you probably can't imagine if someone had to ask
04:28you a couple of months before that, if this were to happen, how you would cope, you would
04:32probably say that, that you wouldn't, but it would be fine.
04:36I didn't, I didn't think I had it in me.
04:39You know, I was already wondering about my pension days.
04:43Where am I going to be?
04:45How is this going to work out?
04:46Are we going to be living on the streets?
04:48Yeah, no, I, I could never, ever have even thought I'd be doing this today.
04:53Um, yeah, no, it was so hard.
04:56Um, but yes, thank God.
04:59Amen.
05:00Matthew 5, 4 says, blessed are those who mourn for they will be comforted.
05:04And your testimony certainly, certainly speaks to that.
05:08And, and let's just go a little bit deeper on, on, you know, as the mother of four and
05:12now also a grandmother.
05:14And as you say, your granddaughter was born just a few months before your husband passed.
05:17How did motherhood influence your resilience during one of those most difficult seasons
05:23of your life?
05:25Yeah, you know, I think that's what actually also helped with that resilience because now
05:31I was alone.
05:32I was the single mom, you know, and I had to now make things work in the family.
05:38We, we had our own business, which wasn't doing great at the time.
05:41Javi was trying to sort of revive the business, but it just wasn't working out.
05:46And I then decided to find work.
05:50Um, and so, yes, I literally told myself, it's all on you, girl.
05:56You have to take care of the children now, although they were, they were sort of young
06:00adults.
06:00My youngest was in grade 11 at the time.
06:03Um, and then you have these, these grief myths, so to speak.
06:07And people told my son, um, our first child was a son and they said to him, um, oh, Aiden,
06:14you know, you're the man of the house now, eh?
06:16And I was like, can you not do that?
06:19You know, you know, and, and I immediately went into protection mode and I said to him,
06:26you are not the man of the house.
06:29Yes, you are.
06:30You are all this, you are here, but you're not going to take that on you, you know?
06:34And I know I immediately went into protector mode, but my children were, were half of me
06:42getting through all of this, knowing that it was, it was all on me.
06:46Now I had to take care of them and I had to pull myself towards myself and actually look
06:53after them.
06:53So yes, motherhood took on a whole new meaning.
06:57Um, now a single mom, it's all on you, you know, and people will, when I go to people
07:03with like, can you help me with this?
07:05And my daughter wants to do that.
07:06And she's now, and then they would ask me, well, what would Derek do?
07:09What do you think Derek would say?
07:11And I would be like, well, no, it's us now.
07:16I need to come up with it.
07:19So, you know what, it was absolutely trusting God every step of the way to guide me, to show
07:26me what to do.
07:28And so yes, um, single period into it was not easy.
07:33Um, especially when you had your husband with you for all that time.
07:38So my, I immediately said, I take my hats off to single moms.
07:42How did they do this all the time?
07:45You know?
07:45So my children really also, um, brought on that resilience that I had no choice, but to
07:54get better, to heal well and look after the best I could in the years that I still had
08:00them with me.
08:01Well done.
08:02And here you are.
08:03Here you are with me this morning to tell the story.
08:07Praise God for that.
08:08And you know, we know that, that, that the word says that those who put their hope in
08:13the Lord will renew their strength.
08:16They will soar on wings like eagles.
08:18They will run and not grow weary.
08:20They will walk and not faint.
08:21And the reason why I quote that right now, because as you shared about what they, you know,
08:25what people were saying to your son and then suddenly you as the mom, who's now the new
08:30protector and new provider, you know, it's not the, you become like the lioness.
08:35It's like, don't say that because you want to protect them.
08:37And the reason why I'm so passionate about that was because I was in the same boat with,
08:41with when my, when my husband passed and, and people don't, they don't, they don't mean
08:46this in a bad way.
08:47They will say, you're now the head of the house, look off to your mom.
08:51That's, that's not the right message.
08:52They're still babies themselves.
08:54And you know, yeah.
08:55And you know, Barbara, the worst was also at that time.
08:58He was my, our son was transitioning into his own adulthood and he was, he wasn't even
09:05working at the time.
09:06He was job hunting.
09:07He was all of 22, you know.
09:09And I thought that is so not fair to put that on him, you know, so, wow.
09:14I mean, I understand what they are trying to say, but it just, no, it was, he was so,
09:21he was dealing with his grief of losing his dad.
09:23And yeah, but I knew.
09:25Yes.
09:26And, um, I mean, I mean, look where you are today.
