00:04hello and welcome to the latest episode of a right roll podcast with me emily andrea and me emmy
00:12welcome back thank you thank you for having me what a week to come off matley you couldn't be
00:18happier you picked your moments well i think it's fair to say that none of us were expecting
00:23to be recording a podcast today um and we are all dialing in from very different places
00:29um andrea and i are on holiday um it's kind of gone by the wayside hasn't it because we've had
00:34this extraordinary development in the royal world harry and megan are about to return to the uk
00:40permanently emily i want to know how the news got to you what was your reaction emily
00:47can we see your facial expression when you read it look it's really interesting there's been quite a
00:53build-up to this story in the last few weeks there have been briefings around that they
00:58wanted to spend more time here as recent as last weekend in fact um and there have been a lot
01:04of
01:04you know been a lot of conversations about how harry would like to spend more time here if his
01:09security was guaranteed we had that visit uh just back in july which went very well after quite a few
01:16hiccups in the first couple of days but crucially there was that reunion with king charles and so it
01:21set the stage but even friends of the couple i think have been surprised um by this announcement
01:29even if they may have thought it was on the cards they weren't expecting it and and found out at
01:34the
01:34same time as most of us did so many questions just just so many questions like i don't even know
01:40where
01:40to start andrea what were you gonna say i have so many i don't even know where to start but
01:46i want to
01:46go back to yesterday's announcement because it was a surprise to us but like you said it has been
01:52brewing this kind of has been going on for months right emily am i right to say that this story
02:00was denied back in june that's right um there is another media outlet that had the story in june
02:08and was told it wasn't true um i imagine they're not best pleased now that the story has come out
02:15elsewhere but you can see this has obviously been many months in the planning um it would be something
02:20that i think people thought might happen people close to them thought might happen but hadn't
02:25expected it to happen quite as quickly as it did i think that while this is something they've been
02:31thinking about for a long time they've made the decision relatively recently so it was a question of
02:35everything coming together at the right time and my understanding is they feel like now is the right
02:41moment particularly for the children because of the ages they're at to bring them in start them in the
02:46new school year and get them settled into life in the uk but a lot of water has gone under
02:53the bridge
02:54since harry and megan left not all of it has been resolved in fact a great deal hasn't been resolved
03:01i feel like there is a bit of a mountain to climb for them in terms of both public perception
03:06in the uk
03:06but also in how they're going to be welcomed or not welcomed by the rest of the royal family
03:13can i ask my first question yeah please do go for it okay so the the thing i think the
03:20first thing that
03:21popped into my head when i saw this story that they're moving back to the uk is that i thought
03:26the
03:26reason that they hadn't brought the children back for many many years was because of the security
03:30risks and the lack of security that they have in the uk so this feels like like a big swing
03:36and like
03:36really unexpected so what is the what's the solution there are they going to get security now that
03:42they're going to be permanent residents is that the solution or had they just sort of decided that
03:48they're no longer gonna die on that hill you know well there's a bit of a three-way um silence
03:54on this particular angle of the story and as we know harry said as recently as last year
03:59he couldn't see a world in which he would bring megan and the children back to the uk because he
04:03feared for their lives you know he was really talking about it in such stark terms i mean the
04:08fact that the meeting with the king went unnoticed back in july until they announced it and the fact
04:15that they were able to move about and we know have quite a lovely summer holiday in the united
04:20kingdom without being seen by anyone um really showed that that wasn't necessarily the case
04:26but that being said obviously some kind of arrangement is now in place that they are satisfied
04:31with and that has meant they are happy to move back here now sources close to harry are not commenting
04:37on it at the moment the home office interestingly is also not commenting saying they wouldn't get
04:42into specifics of individual cases because naturally that could undermine any security
04:49provision and then even andy burnham our new prime minister for only about 10 minutes has come out
04:55today and said that it's a private matter now it's i think you know a lot of members of the
05:00public
05:00might disagree that it's a private matter this is something that's gone through the high court in
05:04this country it's been the subject of endless legal wrangles by harry and the suggestion that he may now be
05:12receiving taxpayer funded security is one that people will want to fully understand but i think
05:17that's something that's going to come out in the next few days it feels to me like they are dropping
05:21this story bit by bit to let people get used to the idea they're probably wanting to see the reaction
