Transcript
00:00Grab your scrunchies and rewind the VCR
00:02because we're taking it back to the 80s
00:04to revisit and recreate the snacks
00:06that made my childhood taste so great.
00:08I'm starting with a freezer classic
00:09and I'm giving it a little upgrade.
00:11The old pizza rolls.
00:13Instead of popping them in the microwave
00:15or the oven like we used to do back then,
00:17we're gonna air fry these and toss them in a garlic butter.
00:21Giving them a little adult twist.
00:23They're gonna go for about five minutes,
00:24give them a toss and go another five minutes.
00:26And while that happens, we're gonna make the liquid gold
00:28that takes these to a whole other level.
00:30I'm just gonna melt some butter in a skillet.
00:32You could also do this in the microwave.
00:33So while the butter is melting,
00:34I'm gonna go in with fresh garlic.
00:36That way as it's melting,
00:38it is slowly infusing with the garlic flavor.
00:41You don't really want the garlic to brown or anything.
00:44Once it starts kind of simmering,
00:45let it go about a minute or two.
00:47We're gonna pour this over those pizza rolls
00:50and give them a toss.
00:53When they start to ooze, that's when they're ready.
00:56I'm gonna pour the butter over and give them a toss.
00:59I know, as if they weren't already indulgent.
01:02And we're not even done.
01:04Toss them with some grated parm too.
01:07See, we've really just upgraded these.
01:08You were still a baby when these came out.
01:11True.
01:12A little sprinkle of parm and a little fresh parsley.
01:16You know, it's gonna be so hot inside.
01:19That was the one thing about these.
01:26I think I could eat that entire basket.
01:33This was just an amazing invention.
01:34Preparing them like this makes them a million times better,
01:37although we know they were good just as is.
01:40If you haven't had a pizza roll in a while,
01:41this is the way to bring them back.
01:44This next one is one of my favorite breakfasts
01:46that also doubled as an after-school snack,
01:48so I would have maybe two a day, the toaster strudel.
01:52While there are different flavors of the toaster strudel,
01:55the cream cheese danish, far superior.
01:59We're recreating these, which I did for a TikTok video
02:04a while back, and of course, it got rave reviews.
02:07These are really easy to recreate,
02:09so it does make for a fun snack or breakfast.
02:12Everything was about convenience,
02:14so if it didn't go in the microwave, it went in the toaster.
02:17So I'm gonna take some butter and thinly slice it.
02:21Okay, then I'm gonna put two pats of butter down.
02:23I'm gonna build six little stations here.
02:26Top that with brown sugar.
02:27So when this starts to bake,
02:29that's gonna form a little bit of like a crust on the outside.
02:34I've taken the cream cheese
02:35and put it in the freezer for a while,
02:36that way it's easier to slice.
02:38You're gonna take each cream cheese slice
02:40and place it horizontally onto your butter sections.
02:44Okay, now you're gonna take a sheet of puff pastry,
02:46roll it out slightly, and cut it into six sections.
02:49It's already kind of perforated for you into three sections,
02:53so basically you're just cutting it in half.
02:55Place it over the filling and then press down the sides
02:59so that the filling stays in.
03:00Take a fork and crimp the edges.
03:04Final step is to brush the top with egg wash.
03:07This is gonna give it a shine
03:08and also kind of help it stick.
03:11Can you anticipate all the snacks
03:12that we still have left to do?
03:14Of course, I took a poll to see
03:15what everyone's favorite childhood snacks were.
03:18And when I say childhood, we are referring to the 80s.
03:22And you would think I'd get like a million answers,
03:24but everybody had like the same answers.
03:27So I know these are the most popular.
03:28These aren't gonna be, you know,
03:30as perfect as the factory-made strudels.
03:33But when you take a bite into it, you will not care.
03:36To the oven we go, 400 degrees for about 15 or so minutes.
03:41Okay, hot and bubbly.
03:43You can see a lot of it has oozed out.
03:46Don't fret.
03:46You can kind of scoop some of that sugary goodness back in.
03:50And as it cools, it'll thicken and it'll stay.
03:53So you want to let them cool for about 10 to 15 minutes.
03:56For the frosting, it is just simply powdered sugar
03:59with a little milk.
04:00I like to eat it upside down so that I see that cream cheese.
04:03I can just taste it already before I taste it.
04:06Trust me, you are going to want to make this.
04:12Mmm.
04:13It's just so much better.
04:14It's richer.
04:15The puff pastry is super buttery.
04:17It's like you can taste every ingredient we put in here.
04:20There's nothing chemical tasting in this.
04:22I feel like if I bit into a toaster strudel now,
04:26I'd probably really be able to taste the chemicals.
04:29Better than a toaster strudel.
04:31Easiest way to make a cream cheese danish ever.
04:34And you will not be disappointed.
