00:28it
00:28you got that yes yes sorry to laugh at this during the break b's like oh we got lindsey coming
00:34up i
00:35gotta find a joke and he he was like trying different jokes with me tell her the other one
00:40that you like oh the other one was um what is the favorite what is the um favorite sport of
00:47insects
00:49of insects yeah i don't know i don't know this one is it i'm telling you we were workshopping this
00:57lindsey i love it i absolutely love it it's so funny um it's so funny because my kids are like
01:03oh mom stop i'm so annoying kids it's so good there's nothing parents can do the kids think
01:11is cool that's just kind of i like to laugh so i like to look at stuff like that um
01:16if you don't
01:17know what bmich is talking about you can follow lindsey on instagram at lindsey cz l-i-n-d-s
01:23-a-y-c-z
01:24and she posts these like kind of dad jokes parent jokes whatever you want to call them
01:29yeah in a very fun fashion um so let's talk let's talk your work stuff first and then we'll
01:36maybe we'll talk some some football as we're gearing up for the season um you you've teamed
01:41up with shaquille o'neal's uh production company yes to work on this game day murders um can you tell
01:49us a little bit more about it yes so it's on id which is on investigation discovery and it is
01:57it's
01:57called game day murders and it is the intersection of sports and true crime really sports and murder
02:04um so it's wild so here's how it started it was um they asked me a while back to be
02:10a part of a
02:11documentary that id was doing on aaron hernandez and partially because when i was at sports center
02:17you know we covered that a lot and so i was just i was a voice in this documentary and
02:22the process
02:22was really interesting to me it was something i had never done it was my part was sort of a
02:27role
02:28that i hadn't been in before you know because you're not you're sort of hosting but you're more
02:32just lending your voice so out of that um they said hey you know we we want to do more
02:38like this and
02:39we would love to work with you on a series and i really was like how are we going to
02:44find
02:44enough stories like this in different sports especially marquee sports that we haven't heard
02:50about you know um so but anyway long story short they're there and they um this is a series where
02:57it's six episodes and it is different stories about true crime that has occurred in sports you know
03:03these are all real stories they're all different sports and um it's just been a fascinating experience
03:08so we were we were embarking on that and then shack it was like hey shack's company he he loves
03:15this
03:15type of content they're interested in partnering to do this so it just organically kind of happened
03:20which was amazing because my reaction was like anything he does it's so great and he's so invested so
03:27it's been awesome and he's he is like full of ideas he is a true crime junkie for sure like
03:34no joke
03:35and he's all hours of the night he will send texts about like ideas and he's just really involved
03:42which is really really cool and it was for me you know i first met him when i was living
03:47in miami
03:47before i came to washington and he joined the miami heat and so you know i've covered him like
03:52obviously as an athlete which i've always been a fan of but to work with him in this way is
03:56really
03:57eye-opening you know well is that his uh because he's the honorary police or sheriff something like
04:04does that mindset go hand in hand with him loving this type of thing 100 100 i think and
04:10it's like to now me having worked with him a bit with this it's like what i observe and what
04:15i've
04:15realized is he is he sort of always is leaning into his curiosities you know and when it comes to
04:21that
04:21the work that he did with the sheriff's office he really really a is interested in true crime but
04:27also he has such a you know um a belief in justice and all that so it's like twofold you
04:34know and i
04:34think also with these stories like part of my role is connecting the dots for viewers on what is the
04:40culture like in that certain sport you know like what does it look like what is take us into what
04:46a
04:46locker room is like and camaraderie etc all that stuff and so he definitely i think is i think that
04:51really appeals to him also because obviously he has lived that um so yeah but he really like i have
04:58never seen someone take something that they're interested in in so many different ways in so
05:03many different fields and just like turn it into things like i was shopping for school supplies with
05:08my son at staples and i turn around and it's like a huge poster of shack talking about printers you
05:14know what i mean it's like everything he does but he has such a an awesome just approach to life
05:22and
05:22the cool thing i will say and then i'll shut up but like is you sort of get a glimpse
05:27working with him
05:28in this of what he must have been like as a teammate do you know what i mean just because
05:32he's super
05:33supportive he's super like cheerleader also like he'll just send a text and be like wow what an episode
05:39you know what i mean like so that's pretty cool you know be mitch like you know he keeps pushing
05:46it
05:46but like like the thing i like for me when i first heard game day murders i'm like whoa
05:52right the name makes you think like something happened on the day but like it's really about
05:56things just around sports though right right like it's not necessarily the actual game day however
06:03like one of the ones that i found most shocking was um this true crime scenario in the nhl and
06:09it
06:09was happening during the stanley cup playoffs so like that is crazy right so yeah and to be honest
