00:00It's all changed at La Vuelta 26 after Tadej Pogacar crashed out in yesterday's eighth stage.
00:07The Slovenian leaves behind a pretty open fight for the red jersey,
00:11while UAE will have to change their approach in the absence of the world champion.
00:16He's in the hospital, in observation.
00:19I think we'll be forward for surgery after, so...
00:22No, he's of course positive and staying strong.
00:27I mean, from now on, of course, it's going to be a totally different race for everybody, not just for
00:31us.
00:32We are out of GC, so we're going to go for stages and that's all we can do and that's
00:38what we're going to try to do.
00:40Several riders now find themselves in a position to win La Vuelta
00:43and today's brutal outing will test their credentials.
00:47Henrik Maas leads by a minute, but there's still a very long way to go.
00:51It felt really unreal to have Tadej crash out of the race
00:56and, yeah, I wish him all the best for his recovery.
01:01That's cycling, unfortunately, also.
01:03For sure it opens a lot of opportunities now also for stage wins, I think.
01:09We will see how...
01:10Yeah, I can imagine that now many teams all of a sudden see big opportunities now.
01:16The race is definitely more open now than it was.
01:19Unfortunately, you never want to see a rider like Pogacar go out, especially when he's leading the race.
01:25But, no, I think it'll be a really exciting battle.
01:29And, no, for myself, I'm just, yeah, trying to stay calm and, yeah, see how I feel each day.
01:35And, you know, there's other riders that so far have shown they're really strong, but, no, I'm still hanging in
01:41there.
01:43This is the biggest mountain stage of this edition in terms of climbing, at least, more than 5,000 metres.
01:49It could be a good day for the breakaway because the GC riders will be marking each other closely
01:54and it's not going to be easy to control the race.
01:59Well, this is the stage with the most elevation gain on paper, so I think we can say it's the
02:04Queen stage.
02:05It's a beautiful stage and it really suits me with a long climb at the finish.
02:10I really like the look of it.
02:13We'll see if another team will be able to control the peloton like UAE has been doing in recent days.
02:21Well, stage nine features six climbs across 187 kilometres in the province of Alicante,
02:27an eye-watering 5,166 metres of elevation gain with the summit finish on the Alto de Aitana.
02:33It's 22 kilometres at 5.8%, with passages at up to 13%.
02:38A big day ahead.
02:43And so, on to the final stage of what's been a draining first week, both physically and mentally.
02:48But some riders still had a bit of strength in the legs, notably Alexei Lutsenko,
02:53the Kazakhstani trying several times before getting away in a group of six.
02:57He was joined by one of Pogaccia's team-mates, Pavel Sivakov, but there was set to be more bad news
03:03for UAE.
03:07Sadly, there's been another rider who has abandoned La Vuelta.
03:11Pablo Torres, the 20-year-old Spanish rider of UAE Team Emirates XRG, has stepped off the bike.
03:18Andreas Krohn, Alistair McKellar, Fabian Weiss and Alessandro Romere also in this front group,
03:24but they were struggling to break free of the pelotons' grip, with lots of riders trying to bridge across.
03:29On the first of the six climbs, their lead was under a minute.
03:34Andreas Krohn on the front in that yellow jersey, comes across the top of the Puerto de Tabena.
03:39He takes the five points.
03:43Some strong climbers hot on their heels, including Finn Fischer-Black, Valentin Parépantre
03:48and Santiago Buetrago, who was targeting the polka dot jersey.
03:52The front group swelling to around 15, before heading onto the Cat 1 climb of El Miserat,
03:57with punishing maximum gradients of 23%.
04:00And things still hadn't settled, because there were another dozen riders chasing behind.
04:06Movistar just keeping an eye on things in the peloton, but none of the riders up the road posed a
04:11threat on GC.
04:12At the top of the second climb, Buetrago took a maximum haul.
04:17This man, Santiago Buetrago, knows it well.
04:20He's going to take the ten points at the top of the climb, the Puerto de El Miserat.
04:25The Colombian becoming the virtual king of the mountains ahead of Andreas Lechnesund.
04:30A few more riders joining the breakaway, as Buetrago continued to collect points on the next climb.
04:36The gap back to the peloton creeping up to almost five minutes,
04:40so a few people were no doubt starting to think about a potential stage victory.
04:44There were now 24 at the front, with 16 of the 23 teams represented.
04:49Buetrago hoovering up more points on the fourth of the six climbs,
04:52but would he have enough left in the tank to go for the stage honours?
05:01Santiago Buetrago now wants to try and battle for the five points at the top of this climb.
05:05And now the injection of pace from the Colombian, who wants to try and take these points.
05:09Pinarello Q36.5 are going to challenge, but it's going to be Buetrago.
05:14He takes the five points at the top of the Puerto de Turons.
05:18Still no movement in the peloton, but in the breakaway, Ramele attacked,
05:22going clear on the descent of the Puerto de Turons.
05:25The Italian pulling 50 seconds clear before the intermediate sprint and the penultimate climb.
05:31But he began to lose ground on the Puerto de Benifalim, with two men chasing him down.
05:36Sivakov, who was clearly on a mission for UAE, and the Spanish road race champion Marcel Camprubi.
05:41A change in the peloton, meanwhile, with Decathlon CMA CGM taking over from Movistar
05:47and setting the tempo for Felix Gall.
05:50Sivakov and Camprubi catching Ramele, with the peloton now five and a half minutes back,
05:55and the final climb looming into view.
05:57It had looked like a breakaway day, but suddenly Decathlon were piling on the pressure.
06:02Sivakov and Camprubi dropping Ramele, but their lead was disappearing fast,
06:07with the peloton clawing back two and a half minutes in the space of just ten kilometres.
06:13Pavel Sivakov, who's moving forward in search of his first Grand Tour stage victory.
06:19And it was soon time for the GC games to begin.
06:23It's a big acceleration from Felix Gall. Who can follow? Henrik Maas trying to stay on the wheel.
06:31Gall thinning out the red jersey group, with Sepp Kuss losing contact, but no other big names were dropped.
06:38Sivakov was soon going to have a bit of company up at the front.
06:42Henrik Maas and Jano Badaar looking to up the tempo, with Oskar Onli also making a move in the white
06:48jersey.
06:50Maas is coming across to Oskar Onli here.
06:53It leaves Primoz Roglic to do the chasing, with Felix Gall on the wheel of the Slovenian.

