13:44hundreds coming up here. Now, Richard. Richard, Christmas time. A Christmas carol we've heard about. What about a Christmas miracle?
13:51Well, you know, people are always asking, Judy or me or both of us, what was the interview we most
13:56remember? You know, all 21 years we were doing this morning and the Richard and Judy show on Channel 4.
14:01And, you know, you're tempted to say Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton or O.J. Simpson, all those big exclusives.
14:05And they were a privilege to do in many ways as journalists.
14:09But the ones that I always liked were about real people, you know, human interest stories. And every Christmas on
14:14both programmes, we used to try and find a Christmas miracle.
14:16And they're not hard to find. They're quite thick on the ground. And my favourite, because it's also quite sweet
14:21in a funny sort of way, but it's a sweet outcome,
14:23was a man who had created around about Christmas 1965. He was a young man working on a building site
14:28and he was clouted on the head by a crane and he was put into an immediate coma.
14:31And he was stuck in that coma for more than 20 years. And in about 1986, against all the strictures
14:37of the medical staff who wanted to switch him off and against his new young wife,
14:40he was only about 18 when it happened, and she said, no, one day he'll come out of this. And
14:44he did. And it was at Christmas and it was a sort of Christmas miracle.
14:47Well, it took him a few years to recover, but he did. He was pretty much back to normal.
14:50And one of the things that distressed him was that he didn't know anything that had happened in the world
14:54since 1965 and 1986.
14:56So his wife got the almanac. And every day for an hour, she would tell him about the big events
15:00of the moon landings, the fall of the Berlin Wall, all of that stuff.
15:02So we're doing a live interview with him at Christmas to talk about this.
15:06And a little light went on in my head as we were interviewing him, because I knew from the briefing
15:09notes he was a football fan.
15:10And I said, Marjorie, have you ever told Peter about what happened at Wembley in 1966?
15:15And she said, I don't think I have. And he said, no, I don't think you did.
15:18And I said, right, you remember before you got knocked out, it was the World Cup the following year.
15:22He said, that's right, of course. How did we do?
15:25And I'm thinking now, this is the last man in England to know that England won the World Cup.
15:29So I said, well, we did pretty well, actually. We got through the opening rounds.
15:32And we had a bit of a scare against Portugal. He said, oh, Eusebio.
15:35He said, yes. I said, Eusebio nearly did for us, but we got through.
15:38I said, as a matter of fact, we got to the quarterfinals.
15:39He said, never.
15:40I said, we did. And in fact, Peter, we got to the semis.
15:43No. Yes, we did. And it was a very tense game.
15:45But you're not going to believe this.
15:47But in June 1966, England met West Germany in the finals at Wembley.
15:51And he was flabbergasted.
15:52He said, was Greavesy still the striker?
15:55I said, no, it was Geoff Hurst.
15:56He said, he was useless.
15:57I said, well, just wait a second.
15:59Just wait a second.
16:00I said, actually, it was a very tight game.
16:02It went to extra time, Peter.
16:03I have to say the end score was 4-2.
16:06And he said, well, to West Germany.
16:07I said, the useless Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick.
16:10England won 4-2.
16:12And he literally jumped to his feet and did it.
16:14This man in his 60s and did a G around the studio.
16:17The last man in England to know we'd won the World Cup.
16:19And that made his Christmas.
16:21It was like a lovely sort of cherry on the cake.
16:23That's my favourite interview that we ever did.

24:46And one of the groups that he selects is words to do with horses.
24:51And so Rich and I were joking earlier, well, not joking,
24:53but thinking about all the metaphors to do with horses that would be suitable
24:56for the final, the last fence in the final straight, the winner's enclosure, etc.
25:01So it seemed quite fitting.

25:06Croupier, I think I've mentioned before,
25:07Croupier used to be somebody who rode behind somebody,
25:10so in the sort of second saddle on a horse.
