00:41Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:43This morning, the United States and Iran can't even agree on whether they're negotiating,
00:48as Tehran sets out new demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
00:52President Trump told Axios on Sunday the U.S. is now low-keying talks with Iran,
00:58saying the two sides are only, quote, semi-negotiating.
01:02Iran says there are no formal talks, only messages being exchanged through intermediaries.
01:08And Tehran is now demanding the U.S. lift its naval blockade,
01:12withdraw forces from around Iran, lift sanctions, unfreeze Iranian assets,
01:17and pay damages from the war before the Strait fully reopens.
01:22Iran is also demanding a permanent end to the war against Iran and its allies.
01:27Vice President J.D. Vance, though, says talks are happening,
01:30and the immediate focus is getting more oil and gas through Hormuz.
01:34Yeah, where Iran is today, Kaylee, is that we're talking to the Iranians, of course.
01:40We're trying to maximize the amount of oil and gas that are coming out of the Strait of Hormuz.
01:44That's the thing that we're most focused on right now.
01:46And you see, I think, oil prices dipping around $80 a barrel today, sometimes a little bit lower.
01:51So we're just trying to make sure that we get what we need out of this particular conflict.
01:57Oil prices remain elevated with no deal yet to fully reopen the Strait.
02:01Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose to more than $84 per barrel,
02:06and the U.S. benchmark topped $78.
02:09And now another flashpoint, this one in the Red Sea.
02:12Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked the Yemeni port city of Mocha Sunday,
02:17killing at least seven people and injuring 30 others, according to Yemen's military.
02:22The attack used missiles and drones and hit both military and civilian sites.
02:27A new split this morning between President Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu over the future of Gaza.
02:33The Israeli prime minister is now rejecting a key part of Trump's peace plan,
02:38saying Israel is not leaving Gaza until Hamas fully disarms.
02:42Netanyahu told his cabinet Sunday that Israel will not accept Trump's 15-point roadmap as currently written.
02:50He says Hamas must give up its entire arsenal, not just its heavy weapons, before Israeli forces withdraw.
02:57That puts Netanyahu at odds with the plan Trump announced last month,
03:01and with Hamas, which says it remains committed to the agreement.
03:06Hamas says Israel must first withdraw and end hostilities,
03:09with further disarmament tied to the creation of a Palestinian state.
03:15Netanyahu says there will be no Palestinian state while he is prime minister.
03:19And Netanyahu's right-wing allies are pressing him not to budge.
03:23In a post on X, finance minister Bezal Smotrik says the Israeli military
03:29should not withdraw a single millimeter before Hamas disarms.
03:34Netanyahu faces elections in October.
03:37A boat captain is under arrest this morning after a mother and her five-month-old baby died
03:43when a boat overturned in New York Harbor over the weekend.
03:47Police were called to the overturned boat near Liberty Island just before 11 Saturday night.
03:52Twelve people had already been rescued by the time officers arrived.
03:56Police then pulled a 27-year-old woman and her five-month-old daughter from the water.
04:01Paramedics took both to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.
04:04The Coast Guard says the captain, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez,
04:08now faces 13 counts of reckless endangerment and is in federal custody.
04:13Authorities are also investigating whether the boat was being illegally operated as a charter.
04:18There were reportedly 14 passengers aboard the 22-foot boat when it began taking on water,
04:24not far from the Statue of Liberty.
04:27Politics now.
04:28Democrats spent much of last week asking what Abdul El-Sayed's win in Michigan says about the direction of the
04:35party.
04:35Now we're getting a look at what comes next.
04:38El-Sayed told NBC News Sunday that he spoke with former President Barack Obama last week,
04:44just days after the Democratic Socialists defeated the more moderate establishment-backed Democrat,
04:50Haley Stevens, in that Senate primary.
04:52Obama did not endorse either candidate in the primary,
04:56but El-Sayed says their conversation was about bringing Democrats back together for November.
05:02So I really enjoyed the conversation.
05:03I was grateful for his advice.
05:05It was very warm, very inviting.
05:07And I know that he knows the critical role that Michigan is going to play
05:11in holding Trump accountable, in winning back the Senate,
05:14and in building forward the future that we need.
05:17El-Sayed says he now hopes Obama will campaign with him in Michigan,
05:21where he faces Republican Mike Rogers in November.
05:24Tomorrow, Democrats could be having a very similar conversation in another battleground state.
05:30Wisconsin holds its Democratic primary for governor,
05:33and Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong goes into it as the frontrunner.
05:37She's built her campaign around affordability
05:40and an argument that Democratic voters want something different from the party establishment.
05:44But Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley,
05:47backed by outgoing Governor Tony Evers,
05:50is making the opposite case,
05:51that Hong could be too far left to win Wisconsin in November.
05:56Republican groups have even spent millions boosting Hong in the primary,
06:00believing she would be easier to beat.
06:03We are watching a huge wildfire battle across the West this morning,
06:07with dozens of large fires burning across the U.S.
06:10and more than 100 active fires in British Columbia, Canada, alone.
06:14In Washington state, crews are finally making progress around Spokane,
06:19after three fires damaged or destroyed about 920 structures.
06:23None of those fires was growing as of Sunday night,
06:26but some evacuation orders and warnings remain in place
06:29as crews work the containment lines.
06:31In Utah, the Wide Mouth 2 fire is now the largest in the state this year,
06:37burning more than 118,000 acres.
06:39This morning, an investigation is underway
06:41after two helicopter pilots were killed Friday while fighting that fire.
06:46The NTSB is now investigating the crash.
06:49Across the border in British Columbia,
06:51more than 20,000 people were forced from communities around Okanagan Lake over the weekend.
06:57About 8,000 evacuations took place around Peachland alone.
07:01British Columbia is now under a state of emergency,
07:03with hot, dry conditions keeping the fire danger high.
07:07Finally this morning, the WNBA has made plenty of headlines lately for what's happening off the court.
07:13But Sunday, Kayla McBride made sure basketball took center stage.
07:18The Minnesota Lynx guard hit 10 three-pointers, setting a new WNBA single-game record.
07:24McBride went 10 for 14 from beyond the arc and finished with 43 points,
07:29as Minnesota beat the Dallas Wings 103-90.
07:32And she did it in front of the home crowd in Minneapolis.
07:36The five-time All-Star left the floor with just over a minute to play
07:39and got a standing ovation as she headed to the bench.
