00:04Malik Naver's practice for the first time without a red non-contact jersey things look like they're
00:10trending in the right direction for league to play in that week one game against the Cowboys
00:15what's going on everybody this is your post-practice report for the New York Post Sports
00:19Brandon London here Steve Serby in the words of Lloyd Christmas so you're telling me there's a
00:25chance Malik practice today what were your thoughts yeah this may have been the best he's looked at
00:32least John Harbaugh thought so as you said the red jerseys off he'll be ready for not contact not
00:40full contact but protect each other contact the rest of the week and you know obviously this
00:49changes the entire complexion of the offense I expect him to be ready for week one coach Harbaugh
00:56will not take that same tack because he doesn't want to jinx it of course absolutely and a lot can
01:02happen between now and September 13th at MetLife against the Cowboys but he's definitely trending
01:09in the right direction and even if he has to be on a pitch count which he may be against
01:16the Cowboys
01:16he will be at MetLife Sunday night prime time versus the Cowboys barring something unforeseen I think
01:26that's going to be hard to put him on a pitch count especially if he's feeling 100 percent
01:31what we saw today let's before we go in terms of how much he could play and then we'll talk
01:36about
01:37what the offense is going to look like with neighbors back as the wide receiver one but I saw a
01:41crossing
01:41route that he called today turned up field showed some burst finished the finish the catch and run
01:47so that was something I kept an eye on we saw the burst we saw him make a spectacular catch
01:53on an
01:53underthrown football right a guy don't worry for a deep curl route looks good ball may have been
02:00punched out after because he didn't get tagged or anything but not worried about that he caught four
02:04balls he caught I think he got four or five okay he caught four but the one five let's say
02:09five the one
02:09that was most impressive Serby Giants fans out there was the one he didn't come down with
02:15early in that team period Jackson Dart threw a high one on a on a on a on a like
02:20a like a deeper cross
02:21goes up for it he drops it he gets the drop for that one goes up for it launches up
02:27looks athletic
02:28hits the ground rolls a little bit pops up and walked away like nothing happened I always tell people
02:34when it comes to coming back from an injury especially when we talk about like a knee your leg your
02:39wheel
02:39as a receiver we need our wheels it's not about the confidence going up for the football it's when
02:45we come down and land awkwardly he rolled around for a little bit nobody just nobody landed more
02:51awkwardly more often than you did yeah yeah yeah right which which I'm just I'm teasing I'm teasing
02:57yeah but the fact that he got up and just walked away like nothing was wrong no limp no nothing
03:03that's
03:03encouraging if you have had just come down from Mars which some people think I just got here from Mars
03:09you would not have known Malik neighbors had suffered such a severe injury yes and had
03:16undergone two surgeries it could you tell I couldn't tell not at all he looked like all the other he
03:22looked like Odell he looked like Mooney he looked like Malachi Fields he looked like Isaiah likely who
03:29will be the number one with Malik being 1A in the very beginning yes of the year started off but
03:37uh he looked he didn't I couldn't tell yeah right there's no way of telling this guy had had suffered
03:43such a severe injury you could see down in training camp after he would run around or do a rep
03:51there was a
03:52slight limp the slight gimp and you know you kept an eye on that that's gone you don't see that
03:58at all
03:59you got to credit the trainers and the strength program you got to and the coaches for nurturing
04:06Malik to this point and of course the arduous rehab that Malik himself underwent yeah and there's a kid
04:13that is chasing greatness knows he can be great and will be great if he's healthy now this is where
04:21the fun begins because I saw Matt Nagy coaching his ass off today during uh routes on airs they're
04:27running some sort of like shallow crosses wants them to keep running versus man sit it down versus
04:32zone that's basic NFL stuff but just the way that he was so involved today he knows something we don't
04:41know in terms of what this offense can look like now that he's got the the guy the guy you
04:47know the
04:47guy the guy he's back he should be back and he's got other guys Jackson Dart will have some options
04:54now without a doubt without a doubt Malachi Fields six foot four who I think is going to be week
04:59one
04:59I think Malachi Fields is going to be the wide receiver two of this football team well what about
05:04Isaiah Likely I mean wide receiver two meaning when they call the starters right it's going to be
05:09Malik Neighbors and Malachi Fields but in terms of who's going to get the targets and touches
05:15Isaiah Likely and Malik Neighbors I feel as though both going to have at least eight plus targets in
05:21that first football game so you're Jackson Dart you've got Malik Neighbors returning to health maybe
05:27not a hundred percent but close enough yep hopefully yep you've got six foot four and a half Isaiah
05:34likely yep you've got six foot four Malachi Fields how tall are you six foot four five six five all
05:41right I'll go six two targets this height this size yeah for Jackson Dart and and even almost
05:48what's important to to to know is that John Harbaugh will be taking heat off of Dart with a smash
05:59mouth running game and that's why Najee Harris has been added to the mix yep and then you throw in
06:06Calvin Austin the third who I think is having just as good as camp as any receiver out there he
06:12made a
06:12beautiful catch today yes he did another that he keeps coming down with the football Jackson Dart
06:18continues to feed this kid and he continues to put some sort of Dart equity in there meaning that Dart
06:24knows I can throw the football with him being such a short receiver you would think that all right you
06:29think all right I got to put the ball on him every single time this kid has catch radius he
06:33gets open
06:34he's wiggly caught a two-hander over his shoulder heading to the right sideline I think he's going he's
06:40going to be a guy that they scheme up some stuff for on third downs he'd make you he'll make
06:45you miss
06:45in a phone booth I really like what he's been able to add to this giant's offense in terms of
06:51him
06:51carving out a role so receiver wise we've got neighbors we've got Malachi Fields you trade up
06:57into the third round and this kid's making plays he's not going anywhere Calvin Austin I don't I feel
