00:00Former leaders returning to PKR should not expect an automatic election ticket,
00:05says Federal Territory's PKR Chief Azman Abidin.
00:09Azman told FMT that PKR President Anwar Ibrahim's willingness to accept
00:14former leaders back was meant to strengthen the party, not guarantee candidacy.
00:19He explained that names must be proposed by branches to the State Leadership Council
00:23before reaching the President and central leadership,
00:26with winnability taking priority over experience.
00:30Azman was responding to veteran PKR leader Tian Chua's interest in returning as an MP
00:35and contesting Batu again, although Tian Chua acknowledged the final decision rested with party leaders.
00:41Tian Chua, a two-term Batu MP, missed the 2018 election after his nomination was rejected
00:48over a RM2,000 court fine. He later backed independent candidate P Prabhakaran, who won Batu.
00:54Tian Chua was sacked from PKR in January 2023 after contesting Batu as an independent
01:01against P Prabhakaran, whom the party had chosen to defend the seat.
01:06Azman, also Anwar Ibrahim's political secretary in his capacity as Prime Minister,
01:11added that experience, past performance, loyalty and commitment to PKR's principles would be assessed.
01:18He expressed confidence that returning leaders were doing so to strengthen Anwar's government,
01:24rather than simply seeking an opportunity to contest elections.
