00:51Let's begin with one of the deepest questions a human being can ever ask.
00:55Was I alive before I was alive?
00:57It's the kind of question that doesn't leave you once you start thinking about it.
01:01We spend so much of life wondering where we're going after death, but how often do we pause
01:07and ask, where was I before I was born?
01:10Now most of us assume life begins at birth.
01:13Maybe conception if you're thinking biologically.
01:15But the Bible invites us into a far older, deeper story.
01:19It reveals that before your body took shape in the womb, your soul was already known by God.
01:24Think about Jeremiah 1.5.
01:27It's one of the most breathtaking verses in all of scripture.
01:30God says, before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
01:34Before you were born, I set you apart.
01:37I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.
01:40Pause for a moment and let that sink in.
01:42Before Jeremiah had arms or legs, before his tiny heart started beating inside his mother,
01:48before his parents even dreamed of having a son, God said, I knew you.
01:54That means Jeremiah's life wasn't random.
01:56He wasn't just the product of DNA colliding in a biological accident.
02:01His soul, his purpose, his very existence had already been seen, chosen, and set apart by the creator of the
02:08universe.
02:09And here's the truth that hits even harder.
02:12This isn't just about Jeremiah.
02:14If God knew him before he was born, then surely the same applies to you.
02:19You weren't an accident.
02:21You weren't invisible before the womb.
02:23You were already known.
02:25Now think about this.
02:26When God says, before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
02:31He's not just talking about recognition.
02:33Like someone saying, oh yes, I've heard of you.
02:35The Hebrew word used here for new is yada, a word that means intimate knowledge, deep, relational, personal understanding.
02:44So when God says he knew you, it means he knew your fears, your strengths, your gifts, your future, your
02:52weaknesses, and the calling he planted in your soul.
02:55He knew the shape of your laughter.
02:58He knew the tears you would cry.
03:00He knew the scars you would carry.
03:02He knew the battles you would fight before your mother even whispered your name.
03:07God already called you by his.
03:09And it doesn't stop with Jeremiah.
03:11The apostle Paul expands this truth in Ephesians 1, 4.
03:15For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
03:21Did you catch that?
03:22Before the creation of the world.
03:24Think about that timeline for a second.
03:26Before mountains rose from the deep.
03:28Before oceans stretched across the earth.
03:31Before galaxies spun into motion.
03:34Before a single star lit up the heavens.
03:36God already saw you.
03:38That means your soul is not an afterthought.
03:41Your existence is not plan B.
03:43You were chosen.
03:45You were envisioned.
03:46You were loved before there was even a universe to place you in.
03:49Imagine that.
03:50Before God said, let there be light.
03:53He had already seen the light that would one day shine through your soul.
03:56Now here's where it gets personal.
03:58If God knew you before time itself.
04:01Then it raises a haunting, beautiful question.
04:04Why you?
04:05Why did God choose you, your soul, to be born in this time?
04:10In this generation?
04:11In this family?
04:13In this century?
04:14Why not a hundred years ago?
04:16Why not 500 years in the future?
04:19Why here?
04:20Why now?
04:21You see, God's knowledge of you before the womb wasn't passive.
04:25It wasn't him casually knowing you existed.
04:27It was intentional.
04:29It was purposeful.
04:30It was active.
04:31He didn't just see your soul.
04:33He placed it in this very moment of history.
04:36Because he knew this was your appointed time.
04:39That's why Acts 17.26 says,
04:42From one man he made all the nations.
04:43That they should inhabit the whole earth.
04:46And he marked out their appointed times in history.
04:49And the boundaries of their lands.
04:50Do you hear that?
04:51God marked out your appointed time.
04:53He decided where and when you would live.
04:56He placed your soul in this generation.
04:58You weren't late.
05:00You weren't early.
05:01You were right on time.
05:03Now let's wrestle with this together.
05:05If God knew you before you were born.
05:07If he chose you before the foundations of the world.
05:10And if he appointed your exact time in history.
05:12Then doesn't that mean your life has divine weight?
05:16Doesn't it mean that your struggles.
05:18As painful as they are.
05:19Have a purpose.
05:20That your gifts are not random.
05:22That even your failures are known.
05:24And somehow woven into the plan.
05:26I want you to stop and ask yourself right now.
05:30What would change in my life.
05:32If I truly believed that my soul was known before time began.
05:35Would you still feel like you're just drifting through life unnoticed?
