Senator Bernie Sanders launched a fierce attack on President Donald Trump, describing him as “mentally unstable” and accusing him of becoming increasingly out of control. Sanders also called Trump a “pathological liar” and authoritarian, alleging that he seeks greater personal power while disregarding the Constitution and rule of law. 00:00I don't have to tell anybody, but we are living in crazy times, and there is, unfortunately, a lot of
00:07very bad news out there.
00:09And I'm going to go over some of that bad news, but what I will be talking about in a
00:14minute, and I want everyone to appreciate it, is that there is a lot of very good news as well.
00:21And I'll get to that in a second.
00:23The bad news, in case you don't know, is that Donald Trump is President of the United States.
00:30And he is a president who is, in my view, mentally unstable and increasingly out of control.
00:39And what we are seeing is that the American people in poll after poll are really quite tired of a
00:47president who is a pathological liar,
00:49who is an authoritarian, who wants more and more power in his own hands as he ignores the Constitution and
00:57the rule of law.
00:58This guy is a narcissist who would like to name half of the buildings in America after him.
01:04He is a kleptocrat.
01:05His family, since he returned to the White House, is now over $2 billion richer.
01:11But, to be very honest with you, the bad news goes beyond Donald Trump.
01:18The reality is that today we are living in a society which has more income and wealth inequality than we
01:27have ever had in the history of the United States.
01:31It makes the Gilded Age of Rockefeller look like an egalitarian utopia.
01:37Today you've got the top 1% owning more wealth than the bottom 93%.
01:44And one man, Mr. Musk, our good friend, owns more wealth than the bottom half of the households in America.
01:51Meanwhile, while the very rich get richer, 60% of our people live paycheck to paycheck.
01:57We have the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on earth.
02:00And one out of three senior citizens is struggling economically.
02:06I don't have to tell anybody that we are living under a corrupt campaign finance system.
02:15Right now, you have billionaire-funded super PACs spending all kinds of money on elections,
02:21trying to elect candidates who represent the wealthy and powerful,
02:26defeat candidates who represent the working families of this country.
02:30We have a health care system, in case you hadn't noticed.
02:34Which is broken, it is dysfunctional, it is wildly expensive.
02:39By far, the most expensive health care system in the world.
02:43We are dealing right now with climate change.
02:47All that the scientists predicted for years happening right now.
02:51We're seeing uncontrolled forest fires, not only in the United States, Canada, around the world.
02:56We're seeing extreme weather disturbances.
02:59We're seeing drought.
03:01We're seeing flooding.
03:02We're seeing the reality that the last 11 years have been the warmest 11 years on record.
03:08So you've got climate change.
03:10And then guess what?
03:11You've got artificial intelligence, AI, which is a real threat to us in many, many ways,
03:19if we don't get our hands on it in an appropriate way and control it.
03:26And then, I don't have to tell anybody that we're in the midst of this terrible war in Iran.
03:31Thousands of people have been killed.
03:35So, that is the bad news, and it is pretty bad.
03:39But, here is the good news.
03:43And the good news is that the American people across the country, whether they're progressives, moderates, conservatives,
03:51they're beginning to catch on, that the economy is rigged, and that the campaign finance system is corrupt.
04:00And what we are seeing is that the winds of political revolution are blowing strong from California to New York
04:09and a lot of communities in between.
04:12Over the last year, it's important that everybody understand this,
04:16progressives have won major and often upset victories in New York City.
04:22Swearzran Mamdani is mayor.
04:26Members of Congress from New York City have also been elected.
04:30We've won victories in Arizona.
04:32Mayor's office in Washington, D.C.
04:35Mayor's office in Seattle, Washington.
04:37Congressional seats in New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Montana, Colorado, California, Wisconsin.
04:45We've won Senate primaries in Michigan and Minnesota.
04:50And, unbelievably, just last week, Angie Nixon won an incredible victory in Florida,
04:57taking on the entire Democratic establishment, being outspent 16 to 1.
05:03And, she won by a 12-point majority.
05:08So, what we are seeing is people are tired of status quo politics.
05:15They no longer trust the establishment.
05:17They are tired of status quo policies that they understand are working for the rich and the powerful, not for
05:24working families.
05:25And, progressives are winning elections for reasons that are not complicated.
05:32Unlike establishment candidates, progressives are actually talking about the real issues that working families are dealing with.