04:36The Ultimate 80s Loaded Potato Skins.
04:39This was a fave at some restaurants.
04:43I feel like you know the restaurants.
04:45Then the restaurant came out with a freezer version
04:48so you could have these at home.
04:49They were not the same.
04:51Cut your potatoes in half and scoop out the flesh.
04:55Do not waste that.
04:57You can make you a little batch of mashed potatoes.
05:00And your future self at dinner will thank you.
05:03So you're going to scoop out about, I don't know, 80% of the flesh.
05:06I like to leave a little potato in there around the edges.
05:09I feel like people don't make these,
05:12but if somebody has these at their party, I'm so excited.
05:16I feel like people think it's a lot of work.
05:18I'm going to show you that it's really quite easy.
05:21Another good one to remember for football season.
05:24Once they're all scooped out, take some melted butter,
05:28combine it with some olive oil so we get crisp and flavor.
05:32And then I'm going to brush these on the inside and outside
05:36with this mixture and sprinkle with salt.
05:38Then into the air fryer, just fit in as many as you can.
05:42I'm going 400 because I want them to be brown and crispy.
05:46Fried potato skins, crispy underneath.
05:49I mean, it feels fried and looks fried,
05:52but these already look so much better
05:53than what you get in a freezer section.
05:55So what I'm going to do is go ahead and top them
05:58with some cheese and bacon.
06:00I'm making these loaded and then just pop them back
06:02in the air fryer for just, you know, probably take less than a minute.
06:08And you know, to finish loading them up,
06:09a little sour cream and chives, but I mean green onions.
06:12And I'm going a little black pepper.
06:16Reinventing and making them even better.
06:19If this doesn't scream your childhood, I don't know what does.
06:22And each one is a giant perfect bite.
06:25Mmm.
06:27Why do we forget about these?
06:28Adding the butter and the olive oil makes these get really crispy.
06:33That good buttery flavor is in there.
06:35It's just nice and more salty.
06:36It's perfect.
06:37What shall we make next?
06:39Oh, I know.
06:40How about my favorite food in the entire world?
06:42As soon as I said that, I hope you said,
06:44oh, she must be making chips and dip.
06:46One of the most popular answers when I said,
06:50what is your favorite snack from your childhood?
06:52Onion dip and chips.
06:54Now we always bought the one pre-made in the refrigerator section,
06:57but you don't have to buy it refrigerated.
07:00You can make your own with some sour cream
07:03and basically a few pantry staples.
07:05In our town, it was called party dip.
07:07If you know, you know.
07:08And that was before fat grams counted.
07:10Everything's a pantry staple.
07:11The only fresh element, some fresh chives,
07:14and you're going to cut them super small
07:16just to add that kind of bright, fresh oniony flavor.
07:20Okay, then we're adding onion powder.
07:23This to me is what makes it.
07:25It's got to be onion powder.
07:25Also a little garlic powder and salt and pepper.
07:28See, you didn't even know it was that easy, did you?
07:30Now this is going to get better as the flavors come together
07:33and kind of marry in there.
07:37My favorite food ever, right here.
07:39I mean, that is a thing of beauty.
07:42Make sure it's not poisonous.
07:48My drug of choice.
07:50People can get as fancy as they want with their appetizers or snacks.
07:53This will hit every single time.
07:56Even today, I might pop a little spoonful of caviar right on top and make it real fancy.
08:00How about a little something sweet to balance out the salty?
08:03This snack I vow to bring back for my kids this school year.
08:07The ultimate after-school snack or breakfast cinnamon sugar toast.
08:11Hello.
08:12Yes.
08:13Did anyone have this for your cinnamon sugar?
08:15I feel a little neglected because I did not have this.
08:19But this is my boss's sugar and cinnamon from when he was a kid.
08:23Now this is not the same cinnamon sugar since he was a kid, but the same container.
08:27And his mom just keeps refilling it.
08:30How sweet is that?
08:31This is how my mom used to make it.
08:33It's all the same, but I feel like some people made it differently.
08:36Tell you what somebody did was toast the bread and then spread butter and sugar cinnamon on it.
08:41Absolutely not.
08:42That is not the way.
08:43Now my mom used to slice the butter, obviously, and would just put the pats of butter on here
08:49and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar.
08:51And then the butter would never really spread to the edges of the bread.
08:54I will not deprive my kids like that.
08:56I'm going to make sure every inch of bread has butter on it.
09:00Hey, Natalie.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Did you have cinnamon toast as a kid or is that before your time?
09:05No, every day.
09:07Every day.
09:08See?
09:09For breakfast.
09:09See, guys?
09:11I'm not old enough to be her mother.
09:14I don't think my mom even bought cinnamon sugar.
09:16Also, she wouldn't mix it first.
09:17It would be the sugar and then cinnamon, so the cinnamon would also be in the lines.
