Canada has suspended trade negotiations with the United States after Prime Minister Mark Carney said Washington introduced unacceptable demands during the final stage of discussions.

Carney said the U.S. proposals affected Canada’s auto sector, its ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries, and protections surrounding Canadian language and culture. He argued that the new conditions were unfair and economically damaging, saying, “they asked too much, and they offered too little.”

The Canadian prime minister stressed that Ottawa would not accept terms that compromise the country’s sovereignty. “We are masters in our own home,” Carney said, emphasizing Canada’s right to make its own economic decisions.

He also accused the U.S. of using economic integration as leverage and said Canada was prepared to respond to new American tariffs. Ottawa plans retaliatory measures while continuing to strengthen trade relationships beyond the United States.

The collapse of negotiations marks another major escalation in the growing trade dispute between the two neighboring countries.

00:01And while we believed earlier this week that we were moving towards a mutually beneficial
00:08agreement, in recent days the United States proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair,
00:15and undermined the net benefits for Canada and called into question the reliability of
00:21any deal.
00:23In short, they asked too much and they offered too little.
00:28More fundamentally, the cumulative effect of U.S. demands revealed the limits of their
00:35commitment to a true economic partnership.
00:39As I said earlier, as a result, last evening I suspended trade negotiations with the United
00:43States and directed our negotiators to return.
