00:00As Jurassic Park opens in the UK, its star Lord Richard Attenborough is already at work on his next film.
00:07The director of such films as Gandhi, Cry Freedom and Chaplin is trying something different this time out, as Sherry
00:12Sylvester reports.
00:17On location in his native England, Lord Richard Attenborough is directing what he calls his first love story.
00:24Shadowlands is based on the life of British author C.S. Lewis and stars Anthony Hopkins and Deborah Winger.
00:31It's very exciting for me because I've never done anything quite like that before.
00:34I tend to get labeled with tens of thousands of crowds and so on.
00:38Whereas in truth, what I love is working with the actors.
00:42But being an actor is another matter.
00:44One month shy of 70, the director took another risky move as he stepped in front of the cameras for
00:49the first time in 14 years.
00:51He plays billionaire John Hammond in Jurassic Park, the developer behind the amusement-turned-nightmare.
00:58When they opened Disneyland in 1956, nothing worked.
01:02But John, if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists.
01:06He took the role because he is a fan of director Steven Spielberg, who had already asked him to appear
01:12in two other films.
01:13But once he said yes, the stage fright set in.
01:16I'm not allowed to use the sort of language that I would wish to use to tell you the state
01:20of my belly and my mind on the night before we started shooting.
01:24Oh, God, I don't think I slept a wink.
01:27And the director, producer, and actor, who was knighted Sir Richard in 1976, recently added another title, Lord, named by
01:35the Queen as a peer to the House of Lords.
01:38He got the word while working on Shadowlands.
01:40All responded appropriately to the lofty title.
01:43The entire crew, about 60 of them, were all wearing gold coronets.
01:49The only sad thing was that the sequence was in the rain.
01:54And so after about an hour or so, all the coronets had rather wilted.
01:58Lord Attenborough may be enjoying more acclaim in England as Jurassic Park opens there.
02:03But unlike the book, his character lives through the dino experience, a fact he pointed out to a studio executive.
02:10And I said, ah, one of the sad things, I said, is I've been robbed of my great death scene.
02:16He said, well, you may have been robbed of a death scene.
02:18You may not have been robbed of a sequel.
02:22Not too fast, young man.
02:25Sherry Sylvester, CNN Entertainment News, Hollywood.
02:28I would.
02:29I would.
