First 20 migrants deported from US arrives in Liberia under new 'entirely humanitarian' deal

Authorities in Monrovia announced on Tuesday the country would accept up to 1,200 foreign nationals deported from the US within a year.

00:02Twenty migrants deported from the United States have landed in Liberia.
00:07They're the first arrivals under a deal that could see up to 1,200 people sent there within a year.
00:15The plane touched down near the capital Monrovia on Thursday afternoon,
00:19where the new arrivals boarded a bus and were taken away by government staff.
00:25Liberia says the migrants are free to leave the country whenever they choose or to apply for asylum
00:31and insists they receive no compensation for taking part in the arrangement,
00:36though it will get support to strengthen its migration system.
00:40The move comes as President Trump's administration widens deportation eligibility,
00:46including for people who long held legal protection in the U.S. for fear of persecution in their home countries.
