00:00AI technology is being used to protect California's from wildfires.
00:05So our mission is to keep all wildland fires 10 acres or less.
00:10So these AI cameras will help us get out there faster to keep up with that mission.
00:16Before, firefighters were typically alerted of fires by citizens calling a 911 emergency dispatcher.
00:23But since the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection launched its pilot program,
00:29AI has already shaved precious minutes off response times, reports Reuters.
00:34It would basically take me sitting here all day, every day, 24-7 for me to do smoke detection.
00:41So that is not my job. I use the camera system to, once we do get a call.
00:46But if a detection is automatically happening, then that's what can be really helpful to us
00:53because it's basically patrolling 24-7.
00:56The platform leverages 1,036 cameras erected by various public agencies and power utilities throughout the state,
01:04each one capable of rotating 360 degrees at the command of remote operators.
01:08Since the program started, AI has already become more accurate, being able to detect false positives.
01:14I think it's 100% applicable throughout anywhere in the world,
01:19especially now that we're experiencing a lot larger and more frequent fire regimes.
01:24And with climate change, it's coming everywhere. It's spreading.
01:29Have a great day.