05:27as
05:27well i think you're absolutely right and the timing of it all is absolutely fascinating they are you know
05:35we're in what's traditionally known in the uk as silly season in the middle of august you know i don't
05:39like
05:39to use the q word but it's when most people are away there's not much going on parliament aren't
05:45sitting the royal family are on holiday generally it's the time of year where you're going to get a
05:51lot of weather stories you're going to get you know funny animal stories but not a massive breaking royal
05:57story like this and i think that's very interesting in itself um by the time this goes out we'll be
06:04just
06:04hours away as well from a costs decision being made in harry's case against associated newspapers
06:11you do wonder whether this story came now to perhaps take a little bit of the heat off that
06:16story that's another thing that's been rumbling on for a very long time but obviously this dwarfs that
06:21by comparison six years ago they left they said they couldn't live here any longer that it wasn't
06:26safe that they'd been hounded that they needed to find their freedom and lo and behold they're back
06:32where they started we know that it's been more than one more than six months for them planning
06:40their move back obviously we haven't known about it until now why did they wait for only three days
06:46before the announcement to tell the king well i think that it's probably not the first he's
06:54yeah it's probably not the first he's heard of it to be honest i think that it would be extraordinary
07:00if they hadn't mentioned to him the fact that they were considering this but i think they then
07:05presented it to him as a kind of done deal just on sunday um so as much as he may
07:11have been having
07:12conversations with his dad about this um they actually have pushed the button quite late and not
07:17a moment too soon you know because those children will be starting school in just two or three weeks
07:22from now um and inevitably other parents at the school are going to get to find out um they will
07:28naturally if there are extra security precautions in place will have been told by this school and
07:34aside from anything else they will want to get into their new home wherever that is and settle in and
07:40feel ready for day one of a new school with the children and so people are going to start seeing
07:46them and noticing them and talking about them so they had to go now i think the the biggest question
07:52i have as well is is why like why they're coming back because like you like what you just said
07:58emily
07:58that you know six seven years ago was their their freedom flight away from the uk and like that here
08:05they are right back where they started um and it's like what are the what are the motivations there
08:11well it's a really good question emmy i think there are quite a few factors going into this and you
08:16know people close to them will say it is about the kids education harry wanted them to go to school
08:21in the uk but i think it's also about proximity to harry's roots and his family you know he has
08:28talked so much about wanting to spend more time in the uk of being um you know patriotic and passionate
08:34about it and wanting to share that experience with his children but also about wanting to build a
08:39relationship with his father for his children you know and he talked about it in fairly um you know
08:47direct terms a little while ago he said he didn't know how long his father had left which went down
08:52extremely badly i mean the king as we've heard from queen camilla just this week is coping he's doing
08:58well he has you know kept going in spite of this regular cancer treatment but he is 77 years old
09:05um it's
09:06been a very long time having his grandchildren at the other side of the atlantic and i think that having
09:12had what was clearly now a successful meeting at highgrove um earlier this summer they want to
09:18sort of capitalize on that and move on from there and i think it also it helps with with their
09:24brand
09:25i'm not saying that they're just doing it for those reasons but they are famous because of their royal
09:32role their connections with the royal family and they have gone off and done other things we know
09:37megan's going to carry on with her as ever brand um in back in the us she'll be working on
09:43that from
09:43the uk it's business as usual as far as i can tell but harry has so much here that has
09:49been kind of his
09:50life's work so the invictus movement for example well child there are all these charities that he
09:57you know wants to give more to and it's harder for him to do that when he's across the atlantic
10:03but there is also a sense of them probably wanting to come back into the fold whether or not the
10:09wider
10:09royal family will allow that though we'll have to wait and see there's so much to unpack in what you
10:15just said because you know you mentioned family and people that he's left behind but he's burnt so
10:22many bridges you know it's it's hard to believe that family is motivation we also have megan who
10:31hasn't been able to rebuild her own relationship with her father um obviously harry is trying um
10:39what also i mean for me when i first saw it i did think you know we had talked to
10:44josh stone last year
10:45at the well child you know she shared a table with us with hello who are media partners she told
10:50us that
10:50harry had been having conversations with her about schools and about how he prefers the education in the
