00:00Hi, my name is Avni and my topic is why do we procrastinate even when we know we shouldn't?
00:10Okay, so have you ever had something important to do and you knew you had to do it,
00:17but somehow you still ended up scrolling through your phone, watching videos, or doing literally anything else or nothing at
00:28all?
00:28That's procrastination.
00:32And the interesting thing is, procrastination doesn't always mean that you're lazy.
00:39Sometimes there's actually a lot more going on behind it.
00:46One major reason we procrastinate is because our brain naturally prefers things that give us immediate reward or satisfaction
00:58Studying for an exam might help us in the future, but scrolling Instagram or watching videos gives us entertainment immediately.
01:12So, when we know that what is more important, our brain can still choose the easier and more rewarding option.
01:24Another reason is that we sometimes avoid tasks because they may feel over-filming.
01:38Imagine having an entire chapter to study, just thinking about finishing the whole thing can make you feel stressed.
01:50So, instead of starting, you keep postponing it, right?
01:56And this creates a cycle.
02:00You postpone the task, then you feel guilty and keep postponing it, okay?
02:09Then you feel more stressed and because you're stressed, you avoid the task even more.
02:16So, how do we break that cycle?
02:20One simple thing is to stop thinking about completing the entire task and just focus on starting.
02:30Yep, that helps.
02:31Instead of saying, I have to study the whole chapter, tell yourself, I'll just study for 10 minutes.
02:44Once you start, the task usually feels much more easier or, say, less difficult than it did in the starting
02:57in your head.
02:59Another useful thing is to make the first step extremely easy.
03:06Keep your book on your desk.
03:09Put your phone away for a while and decide exactly what you're going to do before you start.
03:18And most importantly, don't label yourself as a lazy just because you procrastinated.
03:28Understanding why you're avoiding something is much more useful than simply blaming yourself.
03:36I think procrastination is something almost every student does or experience at some point.
03:45The goal isn't to become perfectly productive all the time.
03:51It's simply to understand your own behavior and learn how to work with it.
03:57So, the next time you catch yourself saying, I'll do it later or maybe don't wait for motivation.
04:05Just start with 5 or 10 minutes because sometimes the hardest part isn't doing the task.
04:16It's simply just starting it.
04:20So, yeah, that is all.
04:23Thank you so much.
