00:15So what happened today, grass reform, is widely regarded by the left and right
00:19as the most important food regulatory effort of the past 30 years.
00:22This is what everyone has been clamoring for.
00:25We got it done today.
00:26The real issue here is that the FDA commissioner, as we sit here today, does not know what's
00:31in our food.
00:31Most Americans, most moms would assume that the ingredients in our food have been subjected
00:36to safety studies.
00:37That is not true.
00:38For the past 40 years, the food industry has taken advantage of a loophole where they can
00:43generally recognize a food as safe, grass.
00:46And 95% of food ingredients now in our food supply have been self-identified as safe with
00:52no safety studies.
00:53Once you designate that loophole, you do not have to submit the ingredient or safety studies
00:56to the FDA.
00:57And that loophole use has led to the FDA not knowing what's in our food.
01:03It could be 2,000 ingredients.
01:04It could be 10,000.
01:05We don't know.
01:06There is not safety study in our food.
01:07So what this does today is it mandates that the food industry for new ingredients, radical
01:13concept, needs to notify the FDA.
01:15And the FDA will now be able to conduct safety studies on that food.
01:18Additionally, for the ingredients in our food supply, and we have 10,000 more ingredients
01:22than Europe in our food supply.
