00:00All right, things are changing with the Houston Astros, Clint, as Dana Brown is out, out as
00:10general manager. The Astros and Dana Brown have mutually agreed to part ways the team has
00:19announced. Brown's responsibilities will be transferred, or transition, excuse me, to
00:24assistant GMs Charlie Cook, everybody loves Charlie, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, and
00:33to senior advisor Jeff Bagwell, Jim Crane will oversee baseball operations through the
00:41transition period. They are still in first place, mind you. Now, they have a losing record,
00:47and they have just gone 3-6 on a nine-game homestand against the Mariners, Angels, and
00:56A's. And I don't know if that's what sent him over the edge. I am not certain, but that is
01:05clearly the decision they have made to move past Dana Brown, which the timing is kind of
01:12weird on this, Clint, right? Like, they allowed him to get through the trade deadline, and
01:19they made this decision. Now, I know he nixed him with the Braille situation, but he did
01:24allow him to trade a Spencer-Eragetti, which I would only assume he was in on as well, if
01:32that is the case of where we are now. But, Clint, overall, let's start here. And 7-1-3-5
01:40-7-2-4-6-10,
01:41and like I said, be thinking of this, because we'll discuss this in a second. How are you
01:45feeling about Jim Crane and his ability to hire the right guys to fill this void of Dana
01:53Brown and what we're hearing, potentially, a new manager? But your thoughts on this as
01:58this came down today?
02:01Yeah, look, I mean, I think Dana Brown obviously was a miss. I mean, I don't know where you,
02:08I mean, Lunau was a grand slam. Hinch was a grand slam. I would say Dusty was a grand
02:14slam. You know, I don't know where you, how you feel about Click, but he got, he won a
02:20World Series, didn't he?
02:21He won a championship on a couple pennants.
02:23Yeah, so, I mean, you know, I may not like him, but Dana Brown is the only one to me.
02:29Even Joe Espada, when Dusty decided to step aside, look, I'm not, I wasn't going to stand on a
02:36mountain and yell for Joe Espada, but the, the thought of hiring from within to keep
02:40the chemistry in the, in the clubhouse where it was, as long as you possibly could made
02:44sense. I don't have to agree. I like the method to the madness. Dana Brown was an
02:48outsider that he brought in and clearly, you know, the, the, this thing's gone the
02:53wrong direction. Um, I look, I think Dana's, Dana's made some good moves. I think Dana's,
02:59you know, as a GM has made some bad moves. Um, I, I don't know, to be honest with you,
03:05I personally don't know what moves Dana made and what moods Jeff made, what mood Jim Crane
03:10made. I have no idea when, when Jim Crane steps in and vetoes a trade at the trade deadline,
03:16that throws everything for me into question of, of what relief picture. Yeah. How much
03:21was Dana Brown really in control of from, from a big picture, like big move type types,
03:28whether those moves were made or not, but, but big moves, how much was he really in control
03:33of Kyle Tucker and, and Bregman and, and, and, um, uh, what was, uh, Lee Dredge, the guy
03:40that Tyler, the fake, the fake, Oh, uh, Framber Valdez, like, like how much, how much was
03:46he really, did he really have any say so in that? So, and I'm like, maybe he did. I don't
03:51know. I'm not on the inside. So, um, I, I just, I feel like Dana Brown, obviously by their
03:58own admission is, is the first one that was really just a head scratcher of like, how'd
04:03you land here? How, you know, what's next kind of move for me at the Joe, a spotted thing
04:10not working out or looking like it's not going to work out. I can understand that the, the
04:14Dana Brown is the move that I, that I just can't, can't quite get behind and, and which
04:19throws into question, obviously the next move and, and whether I've never liked the whole
04:25let's fire the GM, but let all the guys that were sitting in a room with him, hang
04:28around and make decisions like that's, that's been, that's an interesting. Clearly
04:31it's probably over for all of those guys. When the season ends, whenever the season
04:36ends, they go in a different direction, but I know it is his team and he gets to do
04:44whatever he wants to do. It just does to me, Tyler seemed that Jim Crane is, is too
04:51involved. He's all powerful right now. That's for sure. Like I, like it is like,
04:58it's not a, you know, we talked to Cal and Hannah all the time and they're like,
05:03yep, we trust Nick and we trust D'Amico and we let them, we let those guys do
05:07their things. They, they did the hard part of hiring them and then we let them do
05:11their thing. I don't think that's how it goes with him. No, clearly it doesn't. He
05:16vetoed a trade for a reliever who is an ERA above four that multiple times this
05:23year, he basically was, was doing an IL stint in the bullpen. They just weren't
05:29pitching him. So he, he, he metal, he metals in that and it feels like it'd be
05:37one thing, Clint Tyler, if this is a situation of, well, man, I feel like I got a
05:41metal in this because these guys, but no, I think he wants to, but I think he
05:45wants to be a part of it. He wants to help make the decision. He wants to do
05:51these things, right? I don't like, I don't know if, if James click and the rest
05:58of them come to me and say, Hey man, I know we've, we've had to make some moves
06:03to roll through one of these, but man, you know, Correa is really important to what
06:08we do. Like we've got to be able to pay one of these guys. I know we let Springer
06:12go and I know we let Cole go and I know we let, but we need, he's like, nah, I
06:16got it. I got it. So that, that, that to me is my concern is the next hiring
06:23process for both the GM and the manager may not necessarily be the best guys for
06:30the, for the roles, but they're going to be the best guys for the roles that work
06:34with Jim. Well, that look that, that, this is the bigger question to me. It's
06:38not about the general manager, Dana Brown. He got fired. It's more about like
06:43what direction are the Astros going to go in? Cause here, here's the deal. And
06:47it, and it does to a certain degree, I think tie into what you're saying, Ryan.
