00:05It looks like the bad news for the Giants' pass game and receiving core has been confirmed.
00:11Slot wide receiver and return man Calvin Austin III has torn his ACL.
00:16So Adam Schefter confirmed it and tweeted it Wednesday morning,
00:19and this ends his season before it even started.
00:23I was right there at Tuesday's practice when his knee buckled during one-on-ones.
00:28He was making a routine break on his route.
00:32All he did was just plan it to make the cut at the top of his stem, and then he
00:36went down.
00:37The entire practice stopped. Players and coaches circled up.
00:42And even owner John Mara personally went over to check on him as he was carted off.
00:47The offense coordinator, Matt Nagy, didn't hide how much this stings to the offense.
00:52He called Austin an unbelievable kid and a great talent,
00:56and he admitted, quote, it would be a blow.
00:59But he also said that the standard under John Harbaugh is the next man up.
01:03Now the timing here is absolutely brutal.
01:06Austin signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal this offseason after four seasons in Pittsburgh,
01:12where he put up 89 catches for over 1,100 yards, nine touchdowns across his career there.
01:19And he was locked in as the Giants slot receiver,
01:23and he's even built a great chemistry with Jackson Dart throughout the course of the spring and summer practices.
01:29Braxton Berrios stepped in with the first-team offense in Austin's absence at practice in the slot.
01:36But we need to see who the Giants are going to put there for the long term.
01:40Now back to the next man up, because the injury now swings the door wide open for Odell Beckham Jr.
01:46He's been fighting for a roster spot all summer, mainly because he doesn't play special teams,
01:52and he's looked good throughout the course of training camp and the preseason.
01:55He showed off his burst in athleticism, but now with Austin done for the year,
02:01that roster math just changed in his favor heading into Final Cuts this weekend.