09:28It's, and I think it's important for young men and moms with young, single moms with young
09:33men, young boys that they are raising to remind them that you do not have to carry this.
09:38It becomes a, you know, the way God has created man, that they want to be the protector provider.
09:43It's something that's within their DNA.
09:45No, absolutely.
09:46But they need to be reminded that it's okay to mourn and allow them and let them be young
09:51boys finding their own identity.
09:54Yeah.
09:54I mean, he actually said to my mom, I will look after you, you know, and I thought it's
10:00so sweet, but yeah, I hear you.
10:02So, and so, and so then surviving that and, and day by day, as you and I chatted a bit
10:08last night, day by day, just finding the strength to move on, not only did you find the strength
10:13to survive in your new world and find your, your new identity as, as, as the one who makes
10:18the decisions, by the way, I want to touch on that, but your journey being a window, a
10:23widow and a single mother to finding, um, the establishing dreams foundation.
10:28That's, that's deeply inspiring.
10:31Lizelle, can you, can you tell us a little bit more about that, please?
10:35Yeah.
10:36Yeah.
10:36So, um, it, it actually, the, the book was the catalyst to that.
10:41However, we had a registered NPO, um, that was registered in the year that Derek actually
10:48passed on.
10:49So the NPO never really took off and it went dormant.
10:53And in my desire to reach out to other widows, the book happened and my publisher sort of guided
11:02me through, you know, like the supposed marketing and how to get the book out there.
11:07And she said, what would be nice is if you do, um, like they call it coffee with an author
11:12and you share your story and whatever.
11:15And I thought to myself, oh my gosh, this is ideal, you know, so I can actually revive
11:21the NPO.
11:22And cause I, I'd always at that stage, it was five years and I'd gone through the most,
11:28the worst, you know, and I was, I was really confident in where I was at in Christ and my
11:34healing.
11:34I was like, okay, but hold on.
11:37I can actually formalize this.
11:38And so when I did the coffee with the authors, I would specifically invite widows and, and,
11:46you know, it just organically happened that way as the Holy spirit led me, as I started
11:51reading up a lot about widowhood and the support that most widows need.
11:56I mean, there are, there are women who are quite well supported, both emotionally, financially,
12:03but, but, you know, for the most part, the widows just really struggle emotionally.
12:08And that was my first part of thinking about it was to offer that emotional support, you
12:14know, um, and the practical, um, support is, is building, which I'm super excited for, but
12:21to answer your question, the book in essence was the catalyst in me actually, you know,
12:28realizing that I can reach out to other widows, possibly widowers in this manner and offer
12:35that emotional support to them.
12:37Yeah.
12:38You know, um, God, I do believe this with all my heart that, that God will take what the
12:43enemy meant for harm or where there's loss and God, God will turn that around for our
12:48good.
12:49That's in Genesis 50-20 and practically, practically, we can testify to that.
12:54You know, where there's loss, you've been able to take your pain and transform that into
13:00a reaching hand to the women that, that suffered the same loss and that need that encouragement.
13:05So, so praise God, praise God for that and for you.
13:11Please stay tuned, listeners.
13:13Let go.
13:14You never let go.
13:15What a beautiful song that the Lord never lets us go.
13:19And, um, if you've just tuned in, we are on Mother's Corner.
13:23I'm Barbara Jaffer and we're speaking to our guest this morning is, um, Lizelle Skolz.
13:29She's an amazing woman who has taken pain and loss and turned it into a powerful testimony,
13:34um, with the loss of her husband and suddenly a single mom of four and a grandmother of,
13:40of a young seven-year-old and taking that pain and turning it into a blessing.
13:46So, um, Lizelle not only has founded Dreams Foundation, which she has been sharing with
13:52us, but she also is the author of Grieving You, Finding Me, which is our topic this morning.
13:57Um, your book, Lizelle, Grieving You, Finding Me, beautifully captures your personal journey.
14:03What did God teach you about healing and identity through the process of grieving?
14:09Yeah, wow.
14:11Um, I think your identity takes a massive knock, um, when you lose somebody so close to you
14:18or any traumatic event for that matter.
14:21Um, that's one of the big things that you start questioning.
14:25Who am I?
14:25Why am I still here?
14:27What purpose do I have?
14:28Um, but for me in my process, you know, I remember just Holy Spirit ministering to me
14:34one day, you know, before I was Mrs. Scalts.
14:37And I say that with all the love in my heart for my husband still, but before I was Mrs.
14:43Scalts, God had formed me and knitted me together in my mother's womb with a purpose, with a plan
14:50and for my life.
