There are few things more beautiful than a classic wooden sailing yacht under sail, and in this video Sailing Vessel Beauty has the pleasure of sharing the Gulf of America with a particularly beautiful example.

Alongside Beauty sails an Alerion, a classic design associated with the legendary naval architect and yacht designer Nathanael G. Herreshoff. With her graceful lines, traditional rig, and distinctive tanbark sails, she looks as though she has sailed straight out of another age.

Herreshoff's Alerion was designed in 1912 for his own use and launched in 1913. The original Alerion was a wooden centerboard sloop, about 26 feet overall, with the elegant sweeping sheer and hollow bow that became such distinctive features of the design. Herreshoff himself sailed her extensively, including around Bermuda.

Seeing a wooden boat like this under sail is a reminder of what sailing looked like before fiberglass, electronic navigation, and modern materials transformed the cruising world.

Wooden boats have a character all their own. The warm color of the timber, the traditional spars, the graceful overhangs, and the way the hull moves through the water seem to connect the sailor directly to the centuries-old tradition of working with wind and sea.

And then there are the tanbark sails.

Their rich reddish-brown color is unmistakable against the blue water and sky. Tanbark sails have long been associated with classic and traditional sailing vessels, and the color gives a wooden yacht an especially timeless appearance. Even today, traditional sailing fleets continue to use tanbark sails, keeping that visual connection with classic sailing alive.

For a sailor aboard Beauty, this is one of those unexpected moments that makes a passage memorable.

Beauty is a Bristol 32, herself a classic sailing design, and here she is sailing alongside another vessel whose design reaches back more than a century. Two different generations of sailing technology, sharing the same wind and the same sea.

There is something almost timeless about it.

No matter how much technology changes, the fundamentals remain the same: a hull moving through the water, canvas drawing wind, a sailor tending the boat, and the endless horizon ahead.

As Beauty continues offshore, the Alerion gradually becomes part of the Gulf horizon, her tanbark sails standing out against the blue.

For a moment, the modern world seems very far away.

Just two sailing vessels under canvas, moving together across the open Gulf of America.

Classic boats. Classic sails. And the timeless beauty of sailing.
