00:02Hi, I'm Antonia Blythe with Deadline, and we're here today at Netflix's Beef special event,
00:09Release Your Rage, Feel Your Calm, which is part of a week-long series of wellness events
00:14all across LA. And here with us today are Beef's creator, writer, and director Lee Sung-jin,
00:22and Charles Melton, who serves as an executive producer and stars as Austin in the show.
00:32What was it about, Charles, that you really wanted to convey in the character and blend in with Austin?
00:39I think we're just constantly looking for the Venn diagram of our shadows.
00:44We sort of call Beef a type of Carl Jungian shadow work, which is very appropriate for this room,
00:52soundbats and all that. I think through Austin, there's definitely someone that
00:58he's very people-pleasing. He has a heart of gold, he wants to do the right thing,
01:03but he's constantly putting other people before himself, almost to his own detriment a lot of times.
01:10And I think we wanted to craft an arc where, as an audience member, you're sort of like,
01:16oh, I hope this guy stands up for himself. I hope he does.
01:19But then when he finally does at the end, um, that choice hopefully feels devastating in a lot of ways.
01:26I would be frustrated with Sonny sometimes, but in like the best of ways, because
01:31Austin is so, it was such a vulnerable experience for me.
01:34You know, I always thought everyone was laughing at Austin.
01:36I still feel some type of worry about Austin and his, uh...
01:39Yeah, he was really locked in to the point where he would make crew break from laughing.
01:45And instead of being proud of that, he would get hurt, because he was really locked in as Austin,
01:52and he felt that, why are all the jokes at Austin's expense?
01:57But it was really interesting to see during the shoot where there was really no separation,
02:02and so any, any emotional wounds that Austin took on set, even after you yelled cut,
02:07like, Charles was absorbing that as well.
02:10Fantastic. Well, thank you, both of you,
02:13so much for being here and joining us for On The Go With Deadline.
02:17Congratulations.