14:51And so now that I've lost that title, so to speak, I'm still that Lizelle that he formed.
15:00I'm still that Lizelle that he gave purpose and meaning to.
15:03And so for me, that was very big because, you know, even, even in my relationship with Dick,
15:10we had a really amazing relationship, but he was, if I have to put it this way, the stronger
15:15one, the out there one.
15:17Um, you know, I was more compliant.
15:20I was okay.
15:21I just did what I needed to do.
15:23Um, and, and I was okay with that, you know, but I didn't realize that in all of that, I,
15:29I wasn't actually being true to the gifts God had given me to, um, you know, even ministry
15:36for that matter.
15:37And so, yes, um, healing brought about a lot of that awareness.
15:43And like I said, um, being his wife was a season.
15:48I remember speaking to a lady one day and, um, she was counseling.
15:54And of course I was bawling my eyes out and this was early days, um, and speaking to her
16:00and she said to me, she, she just looked at me and she said, Lizelle,
16:05you know, your season of being Derek's wife is over.
16:10Wow.
16:10It is now Lizelle's season.
16:13Wow.
16:14And you know, at the time I didn't know if I wanted to slap her or, you know, like just,
16:22you know, right.
16:25And, and it's just been a few months and I was like, are you crazy?
16:29I love being his wife and I didn't ask to be, you know, and, but you know, I promise
16:35you, it, it hit me in the gut and I had to realize that we, we, we bold and brave
16:42when
16:42our season is beautiful.
16:43When we go, when I was Mrs. Scalts and, you know, all of that, wow, it's another season.
16:50It literally is now a little old season.
16:53And so I, yeah, I had to learn to embrace that and I had to dig deep and find those
16:59gifts
16:59and the meaning and, and what God actually wanted me to do and find like my title.
17:05The second part of my title is finding me, you know, I was always in shadow, you know,
17:12he was, he was a leader of note wherever he was.
17:16He was always a leader, always out there.
17:19And I just rode the wave with him, you know, and when he wasn't there anymore, the spotlight
17:24was full on me and I had to now step up.
17:29Yeah.
17:30And so it was quite a journey, but it was just amazing.
17:35It's been amazing to actually live in that identity that God has, has breathed into our
17:42life and created me.
17:44Yeah.
17:45And it takes perseverance.
17:46I just love the title of your book because it's twofold.
17:51I mean, we double click on that.
17:53It's the grieving part that is real and it's ouch and it's lows and it's highs and it's
17:58valleys.
17:59But then in that, still finding yourself and that's how God prunes us, you know, he takes
18:04the gain to my earlier point.
18:06Yeah.
18:06And it's a, and you would probably agree with me, of perseverance.
18:11You persevered because James, James one, verse four says, let perseverance finish its work
18:18so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
18:23And so oftentimes in the whole grieving, you're always faced with that.
18:28You're always faced with the happiness and the sadness.
18:31You're always faced with, you know, you want to celebrate it.
18:34It's somebody's birthday.
18:35It's somebody's wedding.
18:36And you don't want to be sad, but you're constantly in between these emotions.
18:42And it was personally for me, it was deciding what to choose on any given day, you know, was
18:50like, I can be happy, but I can also be sad, you know, but you know what, for today, my
18:55friend's wedding, she invited me, I'm going to go out there, I'm going to celebrate with
19:01her as hard as it is, you know.
19:03So, and so, yeah, and it's also just those, those intentional moments of, like, I'm not
19:11going to be sad today.
19:12You know, I actually am going to choose to smile and, and be intentional about actually
19:19enjoying this moment.
19:21And it's, it's not easy initially, it is hard and you see couples shopping, you see them
19:29walking on the beach.
19:30And it's so, your heart just breaks into a million pieces, but you're at the beach, enjoy
19:37the beach, you know.
19:38And show up for yourself, show up every day for yourself.
19:41Yes, show up for yourself.
19:43It is such a season of being intentional about your healing.
19:49Nobody else is going to do it for you.
19:50So, you have to be deliberate and decide what is going to be best for you.
19:56So, yeah.
19:57And it's about also finding your purpose, your true purpose through that journey.
20:02Because, because what you, what you're sharing is that you lost your husband and suddenly your
20:06identity shifts.
20:07You're no longer the wife of, you know, you're now needing to move on to what is, what is my
20:13new identity?
20:13What does this transformation look like?
20:16And, and so many widows and single mothers, Lizal, they listening to us and they struggle,
20:22they still probably struggle or may be struggling with loneliness and uncertainty.