07:05His hopes of taking a Grand Tour stage victory are going to be short lived.
07:09It's all back together at the front of the race.

07:14A couple of dropped riders like Rodriguez and Scalmosa catching up to the big guns and trying to go clear.
07:20But this wouldn't be their day, because the red jersey was looking in the mood.
07:24Now Henrik Maas makes a move.

07:29Looking to try and take time out of his general classification rivals.
07:32He attacks, he settles into his rhythm. Another acceleration.
07:37Maas out to make a statement, and only Oskar Onli could hold the Spaniards' wheel.
07:42Roglic trying to fight his way back, with everybody else losing ground.
07:46At the Flam Rouge, the four-time winner was agonisingly close.
07:50But it was the red jersey and the white jersey who would duke it out at the finish line.
07:56Henrik Maas in the red jersey is going to come to the top of this climb with Oskar Onli at
08:00the top of the Alto de Aitana.
08:01They're going to battle it out between them both for the stage victory.
08:05Roglic isn't going to make it there.
08:07Now it's Maas who starts to accelerate.
08:09Onli looking for his first grand tall stage victory.
08:12They round the left-hand corner with 175 metres to go.

08:17What has he got left to try and come round Maas?
08:19Maas wants to try and win again at La Vuelta.
08:22Eight years ago, he last won.
08:24He's going to come to the top of the Alto de Aitana.
08:27Henrik Maas is a grand tall stage winner once more.
08:31A second Vuelta stage.
08:33And what a way to do it.
08:36The long wait is finally over for Henrik Maas.
08:40Celebrating his first stage win at La Vuelta since 2018.
08:43And his first anywhere since 2022.
08:46It's also a first World Tour victory this season for Movistar.
08:50The 31-year-old is looking on fine form.
08:52And after four podium finishes.
08:54Second, second, second and third.
08:56Could this finally be his year?
08:59Well now I understand Tadej.
09:01The jersey gives you wings.
09:04Today you could really see how well the team performed.
09:08I think we were a 10 out of 10 in everything.
09:11I felt very good in the final.
09:15I also want to say a big thank you to the Sporting Directors for all of their help.
09:19For always telling me how the others were looking so I was able to win the stage.
09:26Well three days after losing a 2-up sprint against Pogacar,
09:29Maas wins a 2-up sprint against Onli taking just his seventh career victory.
09:34Roglic and Gao both finished within 18 seconds.
09:38Maas is the first Spaniard to win in the red jersey since Alberto Contador in 2014.
09:43He increases his lead to a minute 18 over Roglic and 1.39 over Gao.
09:48Onli climbs to fourth.
09:51No change in green with Watt van Aert still 57 points clear.
09:55And a brilliant day out for Buetrago who snatched the polka dot jersey.
09:59Although the stage winner Maas is only five points back.
10:04Onli has tightened his grip on the white jersey.
10:07Nearly six minutes clear now of Jakob Omrozel.
10:11It's time for a well-earned rest day.