06:15when i when we were first talking about this you know like sports is a place that we all go
06:19for
06:20like we live it because it's our job but you go for a release so at first i was like
06:25i don't know how
06:26this feels to be like talking about murder when you know sports makes you happy yeah um but it's
06:32really i think that these stories are fascinating and i think a lot of them speak to
06:37culture and also like a world that i'm not too far away from now with like kids in sports you
06:43know
06:43and like the level that you'll go to to give your kids every opportunity to be a star athlete and
06:49what
06:49happens when the other thing i found fascinating was like at the core of these crimes or murders and
06:56i'm this is not unlike dateline or something else that you watch it's like you realize that the little
07:01seed that turned into the thing that went way off the rails is an emotion that we can all relate
07:07to
07:08whether it's like you know drive or pride or like jealousy you know what i mean yeah so
07:16yeah well i i wanted to kind of specifically ask i i think the the episode on sean taylor is
07:24coming out
07:24this coming monday and folks can stream it on hbo max that's how i'm gonna watch it um and you
07:32know
07:32for you that know the sean taylor story and know the impact in this community and down in miami
07:39and know so many of of his former teammates and stuff what is this sean taylor episode gonna mean for
07:46folks i think that what i'm hoping people will take away from this because everyone knows you know
07:56most people know the story is more of context about who he was and like the teammate and also just
08:08the
08:08person in a sense that he was becoming or that you didn't see behind the scenes like that those are
08:14some stories that i have heard that i hadn't realized um i think you know you will hear from
08:19some people who we haven't heard from before including his mom and i think it's more of that
08:25it is in some senses it's more detail than or different detail than we've had in other stories
08:32meaning some recordings some you know 911 call type things so i think you know that is those are some
08:39of
08:39the things that i think will be new to people but overall it is you know it is the story
08:45but it is
08:46also with some context that because you guys know because you you were there obviously like this is
08:52also there were really strong feelings once this happened right and so i think not shying away from
08:59that but sort of digging into that is will be part of what people will get yeah yeah absolutely
09:04talking with our friend lindsey zarniak ahead of uh sean taylor episode of game day murders coming
09:10monday night at 10 10 p.m on id you can also stream it via hbo max you can give
09:16lindsey a follow
09:17at lindsey c z um lindsey i'm curious this time of year for for somebody like you that worked up
09:24close
09:24in football for so long now you know obviously things have transitioned like how do you get ready
09:31for football season are you like calling coaches reaching out like getting information or what do
09:36you do now i love that no okay well so i just started a gig with um cbs hq which
09:43i'm super excited
09:44about because it is yeah it's super fun and it's near it's not far from where i live but it
09:49is like
09:50you know they're streaming so it is 24 7 so when i do it i am the night side and
09:56so it's for me it's back
09:58to highlights and a lot of that which is a really fun muscle to flex when you haven't in a
10:04while like
10:04getting to jump into it in that regard so this is really the first time in a bit that i
10:10have been
10:11like okay here we go like now i've i've got to be up you know you i follow it like
10:15i have not
10:16stopped following it but it's like until you have a reason so now i'm just trying to consume everything
10:22that i can consume and i do love that about like just talking to people and being as close to
10:28the
10:28real stuff that's going on like that's the part of our type of job that i love and that i
10:34miss the
10:34most when it's not there do you know what i mean just the actual like i will tell you going
10:40from dc
10:41to espn i loved my time at espn the one thing that was instantly felt so different is you're not
10:48out
10:48at commanders like you know practice every day and so you are telling the stories and you're
10:55obviously talking to reporters but i really miss that part of it i love that part of it just like
11:00you know in the back in the day i didn't necessarily like in the moment love the grind of like
11:05okay you're
11:05out at redskins park and now you're coming back and you're doing the five six and eleven jp which by
11:10the way like is what you do right um and then you do 17 other jobs on top of it
11:14yes it does like
11:15but but that's the grind that i really miss is like i i found out quickly i'm like oh i
11:23don't like
11:24talking about this story when i could have gotten that information and i'm not you know like you're
11:29not hearing it for yourself so i think that's the craft right so i do love being able to do
11:33that as
11:33much as possible um but by the way i was just back in dc because i was there for the
11:37indycar race
11:38and i stopped by channel four and they were singing your praises and it was like they were rattling
11:44off all the different jobs that you do and i'm like he is an absolute beast like i don't know
11:49how
11:49you sleep or what else you know what i mean you'll really appreciate this he don't sleep the agent
11:59i've i've sleep agents but um i you'll appreciate this specifically and b knows this because we talked
