00:31Alright, very good morning everyone. Today we're going to be taking Thor's group out for an enrichment walk.
00:39One topic that you guys have been asking a lot about is splitting this group.
00:45There's six lines in the group. Two male, four females.
00:49And because of the fighting that does occur from time to time, there has been a few suggestions.
00:56Why don't you split the group Kev? So today's going to be a really interesting video.
01:02Notwithstanding the fact that I'm walking the six, Thor's six, and they always get up to some sort of mischief.

01:14This group is renowned for having these little squabbles.
01:19And now Charlie's picking on Nej. And now Thor is also.

02:04Wow, how mental.
02:06And you'll probably look at Thor's face, you'll see it's full of scars and marks and that's from him having
02:17little scraps with Charlie but also him having scraps with the lionesses and in particular Loli and Indi.
02:48Interesting behaviour that, Thor.
02:50And the reason for it is both Loli and Indi have had ovarectomies and the ovarectomy, in case you all
03:01are wondering, I know many who follow the channel will know.
03:06But for those of you who don't, basically an ovarectomy is a less invasive way of fixing the lioness.
03:15So you basically go in via a tiny little incision, it's a scope procedure and these little like snippers and
03:25the little snippers go in there and cut the ovary off and then they pull the ovary out via that
03:33tiny incision.
03:34And it's called an ovarectomy and you leave the uterus in situ but you take the ovaries out.
03:44Now the problem guys is if you leave any little itsy bitsy bit of ovary behind, as in the case
03:54of Indi and Loli,
03:57you get a situation where that tissue starts to emit hormones and even in some cases that tissue starts to
04:11differentiate into a testy or a gonad of a male.
04:20And that starts to emit testosterone and then the testosterone can get so much that the lionesses can grow manes
04:30and in one particular case we thought Meg was actually a Greg.
05:02That's amazing my girl.
05:05But Meg is a girl and Meg has always been a girl and actually what had happened is that there
05:12was some ovarian tissue left behind and that caused the transdifferentiation of the testes.
05:19So of the ovarian tissue into testes sorry forgive me.
05:23So we find ourselves in the situation and yet again it's a captive induced kind of problem because lions in
05:32the wild don't need this they should be breeding as lions do.
05:36And just to go on to okay so there's two parts to that now the first part is is well
05:44what do we do and the second part is is that the behavior that the lions are showing is completely
05:55normal.
05:55So in a wild pride a lioness Nege would come into oestrus and Thor would find her very interesting.
06:06The smell is irresistible and he cannot contain himself and he will do anything in his power to make sure
06:14that he is the one that mates with Nege and sires those young.
06:21And so that's what he will do he will he will covet her and he will shadow her and he
06:31will prevent her from going anywhere other than where he is.
06:35So when she is all nice and still and around him he will be a happy camper.
06:41When she moves off especially to go anywhere near Charlie the other male lion that's an absolute no no.
06:48So he will fight her all the way to try and keep himself between her and Charlie and if Charlie
06:55does get too close that could result in a fight.
06:58And that's what's been happening so we're having these false oestresses the pride thinks well Thor thinks that one of
07:07the the females is is an oestrus and so he does what a normal male lion would do.
07:12And when she Nege I'm talking about doesn't want to mate with him because it's actually not an oestrus and
07:20she's not feeling amorous at all.
07:22He fights with her as well because she's not complying.
07:28Just chill.

08:56It's a man-made problem and there's got to be a man made fix.
09:03Now that's where it gets very complicated because no matter what you do
09:08people are gonna have an opinion and so what I do is I trust the opinion of my
09:15doctor my vet I mean there's a reason he's been my vet since 2014 and I trust
09:22he knows the animals we know each other we know how each other thinks so yeah
09:30guess what I'm gonna take Doc Caldwell's opinion probably a hundred times out of
09:36a hundred times in the case of a lioness that's had an ovarectomy and is showing
09:42these symptoms these signs of of oestrus there's going to naturally be chaos in
09:49the pride okay so what is the next best solution it is to do a full spay guys and
09:56we've seen absolutely brilliant results with full spay Doc Caldwell is so good
10:04that his incision that he makes for a full spay is pretty much the almost the size
10:10of of those incisions that we made for the ovarectomies those scope incisions so
10:15it's really small and this beautiful girl here who actually had her ovary was
10:24not her ovary her her uterus was infected we did a full spay on her and she recovered
10:37absolutely like incredibly quickly so that is Jabari and Jabari has not ever come back into
10:45oestrus or shown any signs she lives in harmony the boys love her but not too much
10:50and it's all good so the reason for doing the spay on the female on Lola and on Indira is
11:01for that reason
11:01and I'll get to why we do not take we do not vasectomize the males in a pride like
11:09this and or costrate okay so let's get to that so if I costrated the males in this
11:16group so I'd have to costrate both costrating males means you remove the
11:22the testes there's no more some birds flying off there haha there's no more
11:30testosterone the main falls out the may the the the the the testosterone levels
11:35drop which is has health implications as well but then we have all sorts of other
11:40issues and yeah we got some big big female lions walking around and what
11:50happens is that the female still come into oestrus and even though the
11:56testosterone levels are suppressed the males still want to mate and therefore they fight
12:01but instead of having what we have now guys now what we have is a situation where these
12:07females are continually cycling in in what will be a real oestrus this is if we didn't
12:14touch the females initially if we left Indy and Lola as they are this situation is just going to get
12:24worse
12:24and worse and what we've seen in the past with other females is that it can get it
12:29can go it can go so awry that we will have just continuous fighting within the pride so
12:36what you're doing by costrating the males or and or vasectomizing because if you
12:41vasectomize the males they don't lose their manes so that's great but their
12:46hormone levels stay the same so you've actually got a more a bigger problem because
12:53the there's more testosterone and the males can become more aggro they're having a little tuff
13:03why don't I separate the pride everyone's saying to me oh my gosh this pride is just problematic
13:09they're always fighting no they're only fighting when we have that issue with oestrus so normally like
13:15today you see they're all getting along actually very very very well yeah they're playing and they're
13:21running around and having a jaw so guys the pride is not always fighting so splitting this pride will
13:29cause more chaos than good the whole point would be to make it a better situation and we know that
13:39it
13:39would not so we have in the past had situations where we needed to keep this pride separate from each
13:47other
13:48either to let an individual heal or or it just happened that way because maybe a group wouldn't move to
13:59the
14:00new area and so we have had that situation where we've had to just leave one group behind and
14:09they pine for each other guys