10:56uk so immediately that jumped up to me but then it has to be a financial reason it's funny that
11:03in
11:03the statement or in the the news when it broke it mentioned that they were keeping their three homes
11:08montecito portugal and the new one in the uk but now there are reports that they're selling
11:14their montecito home so again you know they might not want to give out all the information at the start
11:20but you know at the end we will know if they sell it or not and if financial reasons were
11:24behind it
11:25i think they're more likely too much when you're talking i think it's much more likely they'll keep
11:31it actually unless they're really forced into making some kind of financial arrangement but i
11:37think they'll want a foot on both sides of the pond absolutely they still will want to see doria
11:41they have their community in california you know megan has her business interests in there i can't see a
11:48world in which she wouldn't come back and forth and crucially that is what they wanted at the very
11:52start of mexit when they went to the sandringham summit what they wanted was a deal where they
11:57could go off and pursue their financial freedom they could have a foot in both camps they could
12:01come back and do their charity work in the uk and this feels very much like they've kind of forced
12:07this to come about um just through the passage of time through geography and through the sort of
12:16desire i suppose of the king to reconcile with his son as well i think it's absolutely fascinating
12:22and you know the mood music from the palace is very much you know no comment but it's been made
12:28very
12:29clear to me that there's no half in half out option there wasn't under queen elizabeth ii that is not
12:34going to change anytime soon but i suspect that people in the sussex camp would like to see that
12:40stance soften i think they feel that there's a world in which they could do some work that would
12:46complement the royal families that would be parting you know be contributing to their to their work
12:52and you have to look at other members of the royal family like your princess anne's like william and
12:57kate who are you know shouldering all the responsibility doing all the work but not going
13:03off and sort of feathering their own nests and pursuing their own commercial deals um and they're going
13:11to be questioning how on earth can they be allowed to do that i just i just have like question
13:16on
13:16question about this but like one like i guess the one of the most pressing ones and i i do
13:21apologize
13:21if this isn't sensitive it's just something that came to my mind and i'm sure it's come to a lot
13:27of
13:27people's minds as well is could this move be an insight into king charles's health situation
13:34look i don't think it correlates that strongly i think that he has been on well for a while
13:39he's actually you know in a fairly good place as far as we can tell at the moment but he
13:45is 77 you
13:46know no one will take their parents health for granted when they're at that age and you know being
13:52that far away from a loved one you're never going to feel like you're getting enough time with them
13:58and the king of course is an incredibly busy man even despite everything he is working
14:03every single day um other than christmas day he works around the clock we know that
14:08when he has a free 20 minutes he'll find something to fill it with so the chances of you spending
14:14time
14:14with him are vastly improved if you're on the same side of the ocean and you can just pop in
14:20and have
14:21tea with him or you can pop in and see him at high grove at the weekend can i ask
14:26the question that
14:26isn't on everyone's lips which is how william and catherine received the news and were they made
14:33aware before did they find out this sunday did they find out yesterday andrea you're saying that's not
14:40on everybody's lips that was my next question like i'm obsessed with like i i i would love to know
14:47because they cannot be happy with this development surely well what is intriguing about this is the
14:52complete radio silence um coming from that end of the the spectrum and what's interesting about it is
14:58that they're normally away at this time of year i imagine they're not delighted about this i mean
15:03it's going to be a very very difficult hill to climb and having them sort of suddenly back in the
15:09uk
15:09popping up doing things publicly if that's where they go with this um so much has been said and done
15:16that has damaged that relationship almost beyond repair i can't see a world in which um they would
15:23be welcoming them back with open arms but you would anticipate that the king will have spoken to william
15:29about this if he was made aware um we believe the waleses were made aware you know in that
15:35interfering period they didn't find out at the same time as the rest of the world so they've had time
15:39to
15:39process this interesting let's talk about what their life is going to look like there's something
15:47very interesting that i do want to tell you know our listeners a lot has been said about the uk
15:53and
15:53what life is in the uk and why megan didn't want to be here you know when she spoke to
15:59the cut back in
16:00i believe 2022 was it 2022 already or 2024 yeah i think time flies um yeah 2022 she said that
16:10she
16:10didn't want her kids to go to the school in the uk because they were you know drop off and
16:15um pickup
16:16would be horrible she would be hounded by 40 paps and it's funny that she says this because that's
