00:00We want to put money in your pocket and he is using his positionality to figure out how to
00:06empower those same corporations to fleece your pocket. We want Medicare for all and if he had
00:10his way he'd have Medicare for none. But there are two issues I want to bring up and I want
00:15to hide.
00:16Money out of? All of it. Money in your? All of it. Medicare for? All.
00:20Let's get louder. Money out of? All of it. Money in your? All of it. Medicare for? All.
00:25All right. Well, can we first give a huge round of applause to our two incredible women.
00:35Everybody here in Auburn knows that there's no A2 without D2. So she has been leading the fight for
00:45for years and years and I'm just really grateful to be so privileged for her mentorship and her
00:50leadership. And of course our incredible guest from the great state of Maryland, Jamie Raskin.
00:59I want to pick up on a couple of things that Congresswoman Dingell and Congressman Raskin
01:04mentioned. But before I do that, I just want to say hello to a couple of people here. I think
01:08uh, our future Regent, uh, for the University of Michigan, Amir Mack, ladies and gentlemen.
01:21And anybody here back to school for, for the fall?
01:25Welcome back.
01:32So look, we've got quite possibly the most important election of our lives here in Michigan ahead of us.
01:41All that we believe in, all that we hold dear is on the line. I don't have to tell you
01:45that.
01:46Now I'll be honest with you. It's a little bit crazy because you know, I never intended to run for
01:51office.
01:51So the fact that the president and the vice president decided to make me the main character
01:56of these midterms is a little bit odd to have to metabolize.
02:00But I also want to explain why they are so worried and why it's so important for us to win.
02:07I was not supposed to run for office, but I was definitely not supposed to win this primary.
02:12You're not supposed to be able to beat 70 million dollars of outside spending.
02:17You're not supposed to be able to talk about getting money out of politics and beat the big money.
02:25You're not supposed to be able to go anywhere and everywhere across the state,
02:29championing union rights and Medicare for all, and win in a competitive primary statewide in a
02:35state like Michigan. They tell us we're too purple. Except for I've never seen any purple.
02:40And if they are, you should probably give them a Heimlich maneuver because they're joking.
02:46There is not red or blue. There is not purple. There's not even progressive or liberal.
02:53There are people who are struggling with basic things. And the whole reason I ran for office is
02:59because I believe that public service is about trying to address those challenges, trying to take
03:06on the money in politics that keeps rigging our system to raise the price of everything from groceries,
03:14to gas, to rent, to a mortgage, and trying to keep you from seeing a doctor if you need one.
03:23That's what's at stake in this election. And I'm up against a guy who is truly the exact opposite of
03:30all
03:30of that. We want to get money out of politics. He's never seen a corporate dollar he didn't want to
03:34bring into politics. We want to put money in your pocket and he is using his positionality to figure
03:41out how to empower those same corporations to fleece your pocket. We want Medicare for all and
03:46if he had his way he'd have Medicare for none. But there are two issues I want to bring up
03:51and I want to
03:51highlight because they're so critical right now. Who here knows a Canadian? Canadians are the only
04:00people I know who will preemptively apologize for something they never did. I'm sorry.
04:10And so you got to be an asshole to pick a trade war with Canada. I'm so sorry. Like they're
04:15like the
04:15nicest people on earth. And this trade war isn't just a trade war. It is a trade war we pay
04:30for.
04:31The tariffs are already costing us about $3,200 a year here in Michigan. And that's before he just
04:39left the 50% tariff on Canadian goods. Now I want you to understand a little economics lesson because
04:43we are at the University of Michigan. Do you know how the tariff works? When you tariff another country
04:49what you're saying is your people have to pay that much more for the things that come from their country.
04:55So literally we are now going to have to pay 50% on top of the cost of the things
05:01that we get from Canada.
05:05And asking your people to pay for your vanity is not why anybody elected Donald Trump president. And
05:11what's worse is that Mike Rogers has never seen a Trump command. He did not want to Roger. And so
05:18whether it was trying to keep the Gordie Howe bridge shut down or it's signing on to these absurd tariffs,
05:25either way he is going to rubber stamp anything that Donald Trump tells him to do. When he was asked
05:31about the price of coffee, something a lot of people consume a lot of, I consume way too much of.
05:36His answer was like, oh, well, too bad. Price of coffee went up. Oh, too bad. His other excuse is
05:42that
05:42sometimes the shoe pinches sometimes. I'm like, first of all, get some new shoes.
05:49Second of all, what? $3,200 is not the shoe pinching. And then there's the issue of our
05:57democracy itself. And maybe I'm just sentimental about this because I know that but for the opportunity
06:02to be born and raised in this country, my family comes from a place where democracy doesn't work.
06:06Yeah. And democracy, we think, is bolted down with nuts and bolts. It's not. It's held together by
06:13norms and values. It's something that Congressman Raskin has been working on his entire life.
06:18And when you shake it vigorously enough, you really can break it. And that's exactly what
06:22they're trying to do. You know, Mike Rogers initially was on the right side of the big lie.
06:29Initially, he was willing to call out the fact that Donald Trump was just straight up lying about
06:34the 2020 election. But then he realized that maybe he wanted to run for US Senate in a state that's
06:40not
06:40his because he's from Florida and decided that the only way forward was to get Donald Trump's
06:46endorsement. All of a sudden, he became an election denier too, which tells you two things. Number one,
06:53it tells you that he is willing to lie to get the power. And number two, that he does not
07:00believe
07:01in democracy in the first place. And then there's the matter of the 2024 election, which is actually
07:07just quite hilarious because you all know the outcome of the 2024 election here in Michigan.
07:11We both elected Alyssa Slotkin and helped to elect Donald Trump in Michigan. You can move for that.
07:19But I want you to think about what that means then. This guy comes out of 2024 saying that actually
07:24the
07:24election was rigged against him. I'm like, so you, they rigged it against you, but not Donald Trump.
07:31That's what your argument is. He said, there's a big old van that delivered a bunch of votes in
07:36Detroit and that's the reason he lost. So y'all pulled a whole rig, but then Trump won and you
07:46lost.
07:48It doesn't make sense. So all of that is to say that if we're serious about our democracy,
07:54we cannot allow people who second guess the outcomes of democratic elections into public office.
07:59We cannot allow people who make up stories to make themselves feel better about their egos when they lose
08:09into places where they have power over our elections themselves. We have to demand
08:15that if you're going to participate in an election, that you abide by the outcome of that election.
08:20And we need to understand the ego of Donald Trump, whether he is picking a trade war with Canada
08:27or he's second guessing the outcomes of his own elections.
08:31So look, we have an alternative in this race.
08:35I didn't run for office for power. I didn't run for office because I thought it'd be fun. It's
08:40definitely not that. I ran for office because as a doctor, I kept realizing that too many people
08:45didn't get the health care that they needed when they needed it. And we had a responsibility to do
08:49better, which is why we are building a campaign to get money out of the power of finance and money
08:54in your pocket. That's Medicare for all.