05:39Would you still compare yourself to others wondering if you matter?
05:43Would you still doubt that God has a plan for you?
05:46Because the truth is.
05:47He didn't just know you before you were born.
05:50He set you apart.
05:51He marked you.
05:52He called you.
05:53He planted eternity in your very being.
05:56Let's go even deeper.
05:58Ecclesiastes 3.11 says.
06:00He has made everything beautiful in its time.
06:03He has also set eternity in the human heart.
06:06Yet no one can fathom what God has done.
06:08From beginning to end.
06:10Do you realize what that means?
06:12It means the very reason you wonder about these questions.
06:16The reason you feel the pull of eternity.
06:18The ache for meaning.
06:20The longing for something beyond this life.
06:22Is because God himself placed eternity inside you.
06:26That hunger you feel for something more.
06:29That restlessness.
06:30That nothing in this world seems to satisfy.
06:33That's the echo of where your soul truly came from.
06:37Your soul remembers.
06:38Even if faintly.
06:40That it was known.
06:41Loved.
06:42And purposed before the womb.
06:44And maybe right now you're thinking.
06:46But if God knew me before I was born.
06:48If he chose me and set me apart.
06:51Then why do I feel so lost?
06:53Why do I feel like my life has gone off course?
06:56Why do I feel like I've disappointed him?
06:59Or that I'll never measure up to the calling he had for me?
07:02Friend, let me encourage you.
07:04God's knowledge of you includes all of it.
07:06He saw the mistakes before you made them.
07:08He saw the detours before you took them.
07:11He saw the sins before you fell into them.
07:13And yet he still chose you.
07:15Do you know what that means?
07:17It means your failures don't disqualify you from the purpose he had for you before the world began.
07:22Because he already factored them into the plan.
07:25You are not stronger than his sovereignty.
07:27So let's circle back.
07:29The question was, were you alive before you were alive?
07:32The answer is this.
07:34You weren't walking around as a ghostly soul before birth.
07:37You weren't in some waiting room of heaven watching earth from a distance.
07:41But in the eternal mind of God, your soul was already alive.
07:45Already seen.
07:46Already loved.
07:47Already chosen.
07:48And that reality changes everything about how you see yourself today.
07:53Because if God knew you before time, then today, right now, you can trust that he hasn't forgotten you in
08:00time.
08:00If he knew you before your first breath, then surely he won't abandon you before your last.
08:05And if he called you before the foundations of the world, then your life has meaning that stretches far beyond
08:12what you see in front of you.
08:14So let me ask you one more question before we move on.
08:34Let's take the next step in this journey.
08:36If chapter one revealed that your soul was known before you were born, then chapter two asks a deeper, almost
08:42overwhelming question.
08:43Why?
08:44Why did God know you?
08:46Why did he choose you?
08:48Why did he place your soul in this exact moment of history?
08:52Because it's not enough to know that you were seen.
08:54The heart longs to know.
08:56What was I seen for?
08:58What was the purpose?
09:00Ephesians 1, 4 to 5 gives us a glimpse into this mystery.
09:03For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
09:09In love, he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will.
09:16Notice the sequence.
09:18Before creation, before Genesis 1, 1, before light, before stars, God already had a blueprint for your soul.
09:26And what does Paul say that blueprint included?
09:29Two things.
09:30That you would be holy and blameless in his sight.
09:33That you would be adopted as his child through Christ.
09:37Pause on that.
09:38Your soul story didn't begin with sin.
09:41It didn't begin with brokenness.
09:43It didn't begin with the mess of your life.
09:45It began with a vision, God's vision, that your soul would belong to him.
09:51That you would be part of his family.
09:53That your existence itself would be a testimony of his love.
09:56So when we talk about your pre-existence, we're not just talking about you floating somewhere.
10:02We're talking about the fact that in the eternal plan of God, your soul already had a place, already had
10:08a purpose, already had a destiny written down.
10:11This brings us to another incredible thought.
10:14The Bible speaks of a book of life.
10:16Revelation 13, 8 calls it the book of life belonging to the Lamb who was slain from the creation of
10:23the world.
10:24Did you hear that?
10:25The Lamb, Jesus, was slain from the creation of the world.
10:29That means the plan of salvation, the cross itself, wasn't a last minute fix.
10:35It was written into the eternal plan before the world even began.
10:38And in that same eternal plan, your name, your soul, was written in the book of life.