20:26What would you say to those women listening today who feel that they, that they lost not
20:32only their husbands and partners, but also their purpose?
20:36What would you say to them?
20:38You know, Barbara, I'm going to share what one lady shared just last two weeks ago in
20:43our Coffee Connect, in the dreams, Coffee Connect.
20:46And like you say, it's a shifting, it's a transformation.
20:50And also more so, an awakening to yourself, to who you are.
20:55And the lady, and this is what one of the ladies said, that she sees this as God giving
20:59her a second chance.
21:01Yes.
21:02I was like, I love that, Verona.
21:05I love that for you.
21:07You know, and she said, yes, we feel the pain.
21:10Yes, we feel the, and I mean, the loneliness is the worst.
21:13Granted, again, you were so used to having this person with you for so many years, you
21:19know, that is very real.
21:21And you, you need to find ways to ease that pain.
21:25But you know, at the end of the day, like you said, there is purpose.
21:30God created you with that purpose, with that desire.
21:34And I do hear widows say, why am I here?
21:37I don't even know what my purpose is.
21:39But it's all part of the process.
21:41It's all part of that.
21:42Like, that is just being, it's just undercover for now.
21:46You know, the finding me part, it's not like it's not there.
21:50It is there.
21:51You have to go find it.
21:52Yes, and you know, it's about, and it's about, and it's about, again, finding your true identity.
22:00He knit you together in your mother's womb before you were the wife of God.
22:03Yes, and coming full circle back to that because, you know, God will turn things around for your good.
22:11And we need to start believing that.
22:14Yeah, incidentally, full circle was the name of our business.
22:18Oh, wow.
22:19You know, look at that.
22:21Yes.
22:22That's incredible.
22:23Praise God.
22:23That's incredible.
22:25You know, God, he's just got a sense of humor.
22:28He's got a sense of humor.
22:29And so, yes, absolutely.
22:31I only had God but to trust him.
22:34I stood on his word.
22:36I just literally, literally had to trust him with everything and believe that that purpose will come to light and
22:44will come to the fore.
22:45And I must say, God has been so faithful to me.
22:48I am an absolute testimony of just falling to pieces initially, wondering why I'm still alive, but then yielding and
22:57surrendering all of that emotions and worries and concerns to God.
23:03And he absolutely has been faithful to turn it around.
23:08I mean, I mean, he's a father to the fatherless and a defender of the widow.
23:14I love that.
23:17I just love it.
23:18I would say that to God all the time.
23:21I would like, here's your word.
23:23Thank you for your word.
23:25Amen.
23:25Stand by the word.
23:26Amen.
23:27And even in the quiet seasons, we mustn't doubt.
23:30So, listeners, if you're listening to Lizelle's testimony this morning, please, there will be times when it's lonely.
23:38Loneliness is real.
23:40It's not a magic wand.
23:41We're not saying there's a magic wand that we wave and then everything's great.
23:45In fact, quite the contrary.
23:46It will get really dark.
23:47But remember that when the clouds shift, the sun shines through.
23:52And our father sees the light.
23:54So, please stay tuned.
23:57Yeah.
23:58Yeah.
23:59Andrea Crouch.
24:01What's up studio now?
24:02Save the number on your phone.
24:04081-729-1657.
24:09That's 081-729-1657.
24:17That was Andrea Crouch.
24:19Jesus is the answer.
24:21And don't we know it's so aligned to what we're discussing.
24:24I'm Barbara Chafter on Mother's Corner and we're speaking to Lizelle Schultz.
24:29We have the privilege of her testimony this morning.
24:32And Lizelle has just been sharing with us some of what she has gone through, an incredible story of resilience,
24:40strength and hope as she had to find her identity after the loss of her husband and her identity in
24:47Christ.
24:47And then once she understood her identity, did she then start to understand her purpose in a completely different way?
24:54Not only the purpose of moving away from the purpose of being the wife to her husband when he was
25:00around, but now being the daughter of the king, which she always was.
25:04And then what God did with that amazing testimony to turn things around.
25:09Lizelle, so for if you could leave, there's women that are listening to the show and they hear us speak
25:16practically about, you know, resilience, strength and and going through the highs and lows.
25:22And we sit here today and we can speak about that very positively.
25:26But the reality is that they're going to be dark days.
25:29And if you could if you could leave women, widows, particularly single moms that are listening with one message of
25:37hope today, what would you want her to remember about God's faithfulness and the dreams he still has for her?
25:46Wow.
25:47Wow.