16:23actually not true is it emily well how many photographs have you seen of william and kate doing
16:28the school run in all the years that those children have been at lambrook and at st tom and
16:33sorry at thomas's beforehand um there is in this country no market for images of the children and
16:40of course really strict rules around the reporting on children particularly when they're in education
16:45under the editor's code of practice which we all adhere to um obviously social media is a law unto itself
16:52but really that argument never really held water for me i feel that they're much
16:58more likely to get papped in los angeles or in california than they are in the uk i mean the
17:04biggest risk to um any children in the public eye right now is just a passerby on the street right
17:09who can just lift up their smartphone and take a photograph that's going to be something that
17:13prince george may have to contend with when he starts at eton and he's moving between school
17:18buildings um but that never really held water that argument for me the fact that they have come back
17:23now and they are going to be at school here proves that it's not that much of an issue
17:30we can't even you don't even see pictures of william and katherine out and about when they're not on
17:37official duty so we'll definitely see less of them here in the uk for sure i'd say so i think
17:44you know
17:44the fact that they came here and spent 10 days or whatever it was in july and were able to
17:49go about
17:49their business they were able to visit althorpe they were able to go to scotland they you know
17:55were able to visit friends all over the place um and clearly they probably did pop in and see their
18:00new home and perhaps even visited the school where the children would be going not that all went
18:05completely under the radar you know there was no mention of it anywhere in the media and it just
18:10proves that there is entirely possible for them to live privately here if they choose to
18:15what take do you think they're gonna take on so schools you know in the u.s they've started
18:20already some of them but in the uk they start following after the 2nd of september more or less
18:26do you envision a more eugenie princess way where they just go to school we don't really know anything
18:33about them or do you envision that they might copy their old royal formats of one photo released
18:41first day of school which one do you think they will adopt i think there's no reason for them to
18:46share if they don't want to um i think it would be odd for them to share you know they've
18:50been very
18:50protective of the children we've only ever seen the backs of their heads why would they suddenly
18:54you know bring them out into the wider world especially if they are concerned about security
18:58they're not going to want to draw any attention to where they are or the children's school
19:02there's no reason for them whatsoever to make a formal announcement you know the kids are not
19:06directly in line to the throne and well they are but they're quite far down now because you williams
19:12three children they're first and so there's no reason for them to do that and it would really be
19:18shooting themselves in the foot so in terms of what they're doing in the uk and like what they're
19:24going to be doing do you think they're going to try and get back into the royal family or do
19:29you
19:29think that they've accepted that that door is closed or do you reckon that they're hoping that being in
19:35the uk and reconciling with the king they will be able to do that half in half out thing that
19:41was
19:41kind of their initial ideal situation i look i think that that is possibly part of their thinking i
19:49think that they're going to carry on with what they're doing already so megan will be managing as
19:53ever she'll be working on that um you know probably at some weird hours now because the team are in
19:59la as we know um but that's business as usual as far as we know um harry's going to carry
20:05on doing
20:05the work he's been doing all along so that you know he has this role at better up he's going
20:09to
20:09be doing more with his charities and organizations on the ground because he'll physically be here and
20:14able to do it um and you know from a couple of people that i've spoken to at those organizations
20:20there's a lot of excitement about the fact that he's going to be much more available and i think that
20:26probably he's missed this side of his life it's what he's always known um it's actually what he
20:31is good at you know he's very great in the space with young children for example with veterans um
20:38but there is the the risk that they then are going to be accused of absolutely having their cake and
20:43eating it because they don't have the responsibility they can live a private life but they will be able
20:49to pop up and make the most of their association with the royal family and with the organizations
20:54they supported well in the royal family so you can imagine that you know that's going to
20:58probably turn a few heads within the family there'll be a lot of questions asked about that
21:03do you think there's going to be some sort of tell-all interview with the bbc or itv or sky
21:09or whoever
21:10with them explaining their reasonings for coming back i would be amazed if they made a decision like
21:17that given everything that's happened in the past if their um aim is indeed to sort of move back
