00:00Most of you have probably heard this before.
00:02But last year, the New York Jets, in 17 games, did not intercept one pass.
00:09That's not true.
00:10Think about that.
00:11One.
00:11How is that possible?
00:13One.
00:1468 quarters, they did not intercept one pass as a team.
00:20And Washington tried their best not to, but they accidentally did a few times.
00:24The Jets successfully never intercepted one pass.
00:29The ball is life.
00:30Again, Washington had eight.
00:32I don't remember eight.
00:34They picked off eight passes?
00:36Eight.
00:36You sure about that?
00:37Mike Stadler still had four by himself, I think.
00:39I guess.
00:40He made a couple plays on the goal line, I remember.
00:43But you know what I have noticed, if we want to go with a positive from the first few preseason
00:46games?
00:47And it's a result thing, not a process.
00:49The turnovers are there?
00:50They are generating some takeaways.
00:51Yes.
00:52They had the three picks of guys that won't be on the Miami Dolphins.
00:55I know it's backup quarterbacks, whatever, but they're making the plays.
00:58Yes.
00:58And then the second play with starters on the field, or as many of them as were healthy,
01:03against the Lions' second team or whatever that was.
01:05Yep.
01:05They get a sack fumble touchdown.
01:07So you're talking about two plays in your second preseason game.
01:10You've already got four takeaways.
01:11Yeah.
01:12You forced the interception on the next drive.
01:14Things are happening.
01:15The turnovers are there.
01:16Again, just have one leg to stand on.
01:18Do something.
01:19Instead of doing nothing.
01:20You gave up a lot of yards.
01:22You gave up a lot of points.
01:22And you didn't turn anybody over.
01:24Ladies and gentlemen, last year's Washington football team.
01:27Real quick before we move on from some news and notes from camp today.
01:30So you heard Will Harris is out.
01:32Safety position.
01:33Looks like we've now figured out who's going to be in, who's going to be out.
01:39I thought this was interesting.
01:41I wanted to play this clip.
01:42Dan Quinn's press conference before practice today.
01:45I have not for one second considered the possibility that Adafi Owe wouldn't play in the opener.
01:50Who's dealing with an injury and hasn't practiced in a couple of weeks.
01:53But it was kind of described as days, not weeks, with Adafi Owe.
01:58Similarly, when Trey Amos got hurt the first time, it was always so imminent that he was going to return
02:04that I haven't really properly calibrated that maybe he wouldn't be out there as their cornerback one against the Philadelphia
02:09Eagles.
02:11And today, in his press conference, John Kime asked Dan Quinn about those two guys and how sure Quinn is
02:18that they're going to be ready to start the season.
02:20And he was completely noncommittal in his answer.
02:24There's a couple reasons you would do that, but listen to the audio first.
02:27Yeah, I'd say I'll have a better answer for that into next week, John, as we get ready for those
02:32practices.
02:33We're fortunate that we have that space in between.
02:36They're both working hard and making progress, but I don't know if I'd have a number to gauge it just
02:41yet.
02:42And so that would be kind of my time that I'll have a better sense.
02:46That bothered me.
02:48And what I mean by that is, that was the first time that I've gotten nervous, like, wait a second.
02:53Is Adafi Owe maybe not going to play against the Eagles in his debut with the team after getting $100
02:57million?
02:58Wait a second.
02:59Is Trey Amos, who you're counting on as cornerback one, who's missed all of training camp,
03:03is this foot thing going to linger into September now?
03:07There's two possibilities here, and I want to see which one you kind of think this is.
03:11Number one is he could be in regular season injury update mode.
03:14I'm not going to tell you anything.
03:16And we know he is to some extent because he's not saying how much guys are going to play in
03:19preseason games.
03:20Kind of drags this out.
03:22Yeah, they're doing that, yeah.
03:22They're, like, pretending like they need to keep everything close to the vest.
