00:03just off the coast of modern-day Germany researchers have found a truly ancient
00:07discovery this is what they say is a prehistoric man-made stone wall one dating back more than 10
00:13millennia it was discovered at a depth of around 69 feet but back when the structure was built it
00:18wasn't underwater at all the discovery was first made by geologist jacob gerson while conducting
00:24underwater surveys with his students he returned a year later to confirm his suspicions this time
00:29with research divers and prehistoric experts they used echo sounding to reconstruct the area during
00:35different periods finding that while the wall must be at least 8 500 years old as the area went
00:40underwater shortly after that time it's likely much older because of the wall's purpose experts
00:45believe that it was likely built to aid in the hunting of deer as herds of the animals will
00:49follow long-impeding structures those include the likes of rivers or natural rock faces but also
00:55includes man-made walls as well and since reindeer left the area and headed north upwards of 11 000
01:01years ago they believe it must have been built before that
