00:01An e-hailing driver pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Monday
00:06to attempting to murder a woman by dousing her with petrol and setting her on fire, leaving
00:11her seriously injured earlier this month.
00:14Angkam Tong, 59, entered the plea after the charge was read to him before Judge Suritabuddin.
00:21He was accused of committing the offence against Lottery Outlet employee Gan Su-Teen, 62, at
00:28the premises in Taman, Pusat, Karpong, Sentul, at 7.51 a.m. on August 9.
00:35The charge was framed under Section 307, subsection 1 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum
00:41prison sentence of 20 years upon conviction.
00:45Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Shaqeela Mohammed Sharif did not offer bail, citing the seriousness
00:51of the offence, which is non-bailable, and allegations that the accused had previously attempted
00:56to flee.
00:57However, lawyer Lee Kang-Fat, representing Ang, applied for bail, saying his client worked
01:03as an e-hailing driver and had an irregular income.
01:07Judge Surita granted Ang bail of RM15,000 with one surety and fixed September 25 for mention
01:15to allow the prosecution to submit the relevant documents.
01:19The media had previously reported that an elderly woman suffered burns to about 50% of her body
01:25after being splashed with a liquid believed to be petrol and set on fire at her workplace.