03:25So it could be as simple as they know right now, Owe's going to practice middle of next week,
03:29but he's not willing to tell you yet.
03:31It's very possible, and I hope that's the case.
03:33The other one is it actually might be two, three weeks away, or let's say one and a half, two
03:40weeks away,
03:40which now puts you in jeopardy of missing week one.
03:43And I don't know which one it is, but both are on the table.
03:46What you could easily do if you know for a fact that Owe and Amos, from a timeline standpoint,
03:53are supposed to be back in time, two of your key starters, most important defensive starters,
03:56for the week one against the Eagles, you could just not make that a thing, not make that a story,
04:02and come out and say, yeah, those guys are totally expected to be ready for the start of the year.
04:07We've got a lot of time between now and then.
04:08Still got a few weeks.
04:09We'll get them up to speed.
04:10We're not worried about that.
04:12And that's no harm, no foul.
04:14Why wouldn't you do that?
04:15Unless you're not sure that they're moving about it.
04:17Unless it's dubious.
04:17Yeah, unless it's, ah, we'll know more later.
04:19Oh, no.
04:20So, again, it's not quite mid-teens nationals for me in terms of what they say about injuries.
04:27I just frankly don't believe and assume whatever the worst-case scenario is, I add a month to it.
04:31I mean, that's where they were at that point.
04:33The organization was doing a lot right.
04:35That was not one thing.
04:35The Nats you're talking about.
04:36The Nats.
04:37We're not quite there for this Local 53 just yet.
04:40But I'm now kind of starting to do that.
04:42I mean, guys have been day-to-day for the entirety of training camp, which I guess ended officially today.
04:47Right?
04:47There's a preseason game left.
04:49There's a joint practice left.
04:50But the active training camp today is over.
04:53And there are guys that were supposed to be here a million times over that just simply haven't been.
04:57Alec Grady practiced one time and had to go right back to the tent and hasn't been seen since.
05:01I mean, he's a ghost.
05:02A lot of these guys are.
05:03So, I kind of am defaulting towards either they don't know, which happens.
05:09Injuries can be flighty and kind of hard to predict in certain cases.
05:13Or they are now, as you said, kind of in full regular season mode where their near futures are dubious.
05:19I would always lean into, if I know a guy is going to be ready, especially in the preseason.
05:27It's not like you're giving away the answers in week four before a game.
05:31But this far out from the start of the year, I would just quell concerns, try to not make anything
05:36a story.
05:37And also with the injury stuff piling up around you right now, every answer is important because just the entire
05:44feel of it all right now.
05:45But the mojo is not great because you've got 20-plus guys that aren't going to be participating.
05:49It feels like a bit of a mudslide right now.
05:51You can put a stop to that.
05:52So, you can just say, no, no, no, no.
05:53Listen, guys.
05:53I know we got a lot of dudes banged up.
05:55It's affected our practice schedule.
05:57It affects what we're able to get done in Baltimore in the joint practice.
06:00Not ideal.
06:01No one's saying it is.
06:01But the only guys that are out for a really long time here are Laramie Tunsil and Johnny Newton.
06:07And otherwise, we got a pretty good beat on everything else and guys are going to be back really early
06:11into the season.
06:11Let's not make this a bigger deal than it is.
06:13And I would just pour the cold water on it, ALS Ice Bucket Challenge style.
06:17But Dan Quinn doesn't seem wanting to do that.
06:20And the question, I guess, is, is it more stylistically that he's just not going to give that information?
06:25Or might they not know or fear that it is possible that those guys are not back for the first
06:30week of the season?
06:31And I hadn't really considered that until today.
06:33So that, to me, was a bummer to not hear him come right out and go, yeah, always going to
06:37play in week one.
06:38Yeah, we think Amos is going to be back.
06:40They haven't really updated those guys.
06:41The other one we don't have a timeline on yet that now I'm interested in after what he said today
06:45was Bill.
06:46So I was at the practice Thursday before they flew to Detroit.
06:49Yep.