10:45So before you were born, before your parents met, before time itself ticked its first second, God already knew the
10:52story of your salvation.
10:53He already saw the cross, and he already saw your redemption through it.
10:58That means your soul was not an orphan wandering in nothingness before you were born.
11:03Your soul was part of God's family plan from eternity.
11:06Now let's step back and see the bigger picture.
11:09When we say your soul existed in God's eternal plan, we're saying that your life is part of something cosmic,
11:16something eternal, something far beyond just you.
11:20Psalm 139 and verse 16 says,
11:23Your eyes saw my unformed body.
11:25All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
11:30All your days were written before you lived a single one.
11:32That means every detail of your journey, your joys, your heartbreaks, the things you'd learn, the people you'd meet was
11:39already seen.
11:40And yet God still said, yes, I want this soul.
11:44I want this life.
11:45I want this story to exist.
11:47So here's a question that should stop us in our tracks.
11:50If God saw all your days before they began, including the mistakes, the failures, the moments you'd run from him,
11:58and he still chose to breathe life into you,
12:01Doesn't that mean your worth was never based on perfection?
12:04Your worth was never based on performance.
12:07It was always based on his eternal choice.
12:10Let's get a little imaginative for a moment.
12:12Picture God in eternity before the world began.
12:16The angels are silent.
12:18Creation hasn't yet unfolded.
12:20And in the heart of God, there's a conversation.
12:22He says, I will create a soul, and I will call them by name.
12:27They will laugh.
12:28They will cry.
12:29They will stumble.
12:30But they will walk with me.
12:32And through their life, my glory will be seen.
12:35And in that moment, your story began.
12:38Not on earth, but in eternity.
12:41Now let's bring this from the heavens down to your everyday life.
12:45If your soul was already part of God's eternal plan, then what does that mean for the struggles you're facing
12:51right now?
12:51It means this.
12:53Nothing is wasted.
12:54Not the pain.
12:56Not the heartbreak.
12:57Not even the seasons where you feel far from God.
13:00Because if he knew all your days before you live them, then even your wilderness seasons are part of the
13:05map.
13:06Romans 8, 29 to 30 puts it this way.
13:08For those God foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be
13:15the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
13:17And those he predestined, he also called.
13:20Those he called, he also justified.
13:23Those he justified, he also glorified.
13:25Did you catch that chain?
13:29Foreknew, predestined, called, justified, glorified.
13:33Your soul's journey was already seen, already secured, already destined for glory.
13:39So even when you feel lost, heaven is not lost on you.
13:43Now let me ask you a question to reflect on.
13:45Friend, if God has already woven your soul into his eternal plan, if he's already written your name in the
13:51book of life, if he's already seen every day of your life before one came to pass, what are you
13:58afraid of?
13:59Are you afraid that your mistakes will disqualify you?
14:02Are you afraid that your weakness makes you unusable?
14:05Are you afraid that somehow you'll fall outside of his plan?
14:09Friend, how could you fall outside of a plan that was written before the world began?
14:13You are held in an eternal story that started long before you and will continue long after you.
14:20And this brings us to a powerful shift.
14:22If your soul is part of God's eternal plan, then you can no longer live with small eyes.
14:28You can't live like life is random, like today doesn't matter, like your decisions don't ripple through eternity.
14:35You must live with eternal eyes.
14:38Every conversation, every act of kindness, every step of obedience, every prayer whispered in the dark, it all ties back
14:46into the eternal plan that God set in motion before time.
14:50Your soul is not just surviving this world.
14:53Your soul is fulfilling an eternal design.
14:56Your soul was chosen in Christ before creation.
15:01Your name was written in the book of life before time began.
15:05All your days were already written in his book.
15:08Your struggles, your victories, your journey are part of his eternal plan.
15:13And nothing, absolutely nothing can erase the purpose he placed in you.
15:17You are not an accident.
15:19You are not forgotten.
15:20You are not random.
15:21You are part of something eternal, cosmic, breathtaking.
15:26So let me leave you with a question to hold on to until the next chapter.
15:30If your soul has always been part of God's eternal plan, then what would it look like if you started
15:36living not for survival, but for eternity?
15:40We've seen so far that your soul was known before birth and that it was already written into God's eternal
15:46plan.
15:47But now we need to wrestle with something even more intimate, even more breathtaking.
15:51What was your soul's relationship with God before you were born?