07:03as though he's not going anywhere and Darius Slayton is still around Darius Slayton's still around now
07:08where does that leave you for that last or maybe two last wide receiver spots I think if you're an
07:14Odell
07:14Beckham Jr. fan you're hoping the Giants can trade one of their Darnell Mooney let's say today
07:24Kayshawn Booty was traded okay to the Texans okay so that eliminated one option for trade for a veteran
07:31receiver that a team might be looking at yeah so you know look everybody virtually everybody's rooting
07:39for Odell he's moving well yes you wish he could have caught that path that end zone pass in Miami
07:45but it's a it's it's an uphill climb but it's still doable for Odell Friday night against the Jets
07:53he can light that stadium on fire if he comes down with one if he came down with that catch
07:59in the
07:59end zone that Dolphins game I would have slotted him in as for sure he makes this football team now
08:05I'm not saying like one catch or drop means like you're gonna make it or not but for him I
08:11always
08:11say it's gonna come down to two plays uh two catches in this preseason for him he had the one
08:17on the
08:17sideline made some guys miss showed that he still has that he can still be dynamic showed that the
08:24catch in the end zone would have been the cherry on top I feel like to be like okay you
08:29gotta slate him
08:30in because watching him play in practices and in games he is running I think he's a better route
08:36runner now than he was this first stint with the Giants because he would rely so much on just pure
08:41athleticism now he knows how to tell a lie on his route stem he knows how to set a defender
08:47up so I
08:48feel like that would have been the catch but how funny is it he'll have another chance he'll have
09:00preseason game to perform to make a team you know life full circle because you know why Odell dropped
09:07that end zone pass why's that he didn't try to one-hand it yeah probably could be but his body
09:12has been holding up that was the key 33 years old father time the enemy of course but he his
09:20body has
09:20held up and he looks like he could run all day maybe he can yes and like you say he's
09:26a smarter
09:27receiver now and again everybody's rooting for him and he'll have his one last chance against the
09:33Jets on Friday night yeah uh uh by the way what did you think of the uh the leadership council
09:40uh who are the guys who are the we're talking we're pivoting here talking about the leadership
09:45council that they just put together five guys five guys that were voted eight guys eight guys
09:50five of whom I okay nailed correctly okay last week when I wrote a piece about the leadership
09:56council uh I didn't have Jameis Winston in there um I didn't have Manhurts in there oh interesting okay
10:03and so who's the eight can you name the eight for us I can try okay go ahead Jackson Dart
10:08Jameis Winston Chris Manhurts Andrew Thomas Jordan Stout he's the punter that
10:17yep yep Harbaugh brought with him he's a leader Brian Burns that what I got Brian Burns there's
10:22six two more that's six and there's two more and uh let me see I had Darius Slayton on there
10:28he didn't make it he didn't I had Illuminor on there he didn't make it Tremaine Edmonds Tremaine
10:34Edmonds is one more seven we're missing one guy now right one let's say Paulson Adebo Javon
10:39Holland maybe Javon Holland Javon Holland's the other guy okay uh and that surprised me um because
10:46Javon Holland didn't have the year that Giant fans were expecting a year ago but he is the leader
10:52in that DB room like everything goes through Vaughn they call him Vaughn like every like when you hear
10:58he's the loudest um he is the one that I believe they respect the most he's like that big hole
11:03yeah
11:03well the player the players voted for it so there's your eight-man leadership council and Harbaugh has
11:08always had a leadership council and if you remember when Tom Coughlin started to become the kinder
11:15gentler Tom Coughlin it was the leadership council that paved the way for the Giants first Super Bowl
11:21during the 2007 season because they they're kind of like your they're kind of like that your agent
11:28you know they're the ones that as a as a player you go to them and you're saying things like
11:35when
11:35can we get a pool table that you know in the locker room are we going to do ping pong
11:38can we have a ping
11:39pong table in the locker room those are the guys that come together they go talk to Harbaugh and be
11:43like
11:43hey this is the vibes in the locker room this is what the people are saying Harbaugh had a funny
11:48line
11:48during his press conference when he was asked whether they might get a pool table he said well
11:53if we win we might have a golf simulator you get what you want when you're winning games all right
11:59uh finish the soft survey because he talked about the rest of these practices these two remaining
12:03practices of the week being more of like an in-season practice I don't know if we'll get full pads
12:09maybe we do but they'll protect themselves obviously it's going to be a controlled tempo
12:13you know John Harbaugh has done a lot of that um controlled tempo type practices throughout the
12:18course of training camp finishes off these last two days before training preseason officially ends
12:27for this team on Friday well they've got to get Jackson Dart ready to play against the Jets he didn't
12:35play
12:35in Miami he's got a new offense to learn which he's been learning I would like to see him play
12:41at
12:41least a half against the Jets what are your thoughts a full half a full half I was going to
12:45give him a
12:45quarter I was going to give him a quarter like three series and hopefully two of those series could be
12:50extended series where you can get six to eight plays within those within those series if you have
12:56if he plays a half or if you have them in there so close to the season and the full
13:00half that means you
13:02don't see what you want to see yeah but there's nothing like game action especially when you're
13:06learning a new offense without a doubt without a doubt and he didn't play in Miami so his reps his
13:14game day reps would be few and far between between last week's preseason opener I see what you're saying
13:22I see what you're saying the opener on September 13th so look John Harbaugh doesn't coach scared we know
13:29that no Jackson Dart we know doesn't play scared not at all so get him out there let's see him
13:35for
13:35a half all right what do you guys think you think Jackson Dart and that's first team offense to play
13:39for a half a couple series we want to hear in the comments below thank you guys for watching another
13:44episode of Blue Rush post-practice report from the New York Post Sports
13:48you
