Nepal flash floods leave 826 missing after glacial collapse

A devastating flash flood has struck Nepal’s northern border region near Rasuwa and Nuwakot, leaving at least 165 people dead and 826 missing, according to Nepal’s disaster authorities. More than 529 tourists are reportedly among those missing.

The disaster also affected Gyirong county in Tibet, where Chinese authorities reported 558 people missing and three deaths. It remains unclear whether some figures overlap across the border.

The US Geological Survey said the disaster was caused by a glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than the earthquake initially reported. The resulting torrent swept through communities, destroying roads, bridges, homes and power infrastructure along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi river systems.

Rescue efforts have been challenging because of heavy rain, damaged roads and difficult Himalayan terrain. Nepal has deployed around 2,000 military personnel, while helicopters are being used to reach isolated areas.

Among the missing are more than 100 Indian tourists, many travelling as part of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage toward Mount Kailash in Tibet. Authorities also warn that debris blocking waterways could trigger further flooding.
