00:00Nairobi is running out of water, so the city is drilling deeper underground.
00:03The canyon capital needs about 935 million liters of water every day,
00:08but right now it's shot by nearly 300 million liters.
00:11So thousands of boreholes are pumping groundwater to fill the gap.
00:14But there's a problem. Nairobi is already drilling to greater depths to reach it.
00:18And some of that groundwater isn't even safe to drink without treatment.
00:22Researchers have found high levels of salt, fluoride and pollution from sewage and agriculture.
00:27Experts want that simply drilling more boreholes won't solve Nairobi's water crisis.
00:31Instead, the city also needs to recycle wastewater, collect more rainwater
00:36and protect areas where groundwater is naturally replenished.
00:39Nairobi actually gets plenty of rain.
00:41The challenge is saving more of that water instead of letting it wash away.