15:55Because if he knew you, if he chose you, if he wrote your name in the book of life before
16:00time began,
16:02then the next question is, where were you in relation to him?
16:06Were you distant?
16:08Were you near?
16:09Were you already in his heart in ways we can barely understand?
16:13The clearest voice we have on this mystery is none other than Jesus himself.
16:18In John 17, 5, as he prays before his arrest, Jesus says,
16:23And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
16:29Now, of course, Jesus is eternal in a way we are not.
16:32He is God the Son.
16:34He didn't begin.
16:35He always was.
16:36But this verse opens a door.
16:38It shows us that existence with the Father before birth is not foreign to the story of God.
16:44And then Jesus says something astonishing later in the same prayer.
16:47In John 17, 22 to 23, he says,
16:51I have given them the glory that you gave me,
16:53that they may be one as we are one, I in them and you in me,
16:57so that they may be brought to complete unity.
17:00Do you see the connection?
17:02Jesus is not just saying,
17:04I was with the Father before the world began.
17:07He's saying,
17:07The same glory I shared with the Father, I am giving to you.
17:11That means your soul is not just a random creation thrown into history.
17:15It means your soul was created for intimacy with God,
17:19a closeness, a relationship that ties all the way back into the eternal love of Father, Son, and Spirit.
17:26Let's go back even further to Genesis 2, 7.
17:58Now pause and think about this.
18:00If God was that intimately involved with Adam,
18:03breathing his very breath into him,
18:06what does that say about your soul?
18:08It means your soul carries divine imprint.
18:11Your soul, before it was clothed in flesh,
18:13was God-breathed, God-intended, God-purposed.
18:17You were not far from him.
18:19You began with him.
18:21Ecclesiastes 12, 7 says something fascinating about death.
18:24And the dust returns to the ground it came from,
18:27and the Spirit returns to God who gave it.
18:30Notice the direction of movement.
18:31The body goes back to dust,
18:33but the Spirit, your soul, returns to God.
18:37Now think carefully.
18:38How can something return to God unless it first came from him?
18:42Your soul was not created apart from him and then handed off like a tool.
18:47Your soul originated in his presence, in his intention, in his hands.
18:52That's why when life ends, the soul doesn't disappear.
18:56It goes back to the one it came from.
18:59So if your soul returns to God, it must have first been of God,
19:04born of his breath, rooted in his being.
19:08Psalm 139 gives us another glimpse into this.
19:11David says in verses 13 to 16,
19:14For you created my inmost being.
19:16You knit me together in my mother's womb.
19:18I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
19:22My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,
19:26when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
19:29Your eyes saw my unformed body.
19:31All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
19:36Notice that phrase, you created my inmost being.
19:39The inmost being, that's the soul.
19:42The eternal, unseen part of you.
19:44The you beneath the skin.
19:46And David says, you made that.
19:48You fashioned that.
19:50You saw me before my body even existed.
19:53This means your relationship with God doesn't begin at your first prayer
19:56or your first church service.
19:59or your first conscious thought of him.
20:01It began before you even entered the womb.
20:04He was already loving you, already shaping your soul,
20:08already whispering destiny over you before you even had a heartbeat.
20:12There's another moment in the gospels that makes sense in this light.
20:15In Matthew 19, 14, Jesus says,
20:18Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them,
20:22for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.
20:25Why would the kingdom belong to children?
20:27Because they are closest to the origin of their souls.
20:30They carry the freshness of heaven's touch.
20:33They haven't yet hardened their hearts with pride and self-reliance.
20:36In their innocence, they reflect something of that pre-birth closeness with God.
20:40It's as though Jesus is saying,
20:43These little ones remind you of where you came from.
20:46Don't push them away.
20:48They are living signs that the soul has always been connected to the Father.
20:52Here's something profound to consider.
20:54Why is it that all cultures across all of history have wrestled with the idea of the soul?
21:00Why does every human heart, in some way, feel a pull toward eternity?
21:06Ecclesiastes 3.11 told us already,
21:08God has set eternity in our hearts.
21:11That means deep inside, your soul remembers.
21:14It may not remember images or places.
21:17But it remembers God.
21:19It remembers being known.
21:21It remembers that it didn't start here, and it won't end here.
21:25That's why nothing on earth fully satisfies.
21:27Not money, not fame, not relationships, not achievements.
21:32Because your soul is not from here.
21:34It's from Him, and it longs to return.
