00:05new crisis hitting the country, the United Nations warned on Tuesday.
00:10UNICEF's Afghanistan representative Tajuddin Ayewali said that if there is no treatment
00:14or rapid intervention, those children are at risk of dying.
00:18The UN agency added that the total amount of malnourished children has surpassed 3.7
00:23million across the country, though most are not classified as severe cases.
00:28Afghanistan has endured repeated periods of widespread hunger in recent decades as it
00:33had struggled through civil war and other crises. An economic collapse followed the Taliban government's
00:39return to power after U.S.-led forces withdrew in 2021, creating instabilities greatly affecting
00:45children. Ayewali said that nearly 40 percent of children admitted to hospitals with severe
00:51wasting and medical complications were babies under the age of six months old. Meanwhile,
00:56children under two years of age make up more than 80 percent of severe acute malnutrition cases