09:20Maybe I should make a piece like she would.
09:22Just sections of butter.
09:24She's probably going to be watching this and say,
09:26you are such a liar.
09:26I did not do it like that.
09:28That's what I remember.
09:29Now, if I was doing this today, I would probably do just like a really high oven.
09:33That way it toasts evenly and all around, but not our cinnamon toast.
09:37It was mostly just toasted on the top.
09:39Because it just went straight under the broiler.
09:41Fortunately, our ovens have a low broil setting now.
09:44She also used to leave it on high and do it like that.
09:49Well, can you see the difference in my version versus my mom's version?
09:53No shade, mom.
09:55She might have had something going, actually.
09:57Because you get like bits of crunchy around the butter.
09:59She did it on purpose.
10:02Nostalgia on a plate right here.
10:09Simplicity at its absolute finest.
10:12I know you don't want to hear the knife scratch, but you need to see just what the cinnamon sugar
10:17does.
10:19It just caramelizes and gets crunchy.
10:22It's like a little candy.
10:24But the bottom, because we broiled it, is nice and soft.
10:28So the butter just kind of sinks into that good old healthy white bread.
10:33Cinnamon toast might be the number one answer of nostalgic snacks.
10:37Another sweet treat and my favorite popsicle from my childhood, the jello pudding pop.
10:43You know the one I'm talking about.
10:45Smooth on the outside and then it had this like really thin layer of ice.
10:50You know, when you get it and you kind of like have to melt that little layer off to get
10:55to the pudding part.
10:56Why don't they make those anymore?
10:58Tell me why.
11:00Although I realized how easy they are to make.
11:02If they taste as good as I remember, then I will be making these for my kids.
11:06Or just for me.
11:07Two cups of milk.
11:09And then it's a half a cup of evaporated milk.
11:11Quarter cup of sugar.
11:12And then we whisk in our chocolate pudding.
11:15You just want to mix this until it's all dissolved and well combined.
11:19I'm going to pour it in here just so it's easy to transfer to the popsicle molds.
11:25This is the shape.
11:27Okay.
11:27You can find this popsicle mold and I don't think it's expensive.
11:31Popped in the sticks to the freezer.
11:34But lucky for you, I did one yesterday.
11:38Let's see how we did.
11:40Probably have to dip this in hot water.
11:42But I don't want to lose the little crystal ice layer on top if there is one.
11:50Look, it kind of has the ice.
11:51You see that really thin little shard of ice on that?
12:01Oh my gosh.
12:02It's just like a fudge pop.
12:04If you love fudge pops, you can make your own at home this easy.
12:07That jello pudding pop has been reincarnated.
12:12It's really making me wish I would have swirled in some vanilla.
12:16I will be doing that next time.
12:18I'll be bringing these home.
12:20My son is going to love them.
12:23Any ideas as to what we're making now?
12:25Bagel bites, baby.
12:27Now this was for sure.
12:29My brothers could inhale these things.
12:31Bagel, sauce, cheese.
12:34You know the drill.
12:35But I think people forget they make little mini bagels.
12:38Now if you got the ones from the freezer section, this is what your cheese would look like.
12:42See?
12:43You can put your own cheese on there.
12:45When you make your own, you can do whatever you want.
12:47And then little mini pepperonis.
12:49The little bits of pepperoni is what used to be on them.
12:52Now they have these little mini pepperonis, which are perfect.
12:55And then we just bake them.
12:57425 degrees for just about 10 minutes.
12:59Ooey, gooey, bubbly, and toasty and crispy.
13:04Like everything else so far, kind of looks better than the original.
13:08When it comes time to eat them, I'm giving a little ode to my brother here.
13:11This was his combo for everything pizza.
13:15Ranch and hot sauce.
13:16And not just any hot sauce.
13:18This is the one.
13:19A little crispy on the bottom.
13:21How I like my pizza crust.
13:24To be young again when calories didn't matter.
13:28When I was making this, I sort of thought,
13:30what's the big deal?
13:31It's going to taste exactly like what came in the freezer section.
13:35It does, but it's better.
13:37Everything so far has just been a little bit better.
13:40Bagel Bites is a 10 out of 10 snack.
13:43Another top answer of popular childhood snacks, nachos.
13:48I'm going to do my mom's nachos, which three or four ingredients.
13:53She would break this out.
13:55Actually still breaks this out on game days.
13:57Chips, chili from a can, which I'm not mad at, okay?
14:01And you shouldn't be either.
14:03I love nachos so much.
14:05Sometimes they're over the top nachos, fully loaded.
14:08And sometimes they're like this.
14:11Almost a ballpark nacho, but a little better.
14:13My mom would use this as the cheese sauce, okay?
14:18It's soup, cheddar cheese soup.
14:20I tried using this a little while back and it just didn't feel the same.