21:37Now let's step back and piece it together.
21:40Your soul was breathed out by God, the divine spark of life.
21:45Your soul was seen in love before the womb.
21:48Your soul was woven with intention, destiny, and calling.
21:52And when your life here ends, your soul will return to the one who gave it.
21:57That means this entire earthly journey is bookended by God's presence.
22:01You began with Him.
22:02You will end with Him.
22:04And in between, your soul is learning to walk with Him.
22:07So here's the question I want you to sit with.
22:10If your soul began in God, and if your soul will return to God,
22:14then why do we live so often as if this world is all there is?
22:17Why do we chase temporary things?
22:19Why do we measure our worth by careers, possessions, or the opinions of others?
22:25When the truth is, our soul is eternal, our soul came from God, and our soul is headed back to
22:31Him.
22:32If your soul's first relationship was with the Father,
22:35then doesn't it make sense that the only way to live fully is to remain close to Him?
22:40Doesn't it mean that sin isn't just breaking rules?
22:43It's forgetting where you came from?
22:46And salvation isn't just forgiveness.
22:48It's being reconnected to the one you belong to from the very beginning.
22:53We've already walked through two breathtaking truths,
22:55that God knew you before you were formed,
22:58and that your soul was written into His eternal plan.
23:01Then we saw that your soul began in God's presence and will return there.
23:06Now we come to the hard, raw, unbearably honest part of the story.
23:11Once your soul enters time and flesh, it steps into a battlefield.
23:15The world, the flesh, and even spiritual forces work to make you forget who you were before the womb.
23:21They whisper lies, dim your memory of heaven,
23:24and try to convince you that your origin doesn't matter.
23:27Chapter 4 is about that conflict.
23:29The daily, subtle, and sometimes violent struggle between your eternal identity
23:34and the many things that try to pull you back into forgetfulness.
23:38Scripture never paints the Christian life as a gentle stroll in a meadow.
23:42It frames it as a march, a race, a battle.
23:46Paul tells us plainly,
23:48For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
23:51but against the rulers, against the authorities,
23:54against the cosmic powers of this present darkness.
23:57Ephesians 6.12
23:58That verse right there refuses to sentimentalize our experience.
24:03The enemy is not only a list of bad habits or wrong choices.
24:07There are real spiritual forces and powerful cultural currents
24:11aligned against the memory of who you were before you were born.
24:14And yet, the more I read the Bible,
24:17the more I see how often the fight happens in ordinary places,
24:20at the kitchen table,
24:22in the mind at 3 a.m.,
24:24in the daily decisions we think are small.
24:27The battlefield is not always dramatic.
24:29It's quiet, insidious, and dressed up as normal life.
24:33If you are listening right now and your memory of heaven feels dim,
24:37maybe because of addiction, grief, shame, or exhaustion,
24:42hear this plainly.
24:43Your forgetfulness is not final.
24:46The Bible's pattern is not,
24:48you fall and stay fallen.
24:50It's you fall, you return, you are restored.
24:54The father runs to the prodigal.
24:56He tenderly covers wounds and speaks your true name.
25:00Scripture teaches that God's grace meets us in our weakness
25:03and that our failures become the soil for deeper dependence.
25:07Romans 8.38-39 is a promise restated over and over
25:11in different words throughout Scripture.
25:13Nothing can separate you from God's love.
25:16That does not wipe away consequences,
25:18but it does promise restoration and a re-anchoring of identity.
25:23The world will try to define you by what you own,
25:26what you perform, and what you look like.
25:29The flesh will urge immediate relief and self-focus.
25:32The enemy will whisper lies of worthlessness and fear,
25:35but the soul remembers, or can be taught again to remember,
25:40that it came from God, was written into his plan,
25:43and will return to him.
25:45So what do you do now?
25:47Recognize the front lines.
25:49Be aware where you are being seduced or accused.
25:51Choose practices that bring memory.
25:55Scripture, worship, community, confession.
25:59Rehearse the truth daily.
26:01You were known before the womb.
26:03Let that truth change your small choices.
26:06When you fail, return.
26:08Make a practice of repentance that's short,
26:12honest, and quick to seek restoration.
26:14And one last honest question to carry with you.
26:17Which small rhythm will you start today to remind your soul of its origin?
26:21Will it be a verse, a song, a circle of friends, a morning prayer?
26:27Choose one and begin.
26:28Amen.