06:52Like if you got an owner that wants to be involved, damn it, he's going to be
06:55involved. If I owned a team, I would decide if I want to be involved. If I wanted to
06:58be involved and y'all's ass would listen, cause I own a team. That's just part of it.
07:01The problem, the problem in Houston to me is since Hinch, Lunau and Crane, we're
07:10all, we're all aligned and winning and everything was going good. And look, I
07:14didn't, I didn't cover them as closely then. I maybe, but I like that. It
07:19didn't, it seems like there's multiple people in the building pulling the rope
07:23the opposite direction. Like you cannot tell me that what we watched with Dana
07:29Brown and Dusty Baker clearly not having met morning meetings and discussing
07:34what's going on. You can't tell me that's a good relationship.
07:37Oh yeah. And it's not a good look for the organization where two people are
07:41saying different things. Yeah. But, but like beyond that, Ron, if you're the
07:45manager and I, and I, and I'm the, and I'm the general manager and we're both
07:49going to the media and saying different things, somebody stepping on somebody's
07:52toes like that. There's no way that's healthy. Right. And then you throw the, you
07:56throw in the mix, the Jeff Bagwell piece, having the guy that's a hall of
08:00famer that's in the owner's pocket, that's got his nose in everything that's
08:05going on. And I'm not saying he shouldn't, I'm just saying that that's a,
08:09seems to be a reality of what's going on is you got a hall of famer that's doing
08:14reporting back to the, to the owner. And so there's no way that that guy in the
08:19general manager and the man, like all of that is kosher and, and ideal for
08:23everybody working together. There's got, there's gotta be somewhere in that mix.
08:29There's no way that there's, I don't know if animosity is the right word, but
08:33there's gotta be some distrust. Like you got all of those pieces, like from the
08:38ownership to the ownership's right arm and bag well to the general manager to the
08:43man, man, you gotta all be pulling in the same direction. Friction's not bad, but
08:47you gotta be pulling in the same direction. It doesn't seem like just based on the
08:52little bit of knowledge that we have from covering them, it doesn't seem like
08:56they're all pulling in the same direction. And I don't know how that's the part.
09:00I don't care if crane wants to be involved. I don't care if he got, he's got
09:04bag well, then go get, go get all like people that'll fall in line all the way
09:08down and at least be one.
09:12Yeah. Like I, in my opinion, the next person who comes on, if it's a GM, like I don't
09:18know how fired up they're going to be with knowing that Jeff Bagwell is like
09:21around and has the ear of the owner and can, and can convince the owner to do
09:28something. He's working with guys in spring training. Yeah. But that, but see, but I'm
09:32cool with that role for Jeff. Yeah. Work with players. But his role is not just, he ain't
09:38just out here like working with players and helping guys. He's out there about to
09:41make decisions. Ron, his role is Dana Brown. The minute I tell Jim Crane, I want
09:48the GM job, it's mine. You think so? You think, you, you think that's, you think
09:55that's on the table, Tyler? No, no, no, I'm not saying that. No, I'm not saying
09:59that's what's going to happen. I wouldn't roll it out completely. No, but, but right.
10:04He literally Bagwell came out a year or two or whenever they hired Dana Brown and
10:07said he didn't want the job. He said, you know, he said, Oh no, I don't, I don't want
10:10to be a GM. My point is not, my point is not that he literally would do it. My
10:15point is, is that's the human, that's the hall of famer that's walking around
10:19there is like, I'll come get your job. Yeah. I mean, that's the guy that's
10:24working in your cages with the players that you're bringing in, but I'm going to
10:28help make these decisions. Yeah. And I'm going to talk to the owner. Yeah. And I
10:31don't, and I don't think, I don't think that, that Jeff's trying to sabotage. I
10:35think he wants the best for the Astros. I think he wants them to win. Sure. Yeah. I just
10:39don't know if that is the best. I mean, I, I think, look, I think Nick Casario, I
10:44think he probably genuinely deep down, he still likes Jack Easterby, but he knew
10:48better. He knew Jack Easterby being in that building over there was not going to
10:51be conducive to, to, to being functional and, and, and winning games. Oh no. I don't
10:58know. We can continue after that. I'm just telling you that, that's, I mean, that, that
11:02don't, that don't, that don't connect, man. It don't compute what Dusty say. I mean,
11:06it don't, it don't, it don't, it doesn't jive, man. Don't compute, baby. Damn, boy.
