Testing of the counterfeit weight loss peptide Retatrutide has shown consumers could be taking up to double the dose they think. The ABC teamed up with the University of Queensland to test some black market vials of the drug and found the concentration varied wildly. Retatrutide is still in clinical trials and not approved for human use.

00:02An analytical chemist quickly upskilling.
00:05This time last year I had never heard of peptides or never tested peptides.
00:09October 2025 we started getting almost daily requests for purity testing of peptides.
00:15The most common request is for black market knock-offs of weight loss peptide retitrutide.
00:21It's about 30% of all of the peptide testing that we do.
00:24The majority of vials tested don't contain the amount of peptide advertised on the label.
00:30There's a huge range, some containing none, some containing almost double and only one matching what the label says.
00:38The lab tested three vials of counterfeit retitrutide for the ABC and the University of Queensland.
00:44Each vial's label said the product contained 10mg of the peptide.
00:48The results showed one vial had about half that while the other two had a lot more.
00:56So between the three of them, huge variability.
00:59UQ peptide expert Tim Piakowski was surprised by the results.
01:03I definitely didn't expect that level of overdosing, that there'd be a greater number of overdosed vials than underdosed.
01:12If you're doing this yourself, without knowing the concentration and without medical supervision, there is a much higher risk of
01:19very dangerous potential side effects.
01:22Liver specialist Marie Sinclair has recently treated patients with liver failure after taking retitrutide.
01:28She's concerned there are also many other dangers that were not tested for.
01:32Unless you're specifically testing for every single potential contaminant, it's impossible to know for sure, safely, what is inside the
01:41vials that people are purchasing.
01:44Retitrutide is still in development by US pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly.
01:48It told the ABC any version of the drug available online is unapproved, unverified and simply not worth the risk.
01:56The Therapeutic Goods Administration continues to warn against the risks of unapproved peptides.
02:03Thank you very much.