05:42And, more importantly, they are providing real solutions, which is what Americans want.
05:50The American people are saying, yeah, we get it.
05:52Trump is a disaster.
05:53That's fine.
05:54You can criticize them all you want.
05:56That's not going to provide health care to me.
05:57It's not going to raise my wages.
05:58What do you have to offer?
06:00And, progressives are stepping up to the plate and providing real solutions.
06:05I mean, in terms of income and wealth inequality.
06:08What progressives are saying, when the people on top, the billionaire class, has never, ever had it so good,
06:14we need to impose a wealth tax on billionaires that will raise enormous amounts of revenue that can improve life
06:22for working families throughout this country.
06:26Progressives are saying that we need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage, at least 20 bucks an
06:33hour, that we need to make it easier for workers to join unions so they can negotiate decent wages and
06:40benefits and working conditions.
06:42Progressives are saying that the current campaign finance system is broken and corrupt, and, yeah, of course, we've got to
06:50get rid of Citizens United, everyone says that, but what progressives are saying, we need to get super PACs out
06:57of democratic primaries.
06:59Primaries, billionaires, billionaires and their super PACs should not be able to buy primary victories.
07:07So, progressives are talking about that, and people are catching on, which is why, despite the fact that people like
07:13Angie Nixer-Routes spent 16 to 1, she won the election.
07:19Progressives also understand that the current healthcare system is broken, and that we need a new system, and that we
07:29have to understand, like every other major country on earth, that healthcare is a human right.
07:34And we cannot continue to be the only major country not to guarantee healthcare to all people, and almost without
07:43exception, every progressive candidate is fighting for a Medicare for all single-payer system, which will guarantee healthcare to all,
07:54which will expand Medicare to cover hearing, dental, and vision.
07:58So, addressing the healthcare crisis is something that progressives are talking about in a very significant way.
08:08Progressives understand that climate change is a threat, not only to America, but to the entire planet, and that we
08:18need to take on the fossil fuel industry and all their billions of dollars and their campaign contributions, transform our
08:26energy system away from fossil fuel.
08:28to energy efficiency and sustainable energy, and that when we do that, we can create millions of good-paying union
08:34jobs.
08:36And progressives also understand that AI and robotics, developed and pushed by the wealthiest people on earth, that these are
08:47the most transformational technologies in the history of humanity that can impact every man, woman, and child in our country.
08:54And if we don't aggressively intervene, these technologies will likely lead to the loss of many millions of jobs, they
09:04will eviscerate our privacy rights, undermine our democracy, and negatively impact the health and well-being of our kids.
09:11And by the way, by the way, if AI ever becomes independent of human control, and we have in the
09:19last month seen examples of that, it could threaten the very existence and well-being of humanity.
09:27And last but not least, progressives understand that our current foreign policy is a disaster, they understand going back to
09:37Vietnam, that war was based on a lie, the war in Iraq, based on a lie, the war in Iran
09:45that Trump launched with Netanyahu, based on a lie.
09:56And what progressives are almost totally united on is that we cannot continue to spend tens of billions of dollars
10:03funding the extremist Netanyahu government in Israel.
10:08So, the bottom line here is that we are in a really interesting and enormously important moment in modern American
10:18history.
10:19People are looking at the Democratic leadership, they're saying, sorry, we don't believe in you.
10:25Looking at Trump and the Republican leadership, they're saying, we don't believe in you.
10:31People are looking for change, they're looking for common sense.
10:36They're trying to understand what's going on in this country, and the solutions to the problems that we face.
10:45And that's why progressives are doing so well.
10:49And progressive candidates are doing well, not just because of their abilities, they're doing well because of you.
10:56All over this country, we have seen an unprecedented involvement in political campaigns.
11:05They got the money, we got the people.
11:07People are volunteering in a way that we have never seen before.
11:12We got an election coming up in a couple of months, certainly the most important election in midterm election in
11:21maybe forever.
11:24It's imperative that Democrats gain control over the House and the Senate.
11:28We put a check on Trump's disastrous policies.
11:32But that's not good enough.
11:34We've got to elect strong progressives, so we're going to stand up and make the fight for the working families
11:42of this country.
11:43And the fight to take on the oligarchs and create a government and an economy that work for all.
11:49So we've got an enormous amount of work to do in the next couple of months.
11:55And we have got to do it.
