Hunting Trips That Turned Into Nightmares

In January 2013, in the Oise department of northern France, a group of hunters were out on a Sunday morning doing what French hunters do: tracking wild boar through the countryside. One of the hunters spotted a boar, raised his rifle, and fired.

The bullet hit the animal. But instead of penetrating, the bullet ricocheted off the boar’s thick hide or bone, deflected at an angle, and kept going. And going. And going. It traveled over a mile (about 2 kilometers). Through the air, across fields, over a road, and straight into the windshield of a passing car. The driver was killed instantly.

00:01The bullet that bounced off a boar.
00:03In January 2013, in the Waz Department of Northern France,
00:08a group of hunters were out on a Sunday morning doing what French hunters do,
00:12tracking wild boar through the countryside.
00:15One of the hunters spotted a boar, raised his rifle, and fired.
00:20The bullet hit the animal.
00:21But instead of penetrating, the bullet ricocheted off the boar's thick hide or bone,
00:27deflected at an angle, and kept going.
00:30And going.
00:31And going.
00:33It traveled over a mile.
00:36Through the air, across fields, over a road, and straight into the windshield of a passing car.
00:43The driver was killed instantly.
00:47I need you to sit with that for a second.
00:49A man woke up that Sunday morning, probably had his coffee, maybe kissed his wife goodbye,
00:55got in his car, and was killed by a bullet that bounced off a pig a mile away.
01:02What the hell, man?
01:04That's not how anyone expects to go.
01:07That's not even how a bad movie would write it.
01:10That's a glitch in the simulation.
01:12The hunter was investigated, but the whole thing was ruled a freak accident.
01:17Because what else do you call it?
01:19There's no law against shooting a boar and having the bullet go rogue.
01:23The bullet just decided it had other plans.
01:26French authorities confirmed the details, and the case made international headlines because,
01:31well, it's insane.
01:34Ballistics experts said that while ricochets are not uncommon,
01:37the distance this bullet traveled after bouncing off the boar was extraordinary.
01:42Normally, a ricocheted bullet loses most of its energy.
01:46This one didn't.
01:47It kept enough velocity to punch through a car windshield and kill a man.
01:52Some people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
01:56And this driver was in the wrongest place at the wrongest time in the history of wrong places and wrong
02:02times.
02:04It's a reminder that when you're dealing with firearms and wild animals,
02:08the laws of physics can do whatever they want.
02:10And sometimes, what they want is chaos.
02:15Killed by his own dog.
02:17On January 21, 2023, a 30-year-old plumber from Wichita, Kansas,
02:23named Joseph Austin Smith, went on a hunting trip with a buddy near Gouda Springs,
02:27about 45 miles south of Wichita.
02:30They loaded up the pickup truck with everything they needed.
02:33Hunting gear, rifles, snacks, and, of course, the dog.
02:38Because what's a hunting trip without a good dog?
02:41Joseph was sitting in the passenger seat.
02:43His friend was driving.
02:44In the back seat were the rifles and the dog.
02:47At around 9.40 in the morning, the dog got excited.
02:51Started moving around, pawing at things.
02:53And then it stepped on the trigger of the rifle.
02:56The gun went off.
02:58The bullet went straight through the back of the passenger seat and hit Joseph in the back.
03:02Just like that.
03:03He was killed right there, on a country road, in the passenger seat of his buddy's truck.
03:08Shot by his own dog.
03:11I know I shouldn't laugh, but come on.
03:14The dog shot him.
03:15The fucking dog.
03:17His loyal companion, his hunting partner, his best friend, shot him in the back.
03:22The Sumner County Sheriff's Office confirmed the story.
03:25No foul play.
03:26No criminal charges.
03:28Just a dog, a rifle, and the worst possible combination of paws and triggers.
03:34Joseph's family remembered him as a very funny, loving goofball.
03:39A GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral costs.
03:42You know what kills me about this story?
03:44It's the safety lesson.
03:46Every gun safety course in America teaches you,
03:48never leave a loaded weapon unattended,
03:51always engage the safety,
03:53and never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot.
03:56Nobody ever says,
03:58and keep the dog away from the trigger.
04:01Asher Watkins.
04:03Asher Watkins was a 52-year-old millionaire ranch realtor from Dallas, Texas.
04:08He'd made his fortune buying and selling ranches,
04:11and he spent his free time doing what a lot of wealthy Texans do,
04:14trophy hunting.
04:16In August 2025,
04:18he traveled to South Africa for a guided big-game safari
04:22organized by Konrad Vermach Safaris in the Bombisana Concession,
04:26a 50,000-acre hunting area in the Limpopo province.
04:30His target?
04:32A Cape buffalo.
04:33Now, the Cape buffalo is not your average animal.
04:37It's nicknamed Black Death.
04:39It's called the Mafia of the Bush.
04:42It weighs up to 2,000 pounds and can charge at 35 miles per hour.
04:47That's a small car running at you with horns.
04:51It's responsible for more hunter deaths in Africa than any other large animal.
04:56Professional hunters will tell you,
04:58if you shoot a Cape buffalo and don't kill it,
05:01it will come back for you.
05:02It remembers.
05:03It holds grudges.
05:05It's basically the John Wick of the animal kingdom.
05:09On August 3rd,
05:11Asher and his guides were on foot, stalking a large bull through dense bush veld.
05:15They got close.
05:17And then, without warning, the buffalo charged.
05:20It came out of the bush like a freight train.
05:24Before anyone could even blink, the 2,000-pound animal slammed into Asher and gored him with its massive, curved
05:31horns.
05:32He was hit in the abdomen and torso.
05:35By the time security personnel from the farm could alert the paramedics, Asher was already dead.
05:41The internet, as you can imagine, was not kind.
