00:00This is the Injury Report, presented by NYU Langone Health.
00:04Man, talk about bad luck.
00:07Max Fried suffered a bone bruise in the same spot that already caused him two months earlier this season.
00:13And when the athletes hit IL, we talk about them on IR.
00:17So in today's Injury Report, we have Dr. Spencer Stein, orthopedic surgeon and assistant professor at NYU Langone,
00:25to talk about the curse of Max Fried's elbow.
00:28And if my man's going to be the same when he hits the mound again.
00:32Doc, appreciate you hopping on with us, taking time out of your busy schedule.
00:37Let's get straight into this, because we're talking about the same spot, Doc.
00:42Unfortunate coincidence for Max, or could this mean the original injury never fully healed and caused a possible flare-up?
00:52Well, thanks for having me. Happy to be here.
00:54Another Yankee injury we're speaking about in the crunch time of the season.
00:58But the question is, is it a recurrence injury or is it a new injury?
01:02And really, we don't know.
01:04Certainly, if you've had a prior injury, you are at risk for recurrence and re-injury in that area.
01:10There's a few possibilities of what may have happened.
01:13The bone may have not completely healed.
01:15Or the bone sometimes doesn't completely mature as it heals and then is at risk for re-injury.
01:22Million-dollar question here, Doc.
01:23When your patients come into your office with a bone bruise on their elbows or any other limb,
01:30what's usually the root cause of that?
01:34And does their rehab differ from Mad Max Fried?
01:39Listen, it is a tough injury.
01:41You know, it's hard to get bone to heal.
01:44And typically, it requires a shutdown and a period of immobilization and activity modification.
01:50The root cause, well, it really depends.
01:52Usually, it's chronic repetitive overuse.
01:55It could be working out too much.
01:56It could be something like a Tommy John injury.
01:58There's multiple factors.
02:00It even could be a little bit of arthritis.
02:01And as far as rehab and recovery, it's all dictated to the patient.
02:05It depends on patient-specific factors.
02:07What their injury is, where their injury is, how severe it is, and what their goals are.
02:12And we take care of everyone from pro athletes to people just trying to get back to work
02:17or people just trying to play with their kids.
02:19So it's all patient-dictated.