25:48Yeah, I just want to say that I am an absolute testimony of what God of how he transformed and
25:56turned things around for me, literally redeeming my pain, my tears.
26:01I, you know, and after five years, myself and my children, I had to move back to my family home
26:08because it was just that hard financially.
26:11I couldn't afford to pay the rent where we were staying and I moved back into my bedroom where I
26:18grew up with my mom sitting next door and my children, two girls sharing their rooms.
26:25You know, they've all been used to having their own space, but I had to be humble.
26:30And we moved back into my mom's place for about five years.
26:35And, you know, in that time, you know, I realized we take things so for granted.
26:40My mom was a widow.
26:41I'm like, my mom was a widow and she was older and she had way less resources than I had
26:49at the time, you know, because by then I actually got a full time job and I was getting back,
26:55literally starting from scratch, getting back on my feet.
26:58Where, I mean, in the early days, I was just, I could not see, what is it, the trees for
27:05the wood, the wood for the trees, yeah.
27:07Wood for the trees.
27:09I literally couldn't.
27:11I, yeah.
27:12And so I just want to encourage every widow, single mom who is feeling, who is finding themselves in that
27:20dark place right now.
27:21You know, you unfortunately have to feel and go through it, you know, you have to climb that pillow if
27:29you have to so that the kids don't hear or in the shower, don't suppress it, don't say it's not
27:37there, you okay, I'm going to do this because actually you can't do it on your own, you know, but
27:42you have to feel it, go through it.
27:44But then know beyond a shadow of a doubt if you are going to surrender that pain, surrender that hopelessness,
27:51surrender all of that to God and allow his plans to be fulfilled in your life.
27:58Easily we want to take this out.
28:00I mean, I made loans just to buy food and make sure there's enough for my children and, you know,
28:08like just overcompensated on so many levels, you know.
28:11And when I started literally just trusting God, you know, we say it's so silly, we say it's so, it's
28:20almost cliched, but you will have no choice but to, and you really do it with the knowledge of your
28:28relationship with him and the awareness that God is right there going through this valley with you.
28:33I promise you, I promise you, I, like again, I am a testimony of that God will come through.
28:42He's actually right there.
28:43He said he's going through with you and your gifts, your, your, the, the fruit that he has placed inside
28:51of you must come to the fore when you yield it to you and you allow the gardener to do
28:56the work.
28:57I love it, I love it, I love it, I love, allow the gardener to do the work.
29:01We sometimes come with our own little spade and we uproot the soil, we're fertile and we put my seed
29:06in it.
29:06We want to do our own thing.
29:08Yeah, yeah, I love it.
29:10We want to do our own thing and over and over again he says, allow me, if you're abiding me
29:16and my word abiding you, oh my gosh, God is just absolutely faithful.
29:21I can, I stand as a testimony to that.
29:24I mean, I mean, we could speak for hours, but we have now come to the end of our show.
29:28Absolutely, it seems like it.
29:29The time goes way too quickly, but you talked about so many things that I want to wrap up with
29:34to say.
29:35The word surrender is a word that I want us to hold on to.
29:39If you take anything away, surrender to your father and allow him to be the gardener.
29:45And even if you can't see the green leaf popping through, know that the seed is deeply planted and it
29:51will take root and it will emerge and allow the gardener to do what he does.
29:57Because, you know, it's what grows in the dark when no one can see behind the scenes when you're trying
30:02to feed your family and you're trying to pay the rent and you're trying to keep the lights on.
30:07God is there and you will, like Lizelle, find a time and space when it comes full circle where you've
30:15been sharing your testimony.
30:18Lizelle, thank you for joining us on the show today and for sharing your story with such vulnerability and authenticity.
30:24And no doubt there's been words of encouragement for the ladies that are listening and you've given us hope, all
30:30of us hope.
30:31Thank you, Lizelle.
30:33Awesome.
30:33Thank you for the opportunity once again.
30:36I'm just grateful for that, to share the message of hope.
30:40No, you're most welcome.
30:42So, listeners, we've come to the end of our show.
30:45Please remember to tune in next week to Our Mother's Corner where we create a safe space for us to
30:50share testimony, to share the word of God.
30:53And so, please, until next week, stay rooted and rising and be blessed.
30:58I also want to mention that we have a praise and worship evening, the Cape Pulpit Praise and Worship, on
31:04Friday, the 3rd of July at 6 o'clock at the Red Harbor Church in Cape Town.
31:08The entry is only 60 Rand.
31:10Please try to support us and to come expected of what the Lord will do and join us in fellowship.
31:19Have a blessed day, further, everyone.