05:45Peter released a statement saying the buffalo did what any of us would do and made a desperate attempt at
05:51survival.
05:52Social media was full of people mourning the buffalo more than the millionaire.
05:57Earlier on the same trip, Asher had already killed a waterbuck.
06:01So the buffalo was essentially avenging its fallen colleague.
06:05The hunter became the hunted.
06:07And the hunted won.
06:09Decisively.
06:11Teen hunter mistakes his best friend for a deer.
06:15This one is just devastating.
06:18On December 2nd, 2016, in Charlotte County, Virginia, two teenage boys went out hunting together.
06:26They were best friends.
06:27A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old.
06:29Doing what boys in rural Virginia do on a Friday afternoon.
06:33Sitting in the woods with rifles, waiting for deer.
06:37It was late in the day.
06:39The light was fading.
06:40The shadows were getting longer.
06:43And that's when it happened.
06:45The 17-year-old saw movement in the trees.
06:48A shape.
06:49Something that, in the dim light, looked like a deer.
06:52He raised his rifle, aimed, and fired.
06:57It wasn't a deer.
06:58It was his best friend.
07:01The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
07:04The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries investigated and ruled it a tragic accident.
07:10A case of mistaken identity in the worst possible way.
07:14No charges were filed.
07:16Because it was an accident.
07:18A horrible, irreversible accident.
07:21But imagine being that 17-year-old.
07:24Imagine the moment you realize what you've done.
07:27Imagine living with that for the rest of your life.
07:30Every single day.
07:32Knowing that you killed your best friend because you didn't wait.
07:36Because you didn't look closely enough.
07:38Because the light was bad and you were too eager.
07:42This kind of thing happens more often than you'd think.
07:45Every hunting season, there are reports of hunters accidentally shooting other hunters, hikers, or bystanders.
07:51The rule is simple.
07:53You have to be 100% sure of your target before you pull the trigger.
07:59100%.
07:59Not 99.
08:01Not pretty sure.
08:03Because once that bullet leaves the barrel, you can't take it back.
08:07And in this case, a split-second decision destroyed two families.
08:11The one that lost a son and the one whose son has to live with what he did.
08:19Hari Krishnan.
08:20In June 2025, in the Velour district of Tamil Nadu, India,
08:25a middle-aged man named Hari Krishnan went hunting with a country-made gun.
08:31Now, a country-made gun in India is basically a homemade firearm.
08:37It's not a precision instrument.
08:39It's not a Remington.
08:40It's a pipe with a trigger mechanism that someone welded together in a shed.
08:45These things are wildly unpredictable.
08:48They misfire, they jam, and they don't exactly shoot straight.
08:52But they're cheap.
08:54And in rural India, they're common.
08:57Hari was near the village of Pernampet when he spotted an animal and fired.
09:02The bullet hit something hard.
09:04A rock, a tree trunk, nobody knows for sure, and ricocheted.
09:09It came straight back at him.
09:11The bullet struck Hari in the chest.
09:14He died from the wound.
09:16I mean, you shoot a gun and the bullet comes back and kills you?
09:21Are you serious?
09:22That's not a hunting accident.
09:24That's karma with a tracking device.
09:27That's the universe saying, return to sender.
09:30It's like throwing a boomerang,
09:32except the boomerang is a bullet and it doesn't care about your feelings.
09:36The case was reported by the Times of India and local media.
09:40Police investigated and confirmed it was an accidental death
09:44caused by a ricocheting bullet from a country-made firearm.
09:47No foul play.
09:49Just incredibly bad luck combined with an incredibly bad gun.
09:54It's a story that sounds like an urban legend, but it's real.
09:57And it's a reminder that if you're going to go hunting,
10:01maybe, just maybe, don't use a gun that was built in someone's garage.
10:06Just the thought.
10:07Shit.
10:09The deer that wouldn't die.
10:11This last one is a ghost story.
10:14A horror movie and a hunting trip all rolled into one.
10:18On October 22, 2019, a 66-year-old experienced hunter named Thomas Alexander
10:24was out in the woods near Yelville, Arkansas.
10:27Thomas had lived in Yelville for over 20 years.
10:30He was no amateur.
10:31He knew these woods.
10:33He knew how to hunt.
10:34He shot a deer.
10:36A clean shot.
10:37Or so he thought.
10:38He called his nephew and told him to come help field dress the animal.
10:42Then he walked up to the deer to inspect his kill.
10:45The deer wasn't dead.
10:47Huh?
10:48It was stunned.
10:49And when Thomas got close, it got up.
10:52And it attacked.
10:53The deer gored him repeatedly with its antlers, stabbing him with multiple puncture wounds
10:59across his body.
11:01When his nephew finally found him, Thomas was still alive.
11:05He was alert.
11:06He was talking.
11:07He even managed to call his wife on the phone.
11:10But by the time the paramedics arrived, he had stopped breathing.
11:14He died from the injuries.
11:17The deer came back from the dead and killed the man who shot it.
11:22That's not a hunting accident.
11:24That's a damn revenge movie.
11:26That's Bambi's dad finally snapping.
11:29The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said it was the first time they had ever seen a hunter
11:33die this way.
11:35They issued a reminder that hunters should wait 15 to 30 minutes before approaching a shot
11:39deer, just to make absolutely sure it's actually dead.
11:43Good advice.
11:45Wish Thomas had heard it.
11:46And the craziest part of this entire story?
11:49The wounded buck was never found.
11:52It just vanished back into the woods.
11:55Gone.
11:56Like a ghost.
11:58Probably out there right now telling all the other deer about the time it came back from
12:02the dead and took out a hunter with its bare antlers.
12:05A legend among deer.
12:28A legend among deer.
12:28A legend among deer.
12:28A legend among deer.
12:28A legend among deer.
