The dog days of summer are behind us, even if Mother Nature didn't get the memo

Despite the name, the Dog Days actually have nothing to do with summer heat. The phrase dates back thousands of years and comes from Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky and part of the constellation Canis Major, or the "Greater Dog."