06:50And if you remember, I told you, I saw him come up lame.
06:52He kind of grabbed his leg.
06:53And I thought it was like quad hammy.
06:55I'm not a person that knows leg muscles.
06:57Maybe groin.
06:58But then he was like limping off the field a little bit.
07:01And it was obvious enough that I said there's no way he's going to play Saturday because you wouldn't push
07:04him for a preseason game that you don't care that much about.
07:07But I also don't know, is that going to feel better in three hours or is that a month?
07:11And we don't know yet.
07:12Right.
07:13But he said today, Quinn did, that Bill basically isn't doing anything this week.
07:17So that gets you through the Ravens practice tomorrow.
07:20No, Bill.
07:20That gets you through the preseason game Friday.
07:23He wouldn't be able to play in that.
07:24Right.
07:24And now you're done with all of the ramp up.
07:27And you got two weeks until the game.
07:28It's just the two weeks of game prep.
07:30And Bill is easing back in at that point.
07:33Rashad White's already been hurt.
07:34Hadn't really been doing a whole lot.
07:36Jeremy McNichols is hurt.
07:39That's another one that's very, you know, he's away.
07:41Yeah.
07:41That one at least they've said is weeks, not days.
07:44That's one of the only ones they've said that about, though.
07:46He's more in the Mariota.
07:46It's like the two guys that are out months.
07:49Then it's Mariota and McNichols are the weeks.
07:51And then everyone else we thought was days.
07:53But it's been a month.
07:54Owe kind of turned into that.
07:55Yeah.
07:57And who's the other guy with Owe we were talking about?
08:00Amos.
08:00Amos.
08:01Let's turn into that.
08:01It's a lot to keep straight, man.
08:03There's just a lot.
08:04For a team that decided, like, we're not going to push it that hard
08:07so that we can keep everybody healthy.
08:09They've got a lot of guys that aren't healthy.
08:10I know.
08:11And it's one of those, you know, you're damned if you do,
08:13damned if you don't kind of things where if you actually ramp up
08:18as hard maybe as you might need to, you might have more of these.
08:21You might have more of these kinds of stories.
08:23The flip side is they seem to be happening anyway without the ramping up.
08:26So I kind of don't, you know, there's no good answer here.
08:29To me, it seems like given the data we've got now, this is hindsight,
08:33I would have gone, you know what?
08:34But our guys, for whatever reason, are dropping like flies.
08:37We just, we have to get whoever's ready actually ready.
08:40So maybe let's go a little bit harder.
08:41But, again, I understand, like, where you're going, you know,
08:44we need all these guys to practice.
08:45We need the bodies.
08:46We need the reps.
08:47And we can't do it because we can't ramp up the intensity because guys,
08:51again, are getting hurt and missing not just days like we thought,
08:53but weeks because that's really what this is.
08:56If you tell me day-to-day, I expect day-to-day,
08:59and it hasn't been on a number of these guys.
09:01That's what's frustrating.
09:01Yeah, maybe that's why he doesn't want to give timetables at this point.
09:06You know, at the start of the conversation, I'm kind of giving him some guff
09:08because he's not telling you when guys come back, and you're going,
09:12well, if you tell me, you better tell me right.
09:13Maybe that's the problem.
09:14Maybe it's that.
09:14They've been wrong enough that he's like, all right, guys, I'm done with this.
09:17You know, I'm not going to be guessing anymore because it's made me look bad.
09:22What do we feel best and worst about with this roster?
09:25Let's get into that next, and we can open up the phones on this as well.
09:28You guys are starting to see the roster come into shape.
09:31You're seeing some of the injuries and clusters that they've had as well.
09:34We've seen what probably will be the last of the starters in the preseason.
09:38One more joint practice against the Ravens tomorrow.
09:41What area of this team do you feel best about, and what do you feel worst about?
09:46800-636-1067 is the number on Grant and Dana.
09:50It's kind.
09:50All right.