12:05about it during the week for so the commanders are having a joint practice with the ravens today
12:10yeah and okay due to we'll call it scheduling conflicts we weren't able to go broadcast the
12:16radio show from there and because of the times of the practice like it just there was no way for
12:21me
12:21to be there and do this job which i have to do right so i'm going to be in studio
12:27all afternoon and i'll
12:28be you know throwing two highlights of practice and sound from practice and it's that is it's just
12:34that role for me is so unusual that like i'm wrapping my brain around it you know but i'm a
12:40i want to be there person like i want to right that's what i'm saying i want to have a
12:45conversation
12:45as a guy walks off that's not on camera you know what i mean it it is a different feeling
12:50it gives
12:50you a better feeling of what you're dealing with yeah totally and and then you can ask the questions
12:56and like you know i am but when when we were you know when mike was rattling off what you
13:02were doing
13:02i was like that is exactly what i knew i was like i know i know that that's how you're
13:06wired and i
13:07think it's awesome because i think this you know now it's like jobs are morphing in ways that people
13:13don't have to do that all the time and i think that it's um you know it's such a great
13:19foundation
13:19of just journalism but also just really being in the know and it's this cool combo of like beat
13:25reporting but also you know then you've got the platform to share it to that community or whatever
13:31you know the audience is so yeah i don't know i think you're a badass you're very kind um you're
13:37you're a great person to ask this and i think i think this is somewhere between much ado about
13:43nothing and maybe something to pay attention to but the commanders organizationally started selling
13:50three t-shirts in their pro shop if you will at the stadium you can get a daryl green shirt
13:55an art
13:55monk shirt or a sean taylor shirt and it has the old logo the redskins logo on there and it
14:01actually
14:02prints out you know washington redskins and then their historical accomplishments on the back wow wow
14:07now the team has been super clear we're not changing the name but they are re-embracing the past kind
14:14of
14:15what do you make of that as somebody that saw you know you grew up here and then you saw
14:19kind of the
14:20universe unfold over time i mean meaning the name like specifically them kind of rolling out some
14:28some skins merchandise at this point i mean it's tricky like i well i think that when you can
14:38celebrate the past i think that you should celebrate the past so i think that those players should be
14:43honored and i think that that makes sense in other teams you're going to go in a pro shop and
14:48see that
14:48you know they sell legendary jerseys if you know if you mean like it's just the controversy obviously
14:55surrounding that name i think that and look like it was it's dicey like it's sports center i had i
15:02had
15:02made the decision not to use it and it's every single time like we i say it or i'm describing
15:08something
15:08having to do with the commanders it's like you have to think about okay how am i you know like
15:13how am i
15:13referring to that so i understand the that is what the team was and so i think for myself i
15:22am grateful
15:23glad that they changed the name i think that if you're honoring the past they were what they were
15:30then and i don't think that it should i don't think that it should be a thing that is highly
15:36criticized
15:37yeah yeah i just think that if you try to i always show if you try to explain what went
15:43on then
15:43you can't talk about it like it's today i agree that's where people get confused that like
15:50if you mention something that happened in 1981 and 1986 or 1992 you can't throw the current name into
15:59it because it does not make sense to no one yeah and i think that two things can be okay
16:05and true i
16:05i think that it can be okay and accurate that we know that that is not an okay name to
16:10be using
16:11i think that we can be clear with that is not okay what we are doing is honoring the past
16:18and that is
16:19what that was and be much i agree with you like and that's what i'm talking about like i've been
16:23in
16:23settings especially recently talking about the sean taylor story of game day murders where it's like
16:28if i'm sharing a story about how i went out to commander's practice my initial reaction is wanting
16:35to say the park do you know what i'm saying and it's like so it is a it's a slippery
16:41slope and i
16:42hope that people have enough you know can understand that part of it that it's like you're honoring and
16:47it it does change it if you're changing up what it was when you're saying for sure time frame yeah
16:52the what actually matters on the field um how do you think the commanders will do this season
16:57i am i am i'm hopeful i am hopeful i am like i love the addition of stefan diggs yeah
17:05and i am
17:06really hoping that that you know i hope that jayden stays healthy um and i i am hopeful so at
17:14this
17:14moment i am feeling positive um until we see otherwise you know i do i worry about the offensive line
17:23and health and all that and so that's kind of where i am right now is i have i have
17:28hope because
17:29of what we saw two seasons ago and i am uh you know but i i understand why this is
17:35not people i'm
17:37sure have no it's uh they are really banged up right now but it's important to note they don't play
17:44a real game right now you know what i mean so we'll see what this looks like kind of two
17:48weeks from now
17:49uh we'll be watching though monday night definitely sean taylor uh game day murders episode on id or