14:25I feel like as time's gone on, they come out with, you know,
14:28some more gourmet options.
14:29So now I choose that.
14:30This is my upgrade.
14:31I wouldn't feel right making my own cheese sauce, okay?
14:34Something about this kind of stuff just hits.
14:37Grown up me would probably throw on some shredded cheese too,
14:41but that would be so 2000s.
14:43I wouldn't want to disappoint my kids.
14:45They'll be like, Mom, is this the way people ate in the 1900s?
14:49Yes.
14:50Just takes about eight to 10 minutes.
14:53You want to go high oven.
14:54And while it's hot, go on with your jalapenos.
14:57Ta-da!
14:59Mom's nachos.
15:00The best one is kind of after it sits for a while and gets a little bit soggy.
15:06The jalapenos make it.
15:07It's the 80s, baby.
15:09I thought I would bring it back in case you forgot.
15:11Tray of Perfect Bites.
15:14It's 1985 and you're at the mall.
15:17What are you getting?
15:18An orange Julius.
15:19That's what you're getting and that's what we're making.
15:21This is the snack slash treat you would get when you were out and about.
15:25And we have the recipe to make it.
15:26A little cream and milk.
15:28Also, you might not have known that this could be in it, but a banana.
15:32This helps it really get creamy and adds more sweetness.
15:36Now we start to get into the fun ingredients.
15:39Coffee creamer.
15:40It's just powdered milk with a little bit of like sweetener in there.
15:43In goes an egg.
15:44That's what it's going to give us.
15:45Extra frothiness.
15:47And now finally we add the orange to the orange Julius.
15:49It's just orange juice frozen concentrate.
15:52They used to have the little cans.
15:54They don't make those or I can't find those anymore.
15:56So you're going to use half of a big can.
15:58Then a splash of vanilla.
15:59A little bit of ice.
16:00Not too much.
16:01Recipe actually says six cubes.
16:03And here goes.
16:12I forgot something.
16:14The sugar.
16:15I just tasted it.
16:16I was like wait.
16:16It needs to be a little sweeter.
16:18It's because I forgot the sugar.
16:19And it's not a little bit.
16:22I feel like y'all can taste it.
16:24Drop me off at the mall mom.
16:27I could gulp this down so fast.
16:29This is creamy, dreamy, perfection.
16:32My banana might have been slightly on the larger side.
16:35I kind of taste that almost as much as the orange.
16:39But I also love that.
16:41I don't think the orange Julius stores are around anymore.
16:45But somebody should bring those back.
16:46You'd be a millionaire.
16:48And I got one more snack plate for you.
16:51Peanut butter was a daily occurrence at our house.
16:53100% of the time.
16:55So I thought I would just do a little tribute to peanut butter
16:57everything for the final snack.
16:58Of course, my favorite.
17:01The peanut butter on a saltine cracker.
17:04Again, we're going back to the ingredient household.
17:06I have brought this back and thrown it in my kids lunch.
17:10And I think they liked it.
17:12The peanut butter saltine.
17:13That's my favorite.
17:14My next favorite.
17:15Peanut butter and celery.
17:17This because we're healthy.
17:19We were not an ants on a log household.
17:22Ants on a log is celery and peanut butter.
17:24And then you put raisins on it.
17:26Thankfully, my mom didn't make us,
17:27didn't torture us like that.
17:29Now I would probably like it.
17:30And of course, you know about peanut butter and banana.
17:33My son does have this on a weekly basis.
17:37I know you've had apples and peanut butter.
17:38But this, I feel like this was my mom's creation that nobody else did.
17:44But let me know if your mom did this.
17:46First of all, it has to be a red delicious apple, which in case you haven't tried to find these,
17:52they're not very popular.
17:54We didn't have apple cores.
17:56So she would take a knife and run it around the core and just kind of scoop it out.
18:01I feel like I would like to confess right now that I don't even own an apple core.
18:06I usually just cut the sides off my apple and just cut around the core.
18:10But for this snack, you got to have the whole apple hollowed out.
18:13And then you just fill it with peanut butter.
18:15So then you don't have to like peanut butter every slice or dip the slices in.
18:19You now have a peanut butter filled donut, donut, not just try to trick yourself.
18:26A peanut butter filled apple.
18:27Now this is how we had our apples and peanut butter.
18:31I feel like you just like, you'd have to get your apple in before you'd really get
18:37to the peanut butter.
18:38I don't know how to eat this anymore.
18:41Mmm.
18:43It's a whole different experience.
18:45I know you're like, Nicole, you could have given us, you know, a more intense recipe.
18:50I've given you nine and I might have saved number 10 the best for last.
18:55This treat along with the other nine have taken me on the best trip down memory lane.
18:59And I hope you felt the same way.
19:05Tubular.
19:05Totally tubular.