21:23into the royal fold whether that's just as private citizens who want to have a family relationship
21:29or whether they want to have some semi-formal role in future it would be absolutely catastrophic
21:35for them to start saying any more about private uh conversations for example you know there's nothing
21:42to stop them talking about their own reasoning uh but i think if anything that they've learned
21:47over the last six years it's that airing your private business in public is going to cause you
21:54a lot of grief in the long run you know people in this country haven't forgotten that there is a
21:59generational divide younger people were very excited for them to go and find their freedom older people
22:05saw it as a snub to the late queen and the rest of the royal family i'm curious to know
22:09what that younger
22:09generation makes now because they don't look quite so daring and revolutionary anymore having come back
22:17to where they started they say it takes a village uh to help raise you know children who are harry
22:25and
22:25megan's village in the uk that's a really good question well we know they certainly got lots of
22:31friends here because they spent time uh staying with some while they were here uh in july obviously the
22:38family situation is a lot more tricky harry has in the past been very close to eugenie for example
22:43we know she's in portugal at the moment she's just given birth um to her baby daughter adelaide
22:49and um i think they're perhaps not as close as they once were and the same goes for beatrice both
22:55of
22:55those girls have had other family issues to concern them of course over the last year or so um i
23:02can't
23:02imagine that william and kate are going to be popping up anytime soon and offering to babysit
23:07but we do know they've got lots of friends uh the children have godparents living in the uk and they
23:13do still have a connection to charles spencer earl spencer um and his wife kat jarman they stayed with
23:19them very recently up at althorpe um they went to visit diana's grave and this is a point that i
23:26really want to make not only is it an important year for harry going into the invictors games returning
23:32to the uk next july it's also the 30th anniversary year of his mother's death and well spencer's kind
23:39of fired the starting gun on that anniversary he's going to be publishing a book a memoir about his
23:45sister next month which is early um but you can envisage that the next 12 months are going to be
23:52very
23:52diana focused and harry has always talked about being his mother's son he you know cites his mother
23:59as his inspiration um in so much of what he does i can't see a world in where he wouldn't
24:05want to
24:05be kind of central to that whole year of remembering and again that's something that's
24:11going to be a lot easier if he's in the uk wow do you think it's true that megan took
24:17one for the team
24:17here well you think that megan's not happy about it i think i think of the two of them this
24:24is going
24:25kind of yeah i think of the two of them for megan this will have been a harder decision um
24:30you know
24:31she has talked so much about um struggling in the uk the fact that she was away from friends and
24:36family
24:36um being within the royal family she obviously had a lot of issues um and she certainly blamed
24:43uh the uk and the media and uh various other elements for their decision to leave
24:50i think you know she has more to sort of turn her back on uh in the uk sorry she
24:57has more to turn
24:58her back on in california um but they've gone and they've done that and they you know let's not forget
25:03she was only in the royal family for about 18 months altogether and so they have gone and lived
25:10you know many more years than that in america and they've decided it's time for a change and this is
25:15like harry's chance to come home just as she had that chance to go home but yeah it will have
25:20been
25:20a compromise i'm sure she does she does like her royal title though like you know it's like she's
25:26she's kept but i'm not even saying that in like any sort of sassy way whatsoever it's just like i
25:31think
25:31it's a fact it's like she likes that she's duchess i think she likes that her children like have the
25:36royal titles that they you know that they well there was all that argument wasn't there in okra about
25:42about the children not being given titles that was a big part of her argument um about being
25:48treated unfairly so yeah she they can't really say now that they're not interested
25:54exactly so i do think that she does have uh i guess there is a desire there to be a
26:00part of the
26:01royal family because yeah her surname's sussig she's kept the duchess she's like you know her
26:06sort of personal branding is like duchess megan right so but well no but it's true though so it's like
26:11maybe there is an element where she wants to come back because this is where it
26:14holds meaning in the uk having this i think you're right and i think i'm just laughing because my
26:23it's my intrusive thoughts of uh you know because when you said she loves a title i was like well
26:27she does like being announced into her rooms of course yeah exactly and again that's not me being
26:34sassy that's just i just found it very funny and i had to share my intrusive thoughts with everyone
26:38sorry it happened it happened because we read it in a feature that she was announced into a room
26:43was that i think the context there but like um but yeah but the the uk is where that matters
26:48it
