00:00Want to get ahead at work? Here's one tip to become a better leader. If you're the person
00:04who keeps your head down, works hard, and never wants to rock the boat, that might actually be
00:09holding you back. An MIT researcher recently studied what helps people move into leadership
00:13roles. And one trait stood out, assertiveness. The study was published in the Journal of Applied
00:20Psychology, and it followed 471 employees at a Fortune 100 company. Out of those employees,
00:26some of them were randomly assigned to complete nine weeks of debate training.
00:3118 months later, those employees were 12% more likely to be promoted. Why? Because debating isn't
00:38really about arguing. One of the study's lead researchers says American workplaces often
00:43reward people who confidently share their opinions. Doing so can signal confidence, passion, engagement,
00:49motivation, and those are all qualities that leaders tend to notice. So here's today's challenge. Don't
00:54leave your next meeting without contributing at least once. Ask a question, share an idea,
00:59or build off someone else's point. You don't need to dominate the conversation. You just need
01:03to make sure that your voice is a part of it. For more tips on how to get better at