26:48doesn't matter in the us so you're absolutely right i think you're absolutely right and also is this
26:54proximity to the royal world you know the longer they are away from it the longer they live as private
27:01citizens in the united states the more that kind of magic wears off um and they just become any other
27:07celebrities you know living in california but what they have is this um the cachet of their
27:14association with a king in particular you know and harry is the king's son this is what he
27:18was born into but there's no denying that so much the attention that they have been given over the years
27:26uh not just by the public but by brands and uh people offering them commercial deals has come about
27:32because of their royal status yeah i mean there's already been talk this morning which
27:36my jaw dropped of a sandringham reunion at christmas do you think or when do you think
27:45we'll see the family reunited publicly is that even possible i'm talking remembrance i'm talking
27:51sandringham you know christmas at sandringham or any other big oh you know the princess of wales carol
27:57service if they spend christmas at sandringham you just know we're going to get a press release
28:02for that like kate and will have gone to the caribbean like there's no way surely like let's
28:08be real yeah i think very this is going to be very much one step at a time and from
28:13people i've been
28:14speaking to who know them i think they're very much working on the basis of let's get the children
28:20settled let's get started on what we want to do and then the rest you know is something to
28:27consider down the line but crucial to them is the relationship with the king you know
28:32you can't go any higher than him um and if you have him on side and you are spending time
28:38with him
28:39then that does half of the work for you and there is a risk i think that other members of
28:44the family
28:45continuing to avoid them it might make them look you know petty or unforgiving now there's a lot
28:52that would need to be forgiven let's be honest about this and you can absolutely understand why
28:57william and kate might never want to go there you know they uh their decision to leave affected that
29:04whole generation of the royal family and you know it's left a lot of responsibility on not just
29:11william's shoulders but on those of his children and then you've got all the things that they said you
29:16know about how um they were too formal and then feeling they didn't like being hugged
29:22william pushed harry into the dog bowl broke his necklace like it's endless it's endless and how can
29:29you possibly sit in a room and make small talk with somebody who you know has kind of betrayed you
29:35on an international scale so you can absolutely see from their point of view they want to focus on
29:41their own families they want to focus on their work and on their future i i think we're being
29:46a lot we're going to be a long time waiting to see that reunion happen emily we know the royals
29:50are at valmoral king charles arrived this week and we saw at the ceremony uh watching the ceremony
29:57were the tindals uh peter phillips harriet and her daughter georgina no doubt that this is the topic
30:07of conversation over about moral and the prince and princess of wales will probably soon join they
30:12normally join at the end of august a lot of tension a lot of uh you know harry chat i'm
30:19assuming
30:20i can't fly on the wall about moral right now i can't imagine whether he's going to start with this
30:28um you know you have to kind of assume that perhaps uh people were given the heads up on this
30:34before it
30:34was announced publicly certainly i think william was um the king is known as we know for three or
30:39four days now but there's still so much to unpick here isn't there how do you even know we're already
30:45you know in my family having discussions about who we're spending christmas with right that is a
30:50conversation that takes on so many different nuances um and you're right you know maybe this will be
30:57this this could be a bucklebird christmas for the prince and princess of wales emily you were saying
31:02that you think there's going to be more and more information that's going to be sort of drip fed to
31:06us in the coming weeks i think i think that you know there's so much that hasn't been explained um
31:12and it will you know stuff is coming out already um but i think particularly the security detail is
31:18absolutely fascinating you then have the costs issue um you know and probably by the time you're
31:23listening to this or watching this that may have been announced how is he going to pay for that
31:28who is going to help him pay for that what does that mean for their property portfolio
31:33what are they going to do for work well they're going to carry on doing what they've been doing
31:38what are they going to do that makes the difference you know other than them spending time with the king
31:43and harry getting to do more with invictus and well child will their lives look that different i mean
31:49for arch nilibert things are going to look incredibly different you know they're going to suddenly probably be the
31:54only kids in their local school with american accents um and they'll be you know talking about
32:00the holidays rather than christmas but you know that's a whole other story so there are a lot of changes
32:05that they need to get their heads around um but it's safe to say that it may have blown a
32:10hole in our
32:10holiday it's going to be something we're going to be talking about for weeks to come
